Title 2018-2019: Peter and Paul in Rome, between history and legend (I-III century)

Course description: from the end of the second century, the presence in Rome of the "trophies" of Peter and Paul is attested. Not much, however, do we know of the last phase of the lives of the two apostles, through historically reliable sources. On the other hand, in the second century begins the production of apocrypha (Acts of Peter, Acts of Paul) that have Peter and Paul as protagonists and the capital of the Empire as a place of many of the events narrated. The module proposes to deepen, according to various perspectives of investigation (philologico-critical, linguistic-literary, historico-doctrinal), these works, with special attention to the sections set in Rome.

Materials for the lessons (critical editions of Lipsius and Vouaux, Italian translations of Erbetta and Moraldi, scientific bibliography) will be provided by the teacher.

Le modificazioni del paesaggio, sia quello insediativo sia quello agrario, nel Medioevo, hanno una stretta relazione con le forme e le modalità adottate dalle comunità nell'organizzare la loro presenza nell'ambiente. Le trasformazioni dell'ambiente nel lungo periodo medievale (dal V al XV secolo), saranno esaminati in forma diacronica con particolare attenzione alla costruzione dell'ambiente e dell'habitat che per certi aspetti è ancora oggi la base dell'insediamento.

Christian and Medieval Iconography (I Semester - 6 CFU)

Sarcophagi in Late Antiquity

The course will give the students a method which is necessary to read the themes depicted in the plastic funerary production of Rome, Arles, Ravenna and Constantinople, observing similarities and differences, both stylistic and chronological. Lessons will retrace the itinerary of roman and mediterranean ateliers, which carved specially sarcophagi, in marble or local stone, with neutral, christian or symbolic scenes. Will be analyzed the main centers of production, such as Rome, Ostia, Arles, Ravenna, Milan and Constantinople.

After a first part on the evolution of the city in Roman Italy (urbanistic, architectural, right and so on aspects), topic of the course is the relationship among the roman city and the baths. General aspects on the baths will be considered and three sample-cases will be analyzed: Pompeii, Rome and Ostia.

The course aims to:
- the analysis and interpretation of epigraphical texts pertinent to holders of prefecture of pretoria between I and V century;
- the historical contextualization of the carrers;
- hypothesis on the way the inscriptions were carried out and preserved.

The knowledge of basic Latin and of roman history are required. Stdents are recommendend. to attend the course more than occasionally.

Codicology

The course aims to present the features of Greeks and Latin manuscripts, especially those of some relevance for the philological, historical and cultural studies. We will take into consideration external characteristics of manuscripts (such as techniques, means and tools used for arranging a book and the professional figures involved in the process of production) and the cultural background (that is places and times of origin) of manuscript books. A few lessons will be specifically dedicated to the issue of the description of late antique manuscripts which are preserved as fragments.
The course includes an examination of reproducted manuscripts (on paper and on electronic supports) and the examination of manuscripts and other materials in archives and libraries.

The final exam will include the knowledge of the material provided during lessons and the discussion of one subject which the student will decide to study in depth. In addition students are required to study the following texts:

In contemporary societies the arts affect the public discourse, becoming agency of meanings, laboratory for the civil society, space and place for shaping the public memory of controversial events, arena where gender identities, ethnicity and social classes are socially constructed.
The first part of the course will aim at studying artistic production and politics of cultural consumption. It will focus on the following topics: theories of the author's death, theories of reception, art as social practice, the institutional definition of artistic value, cases of " non-recognition " and plagiarism, politics of genius, canonization and practices of social exclusion, theories of cultural capital, relationship between art and advertising, the role of social media in the production of artistic reputations and in relation to the "arts worlds".
The second part will concern art institutions. It will address the following topics: art and the public sphere, monuments in the urban space, art as memory technology, cultural consumption of the past and the role of the cinema in shaping the public memory of very contested pasts, sociology of museums and politics of museum exhibition, representation of ethnic identities in museums, museums as technology of gender, multimedia art.
The third part will address the relationship between theatre and civil society, with a special focus on the case of theatre in prisons.

The sophistic movement was a cultural and intellectual revolution in fifth-century Athens and Greece. They defied traditional paideia, but unfortunately only a fraction of their texts has been transmitted by ancient sources. A selection of key texts will be the basis for an assessment of crucial aspects of the sophistic revolution (myth, ethics, politics, intellectual paideia). The following texts will be discussed and commented upon in class (the references are to the sixth edition of pre-Socratic philosophers by Diels and Kranz): Protagoras, 80 B1-4, C 1; Gorgias, 82 B 11 (encomium of Helen) and 11a (Palamedes’ apology); Prodicus of Ceos, 84 B 1-2 (Heracles at the crossroads); Thrasymachus, 85 B 1; Antiphon, 87 B 44, 44a, 49, 53, 54, 58-61; Critias, 88 B 1, 2, 4, 5, 25 (from the Sisyphus).

"Cruel Venus": Seneca's Phaedra. In the course a full setting of the latin tragedy will be offered, together with a close reading in latin, an italian interpretation and a commentary of Seneca's play, paying particular attention to aspects of dramaturgy and poetic shape (models, esp. Euripides' Hippolytus, metrics, style).

TITLE OF THE MODULE: On Augustine's fortune in the Middle Ages: the Expositio in Regulam beati Augustini attributed to Ugo di San Vittore (c. 1096-1141)

DESCRIPTION OF THE COURSE: The module, of a monographic nature, intends first to retrace, broadly, the origins and types of the monastic phenomenon - notoriously one of the most characteristic expressions of the religious and cultural history of the Middle Ages - and then to analyze, with particular attention to the vocabulary and use of the sources, the Expositio in Regulam beati Augustini attributed to Hugh of St. Victor, a text so far little studied, nor edited critically, but not a secondary witness of Augustine's enduring influence on the religious life of the so-called XII century rebirth. - As part of the module will also be activated exercises designed to guide the knowledge and use of the main electronic resources for the study and research on the Latin authors of the Middle Ages.

An introduction to Data Mining and Data Journalism by means of the Python programming language.

The course is divided into three sections.
1) History of the archaeological restoration culture, particularly focused on Rome (Roman Forum, Palatine Hill, Imperial Fora). The lectures are dedicated to the history of change and re-use that have led to the loss of the original architectural identity until its intentional “re-creation”, from the second half of the Eighteenth Century. This new culture and its different outcomes during the last two centuries will be analyzed: excavations, restorations, reconstructions, anastylosis and enhancement programs.

The course will offer a presentation about the literary context of the "De reditu", an incomplete work in elegiac couplets, in which Rutilius Namatianus wrote the report of his journey from Rome to Gaul Narbonensis, land of origin and place of return and escape from barbarian raids. With particular attention to the aspects of form, style and metric we will proceed with the integral reading, interpretation and commentary of the poem, destined to assume, perhaps involuntarily, a real epoch-making dimension.

Synesius of Cyrene (4th-5th century CE) was both a brilliant student of neoplatonic philosophy at the pagan school of Alexandria and the christian bishop of Ptolemais.
In 405 he sent to his old teacher Hypatia a letter along with two then unpublished works: the first one was On Dio and the other was a brief treatise about dreams. In the latter work, as one can read at the end of the letter, Synesius put forward “doctrines entirely new to Hellenic philosophy”.
The class of Byzantine Civilisation for MA degree is dedicated to the analysis of the figure of Synesius – which is ambiguous only in appearance – and of his On Dreams. In particular, the class will deal with the reception of the work in late Byzantium. In fact, in the 14th century Synesius’s treaty was commented by two important Byzantine scholars, approximately in the same period. The examination of the text will be crucial to comprehend the most profound reasons which led some Byzantine intellectuals to become interested in Neoplatonic doctrines during the Palaiologan age.

The woman's body in the Christian imaginary: discourses and images from the Ancient and Medieval Christianity

The reflection on the female body and the manifold declinations of its instrumentalization, which has been set at the center of the contemporary debate by the feminist thought, is of current issue and controversy. How has the woman's body been represented by the Christian authors and the few Christian women writers during Ancient and Medieval Times? How has it been depicted inart ? The course aims to face the subject of the female body according to an historical perspective, considering such a body in its biological and cultural dimension, keeping in mind the most broadly shared medical and philosophical conceptions , the metaphoric language, the cultural models and the exegetical developments. Virgins, martyrs, mothers, martyrs, mothers, brides, widows, nuns: to each category corresponds a body, to whose plasmation contribute homilies of bishops, treatises on virginity, hagiographic novels, martyrs' passions, historiographical works, pictorial representations.
Students attending the course are required to write a short paper on a chosen topic .

Women in Modern Christianity

Starting from the historiographical discussion on the relationship between the feminine and the sacred, the course intends to analyse models and experiences of the presence and role of women within Christian Churches, ecclesiastical institutions and religious life, highlighting their paths and their evolution in the last two centuries in conjunction with the epochal changes in society, customs and culture that have involved women and their social, cultural and religious status. Sources produced by women themselves or concerning them and historiographical debates on the presence and role of women in life and management of Churches and in the related spirituality will be taken into consideration.
