I part of the course of GREEK LITERATURE (Profs. Giuseppetti - Cozzoli): The art of narration in Horodotus and Thucydides
The course of Greek literature consists of two parts
First part: The course aims to present an historical outline of the Greek literature up to the Roman age through a review of the most significant genres and authors. The reading of selected passages of Herodotus and Thucydides will be the starting point to reflect on the art of narration which developed in the Athenian culture at the end of the V century. Historiography offers a special point of view for observing how such authors as Herodotus and Thucydides are related to their social and political contest and how the interpreted the past and tradition. In particular, students will read passages from the books I, II and IV of Herodotus, which allow to consider the relationship between the author and some intellectual trends of his time and, on the other side, between the historian and Homer, the poems of the epic cycle and the archaic poetry in general. As far as Thucydides is concerned, students will read passages from the archaiologia in the first book, in order to analyse the problems of the truthfulness of Homer and of the origins of the Athenian empire.
( reference books)
Bibliography of the first part of the course: Students are required to acquire the general outiline of Greek literature through the use of an handbook. The passages of Herodotus and Thucydides will be discussed on texts provided by the teacher during the course and avalible on his online page (http://studiumanistici.uniroma3.it/mgiuseppetti/bacheca/).

BORDI GIULIA
( syllabus)
The course will be divided into two modules. The first module "Outlines of medieval art history from the 4th to the 11th century" aims to provide the students with a basic knowledge of Medieval art, with important examples of art works and monumental contexts between late Antiquity and the Year 1000 (IV-XI century). The second module will offer a wider framework of Medieval Art, illustrating works of art and monumental contexts from the rebirth of the cities to the end of the Middle Ages (XI-XIV century). These courses are designed to introduce the student to a critical reflection on Medieval Art (4th-14th century), providing methodological tools for understanding of the works and their study within historical and artistic processes. From this perspective, therefore, we will be focusing in depth on some major topics such as the relationship with classical antiquity; the role of patronage; function and use of space in the apse; models and their variants; the medieval workshop and its dynamics. There will be also some visits of Medieval churches in Rome which are constitutive part of the exams program.

PAINTING AND SCULPTURE IN ITALY (1400-1700) (12 CFU) The knowledge of art and artistic movements in Italy from early Renaissance to Neoclassicism is the aim of the course. This goal can be achieved analyzing the style of the works of art and their history, patronage, meaning in the society in which they were born. Therefore a visive knowledge of paintings and sculptures is strictly requested. The course will begin with some general lectures about artistic movements and different approaches to history of art. Students are kindly requested to have taken History of Medieval Art exam before attending the course. Studying the manual is just the first step of preparing for the exam. The knowledge of the complete work of the most important artists is also requested and therefore students can be helpedto get in touch with the whole ouvre of artists by the website (I suggest www.wga.hu). Maestri del Colore or Classici dell’arte Rizzoli can be useful as well. During the course some subjects will be developed and it’s very important to learn them through the slides which can be found at www.bit.ly/dsu-terzaghi at the end of the course. In any case the most important way of learning visual art is getting in real touch with works of art by visiting them. Therefore there’s a list of monuments in Rome to be visited before the exam, which could be found in the slides. Students attending the course can take a written exam at mid term and at the end of the term. These two written exams will be part of the final one. Bibliography for attending and non attending students is the same. The least absolutely need to get the course’s slides which can be found here www.bit.ly/dsu-terzaghi at the end of the course.

History of Christianity: from Jesus to the emergence of Islam. The course aims to introduce the students to the history of Christianisms in Ancient and Early Medieval Times. The use of the plural form "Christianisms" immediately intends to clarify that it doesn't deal with the history of the Roman Catholic Church, but with the variegated developments of Christianity within the first eight centuries. Specific purpose of the course is to start the student to a critical reading of the sources, facing methodological matters and giving ample space to the scholarly debate. During the course we will visit significant Christian sites.

A collection of diverse primary sources organized around several major themes will be provided during the class.
Students who are not able to attend lectures have to read the following books:

DESCRIPTION OF THE CLASS
As Glenn Bowersock wrote (G. Bowersock, Storms over Byzantium, “New York Review of Books”, 21 November 2013), a real “explosive growth” has been pertaining to Byzantine studies during the last decades all over the world. Indeed, they “grew dramatically from academic obscurity into an industry”. The first class of Byzantine Civilisation for BA degree is addressed to students of Classic Literatures, History and History of Art. Its main aim is to answer to these two simple questions: What actually was Byzantium? Why is its comprehension so important nowadays? In the class, students will be provided with specific rudiments of the Byzantine empire geography, as well as of the most relevant historical events. Concurrently, they will be introduced to the most important issues the international scholarship is dealing with, such as (1) the role played by Byzantium in the transmission of ancient literature, art and thought to our modern western civilisation; (2) the relationships Byzantium had with other civilisations and cultures over a millennium, both inside and outside its borders.

ROSSI MARCO
( syllabus)
The course classes and visits, during which, space will be given for practical exercise, take highly into consideration the specialized nature of the laboratory and the heterogeneity of its participants.
The archaeo-lab course focuses on the study and on the handling of the archaeological materials.
Within the frame of a long chronological timespan and of a large geographical horizon, several types of materials, together with their production processes, will be examined (from the pre-historic phase to the more recent and modern ones). A further analysis on the decoration of selected productions (in ceramic, metal or vitreous materials) will be then carried out.
The issues related to the cataloguing and classification of the archaeological findings and the compilation of the data records entry will be preliminary discussed.
Nevertheless, aspects related to the acquisition of scientific information (for the purpose of study or restoration of the materials) will be explored and a few notions about technical drawing and data digitization will be provided. The practical side of the lessons will be exploited throughout lectures, simulations, exercises and external visits.
During the course, the students will be trained in the field of the pottery studies, of the architectonic decoration (in terracotta or marble). Furthermore, they will be also introduced, thanks to the use of optical instrumentation and digital tools, to the study of the different types of materials (clay, vitreous, metal and stone).
The idoneità is achieved having regular attendance (which is highly recommended) and an active participation in the practical exercises which are meant to help the students with learning the handling / study / cataloguing of the materials (necessary for the purposes of assessing the students’ positive grade and obtaining the necessary credits).
