The course is an introduction to the philosophy of mind informed by cognitive sciences. Cognitive science investigates complex organisms at the information-processing level of analysis, and it can be defined a peculiar level in the sense that it is suspended between two worlds. On the one hand, there is the ordinary image of ourselves as persons, namely as self-conscious, intentional, rational agents. On the other hand, we have the sub-personal sphere of the cerebral events, as investigated by neuroscience. Therefore, one of the main tasks for the philosopher of psychology is to unravel this peculiarity, trying to shed some light upon the relations between these different ways of describing ourselves. This course critically explores some classical attempts to accomplish this task.

In the first part of the course, origins and history of advertising will be illustrated, along with the organization of advertising industry and its main professional figures; drawing on many case studies, different advertising techniques and strategies will be presented, showing how these change according to different media (printed ads, TV commercials, web ads, etc. will be taken into consideration). Finally, theoretical frameworks will be discussed and applied to specific advertisements. The second part of the course focuses on what is probably to be considered advertising’s main ‘resource’ and most longstanding weakness at the same time: the use of stereotypes. After addressing stereotypes in theoretical terms and explaining the reasons for their widespread use and ‘efficacy’, we will focus on three categories of stereotypes commonly found in advertisements: 1) gender and ‘heteronormativity’ (how are female and male subjects and bodies depicted in ads? What are the reasons for and the effects of privileging heterosexual couples?); 2) age (which products/services/goods is the use of elderly in advertising limited to? Are old women and old men ‘used’ in the same way?); 3) race (in which roles non-Caucasian people feature in in advertising images and discourse?). Several forms of communication will be deconstructed and re-constructed in order to challenge common places and to analyze how (hetero)sexism, racism, and ageism work in advertising.

The first module will focus upon key moments in the origins and evolution of the transatlantic relationship during the Cold War, such as the Atlantic Charter, the Marshall plan, the formation and evolution of NATO, the Suez Canal crisis and the Vietnam conflict, and proposals for a new transatlantic bargain. The second module will discuss transatlantic relations after the end of the East-West division. While the central theme of the course will be the history of relations between the United States and Europe, analytical perspectives about the nature of the transatlantic community will also be presented and debated.
Students that have successfully passed this course will possess:

Students will acquire specialized competences to be applied to methodologies of text analysis of the literatures of English-speaking countries, considered in their transcultural dimension and also in relation to relevant issues in the teaching of literature. Students will refine their abilities in independently referring to, and problematizing, updated theoretical frameworks in their analyses of texts and literary phenomena from a cultural and linguistic point of view. They will also be trained to recognize interconnections between literary language and the languages of other forms of expression, with specific reference to methods and problems in teaching literature.

Objectives: Students are expected to acquire the advanced skills required to analyze complex texts and the literary phenomena of the Anglophone world viewed in a transcultural context, also in relation to translation and the teaching of literature. They are also expected to refine their ability to employ in a problematic manner the sophisticated theoretical tools which will enable them to engage in a culturalist and linguistic analysis of texts and cultural phenomena, as well as in the analysis of the interrelations between literary language and other narrative forms.
Programme
The course will set out by attempting an historical and cultural synthesis of the different strands that went into the making of British Modernism, which was at the same time a transnational phenomenon and a crucial passage in the history of English literature. The study of some of the major Modernist poets’ and novelists’ main texts will serve the purpose of casting light on the theoretical significance of the formal and stylistic experimentations that went into their making. This way, it will become possible to then understand the role those theories played once an institutionalized version of ‘Modernism’ became the foundation of the academic teaching of English literature. The critical edition of medieval romance texts The course will be focused on the main methodological problems in ecdotics and textual criticism with regard to medieval romance narrative, through examples in two or three Romance languages. It will therefore examine the process of establishing a critical text: the handwritten tradition, the importance of variants and error, building of a stemma codicum, the critical edition of a text.
