the origins and the open questions of Artificial intelligence The course is dedicated to the birth of Artificial intelligence which happened more or less together witht the birth of the first electronic computers. The term was invented in 1956, but the discussion around the possibilities and consequences of what was called mechanical or machine intelligence started during the early Fifties and even earlier. The Famous Turing Test created a huge interest since it was invented and proposed in 1950 by Alan Turing. Many years and many different methods were considered since AI origins, now many perspectives and technologies changed since then, in order to solve problems that required intelligence and problem solving capabilities to be solved. At present there are many soft bots, many robot and many artificial devices that with the help of algorithms seem to espress intelligence and oblige us to change the concept of intelligence itself, both if applied to humans or to machines. the most interesting phenomenon is the tendence to attribute to machine intelligent capabilities, mainly when we don't know precisely how the machine works. This social dimention in attributing intelligence to machines was underlined by Turing too at the very beginning of machine intelligence reflection. However this characteristic risks to produce unintendend and undesired consequences for human beings. we know that not many ara capable of understanding how to program a deep learning algorithm, and that more and more even programmers ignore how the machine produced the output results, because the layers of calculations are too difficult to follow in details also by those who programmed them. We know that only a small group of programmers and experts know the details. they tend to be trained by the same universities and to be hired by the same few multinational companies. There are political and social problems that need a solution when we introduce a new AI tool. Innovation is not enough we need to build tools that are fair and useful to promote the development and wellbeing of all humans and not only of a small minority. the course proposes some methods and histories to understand the political and social dimensions of the technological choices around us, with special regard to AI.

The course focuses on language pathologies, with particular attention to the deficits related to the discursive communication. Among the cases discusses, there are the communicative deficits characterizing pathologies such as autism, schizophrenia, and traumatic brain injury. In such cases, as well as in many neuropsychological and psychopathological disorders, the communicative impairments mainly concern the level of discourse and depend on deficits that primarily involve the cognitive dimension, rather than the linguistic one. Thus, the study of discourse disorders is particularly useful to investigate a more general question that is extremely relevant from a theoretical point of view: the relationships between language and cognition.

The course intends to give students theoretical and applied linguistics knowledge on spanish language in the context of international communication. In particular, the module will deal with aspects related to Spanish and the new technologies, in a double perspective. The course includes the study of the general features of the specialized languages and of various types of written texts. The horizontal dimension, i.e. the subject based stratification of these languages and texts , and the vertical dimension, i.e. the communicative situation and specific use related stratification, will be both considered. The second part of the course will include the translation problems of specialized languages on the basis of these reflections, with practical experiences in the translation of authentic texts of various types.

"The multilingual mental lexicon"
This seminar addresses psycholinguistic and neurolinguistic aspects of multilingualism. In a first part it will be illustrated how different languages are interconnected in the brain and how second and third language acquisition can be explained from a psycholinguistic perspective. In the main part the seminar focuses on the organization of the bilingual mental lexicon: In a first step, models will be presented that had been developed to explain the monolingual mental lexicon. It will be discussed what aspects of these models can be transferred to model the bilingual mental lexicon. In a second step, different aspects of bilingual models will be focused on such as types of language acquisition (including studies from brain research), role of phonetic similarity, culture-specific orientation of mental concepts etc. Finally, we will discuss the way the mental lexicon is accessed. In this seminar students will also conduct some little psycholinguistic experiments (e.g. loud-thinking protocols, association experiments in various languages). In doing so they will become familiar with empirical research methods on the one hand, and will get insights into the organization of the multilingual mental lexicon on the other.

"The multilingual mental lexicon"
This seminar addresses psycholinguistic and neurolinguistic aspects of multilingualism. In this seminar students will also conduct some little psycholinguistic experiments (e.g. loud-thinking protocols, association experiments in various languages). In doing so they will become familiar with empirical research methods on the one hand, and will get insights into the organization of the multilingual mental lexicon on the other.

In recent decades, the theme of local development has assumed a central role in the development debate. The lessons will present the concepts and methods of local development, understood not only as a growth process for an aggregation of local companies, but as a diversified territorial development process based on SELF-ORGANIZING CAPACITY OF LOCAL NETWORKS OF ACTORS and on the sustainable exploitation of tangible and intangible resources available in a certain territory, including the social and cultural spheres. The high expectations of the early days on the potential of local development has recently been followed by a less optimistic phase. Today's challenge is to avoid the trap of localism and rethink local development even in new terms, to give cities and territories the ability to respond to economic, social and environmental pressures of the globalized world. Special attention will also be given to the "NEW" FORMS OF TOURIST DEVELOPMENT.Some case studies in Italy not only will help to deepen some of the addressed issues. There will be lectures, eventual seminars and an educational excursion.

n the first part of the course, origins and history of advertising will be illustrated, along with the organization of advertising industry and its main professional figures; drawing on many case studies, different advertising techniques and strategies will be presented, showing how these change according to different media (printed ads, TV commercials, web ads, etc. will be taken into consideration). Finally, theoretical frameworks will be discussed and applied to specific advertisements. The second part of the course focuses on what is probably to be considered advertising’s main ‘resource’ and most longstanding weakness at the same time: the use of stereotypes. After addressing stereotypes in theoretical terms and explaining the reasons for their widespread use and ‘efficacy’, we will focus on three categories of stereotypes commonly found in advertisements: 1) gender and ‘heteronormativity’ (how are female and male subjects and bodies depicted in ads? What are the reasons for and the effects of privileging heterosexual couples?); 2) age (which products/services/goods is the use of elderly in advertising limited to? Are old women and old men ‘used’ in the same way?); 3) race (in which roles non-Caucasian people feature in in advertising images and discourse?). Several forms of communication will be deconstructed and re-constructed in order to challenge common places and to analyze how (hetero)sexism, racism, and ageism work in advertising. In the final part of the course, we will analyze how advertising normalizes, legitimizes, even celebrates the use of violence.

The course adopts an international and comparative approach to women’s history in the contemporary age. It will encompass both methodological issues, such as the use of gender as a category or of biographies, and aspects of the condition of women and the process of their emancipation in Italy and in other western countries. Students will be able to analyze themes of interest to them through discussion and individual or group presentations during classes, and choose most of the texts for the final exam.

Teaching European languages: structure of lexicon and learning. Reflexions on the complex relationships among lexical items within languages, and on the fact that they do not overlap across languages. Comprehension of the role of lexicon in communication, particularly in foreign language learning. Knowledge of meaning-building processes by means of examples taken from the productions of non-native speakers of the languages taught in the department and in Italian schools. Analysis of how teaching materials reflect theoretical principles.

Through the reading of a selection of passages from works of poetry of the Old (Beowulf and other texts) and Middle English literary tradition (Chaucer and the Gawain’poet), the main features of the conventions of hospitality in medieval English literature will be identified. Banquet scenes - to be interpreted as visible signs of magnificence, power and idealized order- will also be addressed through references to other works of the Germanic world, mainly German and Norse.
The philological-literary analysis of these texts will be combined with an outline of the fundamental changes of the English language through the centuries.
