Training objectives of the course GIVE THE STUDENTS INFORMATION ABOUT CONTENTS, METHODS AND EPISTEMOLOGICAL PROCESSES CONCERNING THE INTERACTIONS BETWEEN ARCHITECTURE AND STRUCTURAL MECHANICS.
Prerequisites CRITICAL ATTITUDE TOWARDS LEARNING
Course programme EVEN THOUGH IT IS COMMONLY RECOGNIZED THAT THE TECHNICAL THOUGHT IS A CRUCIAL PART OF THE ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN PROCESS, SOMETIMES ONE IS NOT AWARE THAT A FAIR USE OF THE TECHNIQUES CAN BE ACHIEVED ONLY WHEN THEIR GOVERNING SCIENTIFIC PARADIGMS ARE KNOWN. THE AIM OF THESE LECTURES IS TO EXPLORE THE INTERSECTIONS AND CONTRIBUTION THAT THE BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF THE STRUCTURAL BEHAVIOUR CAN GIVE TO THE ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN, BY MEANS OF A FIRST APPROACH, ESSENTIALLY QUALITATIVE, TO THE MATTER.

Training objectives of the course THE STUDIO PROVIDES A FIRST APPROACH TO THE DESIGN OF BUILDINGS, IN ORDER TO UNDERSTAND THE COMPLEX METHODOLOGICAL, TECHNICAL, CULTURAL AND SOCIAL INTERACTIONS WITHIN A SIMPLE ARCHITECTURAL EXERCISE
Course programme CONTENT PROCEEDING BY STAGES, THE STUDENT WILL BE GUIDED TO THE DESIGN OF A SMALL BUILDING. THE PROJECT THEME IS A DETACHED HOUSE . LECTURES SERIES WILL PROVIDE A SCOPE OF KNOWLEDGE AND PERSPECTIVE ON ARCHITECTURAL THINKING AS WELL AS CRAFTS. LEARNING OUTCOMES ARCHITECTURE DEALS WITH PEOPLE’S LIVING ENVIRONMENTS, PLACES OF INTERACTION, SPACES, CONSTRUCTION. THE DESIGN OF A BUILDING IS THE RESULT OF A LONG PROCESS OF INVESTIGATION. THIS IS TRUE FOR ANY KIND OF BUILDING TYPES REGARDLESS OF THE SIZE AND OF THE USE OF IT. THE CHOICE OF THE DETACHED HOUSE DESIGN WAS MADE FOR STUDENTS APPROACHING THIS PROCESS FOR THE FIRST TIME.
ASSESSMENT METHODS THE DESIGN LAB CONSISTS OF: - LECTURES - TABLE CRITICS - CLASSROOM EXERCISES - DURING THE FINAL EXAMINATION THE STUDENTS WILL BE REQUESTED TO DEMONSTRATE THEIR PROJECT, BOTH VISUALLY AND VERBALLY, AND TO DEFEND THEIR PROJECT AND IDEAS

DISEGNO DELL'ARCHITETTURA
(objectives)
To be able to draw, in a correct and understandable form, in architecture it is prerequisite to dialogue with the outside world. The knowledge of grammatical and lexical basis of the architectural drawing allows the use of the availability of graphic language and architecture to express not only the objective reality and material / dimensional architecture itself but also to test and expose the formal thoughts, the geometric and proportional logic, the memories of historical language, the symbolic values, the underlying meaning that substantiate the ways of being of architectural objects. Objectives: development of theoretical knowledge and practical skills critical to proper use of techniques and methods of representation, meaning and value of graphic conventions needed for the transmission of the idea of architecture and his design for the project.

( syllabus)
DRAWING PROPOSES ITSELF AS A QUEST FOR AN INDIVIDUAL AESTHETICS, ONE WHICH IS SUBJECTIVE, WHICH IS ONE’S OWN AND IN SOME SENSE UNIQUE; AND HENCE A CONQUEST OF ONE’S OWN AUTONOMY, OF ONE’S OWN FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION. GRAPHIC OPERATIONS HAVE, AS A MATTER OF FACT, THE QUALITY OF INDISSOLUBLY MARRYING EXECUTION TECHNIQUES, UNDERSTOOD AS MANUAL OPERABILITY, AND ABSTRACT THOUGHT. FROM THIS MARRIAGE FLOWS THE EXCEPTIONAL CONDITION OF DRAWING AS CONCERNING ALL OF THE ARTS, AND IN SOME WAY AS WELL, THE MULTIDISCIPLINARITY OF ITS TEACHINGS WHICH RUN THROUGH ALL OF THE PROFESSIONAL TRAINING OR UNIVERSITY DEGREES IN THE CREATIVE DISCIPLINES. DRAWING SHOULD BE UNDERSTOOD, IN KEEPING WITH ITS MOST ANCIENT ACADEMIC TRADITIONS, AS A PROJECT METALANGUAGE (SHARED AMONGST THE ARTS), NAMELY HOW TO KNOW THAT WHICH CONCERNS THE FIGURATIVE DIMENSION - AND HENCE COMMUNICATIVE (REPRESENTATIVE) OF ARCHITECTONIC CONSTRUCTION. LEARNING HOW TO DRAW CONTRIBUTES, IN THE DIDACTIC PROCESS, TO THE FORMATION OF A PRECISE FIGURATIVE CULTURE OF ARCHITECTURE AND IS INESCAPABLY SITUATED BETWEEN DESIGN AND HISTORY. THIS COURSE PROPOSES TO DEEPEN, TO EXPERIMENT WITH TECHNIQUES OF REPRESENTATION, AIMED AT THE KNOWLEDGE, READING, DIRECT SURVEYING, ANALYSIS, AND CONCEPTION OF ARCHITECTURE. ONE SHALL NOT BE ABLE TO DRAW FLAWLESSLY IN THE LITTLE TIME AT OUR DISPOSAL; THE PRACTICE OF DRAWING AND THE LEARNING OF THIS IS AN ABSORBING AND CONSTANT EFFORT WHICH ONE MUST DO ON ONE’S OWN AND WHICH SHOULD ACCOMPANY US THROUGHOUT OUR ENTIRE LIFE; THE COURSE SHALL HOWEVER SEEK TO LAY THE GROUNDWORK WHICH SHALL ALLOW YOU TO UNDERSTAND AND STRENGTHEN YOUR OWN EXPRESSIVE MODALITIES THROUGH DRAWING: AND TO APPLY THE VARIOUS TECHNIQUES, THANKS TO THE DIRECT AND PRACTICAL INDICATIONS GIVEN DURING THE SUPERVISED PRACTICE SESSIONS, BY MEANS OF THE STUDY, OBSERVATION AND THE REDRAWING OF THE EMBLEMATIC CASES OF BOTH CLASSICAL AS WELL ASCONTEMPORARY ARCHITECTURE AND ART. THROUGH THESE PRACTICE SESSIONS, THE DEFINITION OF YOUR OWN GRAPHIC EXPRESSIVITY SHALL BE FURTHERED, THUS HELPING YOU TO GRASP HOW CRUCIAL DRAWING IS IN ORDER TO EXPRESS YOUR OWN IDEAS AS WELL AS FOR THE PROJECT. STUDYING TEXTS DEDICATED TO THE MASTERS OF ARCHITECTURE, FROM PALLADIO TO ALDO ROSSI, FROM LEONARDO TO LE CORBUSIER, OUR ,RUNNING FROM SKETCHES TO THE MORE ASEPTIC COMPUTERIZED RENDERINGS, IS A KIND OF KNOWLEDGE, WHICH IS ABSOLUTELY INDISPENSABLE FOR THE ARCHITECT IN ORDER TO CARRY OUT THE PRECISE RENDERING OF HIS OR HER OWN IDEAS. THAT ARCHITECTURE IS LEARNT AND COMMUNICATED BY DRAWING ARCHITECTURES IS FOR ALL INTENTS AND PURPOSES OBVIOUS, BUT NOT AT THE SAME TIME THE CONSCIOUSNESS OF DRAWING AS THE EXPRESSION OF THE MIND AND SOUL. THE FIRST PART OF THE COURSE SHALL THEREFORE DEEPEN KNOWLEDGE OF FREE HAND DRAWING, A PROCEDURE WHICH ALLUDES TO THE PAST BUT WHICH HAS ALSO HAS ILLUSTRIOUS CONTEMPORARY ADMIRERS, AND A PARTICULAR SPACE SHALL BE DEDICATED TO DRAWING FROM REALITY, TO THE SKETCHES, TO PROSPECTIVE DRAWING AND ON-SIGHT RELIEF. IN THE SECOND PART WE SHALL EXPERIMENT WITH THE VARIOUS TECHNIQUES OF CONTEMPORARY REPRESENTATION AND NOT, AS A COMPLEX EXERCISE IN THE INTERPRETATION OF REALITY, WE SHALL PASS FROM INK TO PENCIL, FROM CHARCOAL CRAYON TO WATERCOLOURS, FROM SANGUINES TO PANTONES ON SUPPORTS WHICH DIFFER FROM TIME TO TIME. EVERY LESSON SHALL BE PRECEDED BY PRACTICE SESSIONS CONDUCTED IN THE CLASSROOM OR OUTSIDE IN THE PRESENCE OF A TEACHER WHO SHALL PROVIDE PRACTICAL CLARIFICATIONS ON THE EXECUTION. INTERMEDIATE VERIFICATIONS WILL TAKE PLACE AND ATTENDANCE IN THE LESSONS AND IN THE PRACTICE TASKS IS REQUIRED.

( syllabus)
The major aim of the course is to present students with a critical assessment of different theories of restoration, by considering that all theories are linked to a particular moment in history and, above all, that contemporary theory of restoration – including the charters for conservation, programmes and the principles guiding the preservation – has to be considered as a possible interpretation of the past and not as a definitive scientific achievement. Lectures are focused on the history of restoration from the late eighteenth century until the twentieth century in Italy and in Europe. Many examples from Rome are used to highlight the different ways of interpretation and actualization of the historical heritage. The students will work on the construction of a type of “observatory” of contemporary restoration, through analysis and critical assessment of ongoing work on architectural heritage in Rome.

CECCHINI SILVIA
( syllabus)
The course is divided into two parts: the first (A) is set to lectures and site inspections. It addresses the theme of the museum from an historical and critical perspective. It will cover from the firsts private collections to the declination, in the eighteenth-century, of museum as a public place; from the creation of museums in the Nineteenth-century European capitals, to some significant contemporary display experiences. The transformations of the exhibitions and museums culture will be analyzed by reading forms and contents as a result of the meeting between architecture and art history, conservation and critics. Specific seminars will be dedicated to the history of the relationship between private collections, museums and territorial context in Rome between the fifteenth and the nineteenth century, so as the Italian museum culture of the first half of the twentieth century. The second part (B) is the Laboratory of Museology: here students have the aim is to develop a design concept for the display of a section of the Museum of Rome - Palazzo Braschi. This part of the course will include laboratory meetings, conferences of art historians, museum officials, architects and restorers. The aim is to make available to the students aspects connected to the point of view of art history, architecture, art techniques and conservation, aspects that are to be taken into account in preparing the exhibition. Theme of the Laboratory of Museology for the academic year 2015-2016: design concept for the display of plaster casts of Pietro Tenerani at the Museum of Rome - Palazzo Braschi.

Objectives IN THIS CLASS, STUDENTS EXPERIMENT WITH THE NEW DESIGN TECHNIQUES LINKED TO DIFFUSION OF NEW INSTRUMENTS OF PARAMETRIC MODELLING, DIRECTLY LINKED TO ANALYSIS AND DIGITAL MANUFACTURING TOOLS. THE AIM IS TO EXPOSE THEM TO THE EVOLUTION OF PROFESSIONAL PROFILES BRINGED BY NEW INSTRUMENTS. THIS IS DONE THROUGH LECTURES, A SELECTION OF PROJECTS, BUT ALSO MEETINGS IN PERSON WITH COMPANIES AND PEOPLE INVOLVED IN THE NEW FIELDS, THROUGH DEDICATED SEMINARS. THE KEY IS THAT AT THE SAME TIME STUDENTS HAVE A DIRECT EXPERIENCE OF THE INSTRUMENTS BY USING THEM IN THE CLASS. THROUGH THEIR OWN WORK, THE LINKS WITH THEIR COLLEAGUES IN A SHARED WEB PLATFORM, AND THE LINK WITH OTHER PARALLEL CLASSES, ALLOWED BY THE COURSE. IN THIS WAY, THE COURSE AIMS AT HAVING THEM UNDERSTAND THROUGHOUT AND WITHIN THEIR OWN EXPERIENCE, THE NEW PRODUCTION METHODS OF CONTEMPORARY ENLARGED DESIGN TEAMS, WHERE PROJECTS ARE DEVELOPED PASSING SEAMLESSLY FROM DIGITAL MODELING OF CONSTRUCTIVE COMPONENTS AND OF THEIR ASSEMBLY SEQUENCE TO PRECISE CONTROL OVER DESIGN GEOMETRY, STRUCTURAL AND ENERGY ANALYSIS, UP TO DIGITAL MANUFACTURING OF THE FINAL OUTCOMES. Contents Parametric Design Techniques
The course is focused on innovative design processes. Students will be exposed to advanced methods as well as to design and production examples in order to set up the awareness of the new toolset that is available to designers and engineers in the fields of parametric modeling, analysis and digital fabrication. Student work will be deployed in software such as Revit, Rhino/Grasshopper, GenerativeComponents, Ecotect, SAP, CNC packages depending on the chosen topic. But in any case the focus will be on the production of data (cost, structural behaviour, construction, environmental analysis), in the context of constant exchange in multisciplinary design groups. Each student will have the chance to customize the course experience by linking the topic to external classes, to develop interdisciplinary and collaborative design topics. This will ultimately lead to the experience of the new professional profiles that are requested to architects by the new working environment of the contemporary digital culture. The class will be linked to the ongoing research project for the Solar Decathlon Europe 2012.

The process of individualization of society is likened to the ongoing process of fragmentation of the city, its division into shares. Yet if one looks at the urban reality, practices do not miss the opportunity of a different description of the urban reality. Forms of association and the community seem to return in an urban setting. Densification of existing neighbourhoods and regeneration mean that the relationship between place and the community to be a crucial focus of urban studies. The course aims to equip students with the foundations for a critical understanding of urban issues and to compare these with the role that the urban project may have.
