The course takes as its focus knowledge and passion in the philosophy of David Hume. The first part is a critical examination of the thesis treating the theoretical work of the British empiricists as the work of just one school of thought, and of the thesis portraying the empiricism-rationalism divide as inherent to the Western philosophical tradition. The second and third part of the course have analytic character and are concerned with the critical examination of Hume's Traetise.

Module A
After a brief description of the main medieval philosophical tendencies, the course will focus on how the elements of Greek philosophy are reconsidered in the theological categories of Christianity. Through the analytical reading of selected sections from the Monologion and the Proslogion it will be examined Anselm’s original metaphysics, with particular reference to theology and to the ideas of nothing and truth.
Module B
The course will deepen the interpretation of Anselm’s philosophy through the reading and the comment of large sections from the Monologion, the De veritate and the Proslogion.

The first module addresses the key steps of Foucault’s analytics of power: the relations between power and knowledge, sovereign power and pastoral power, power exerted on individuals and power exerted on the community.
Module B
The second module addresses the connection between “care of the self”—in classical ethics— and the constitution of the subject on the basis of a well-known course held by Foucault at the Collège de France in 1981-82. By comparing the ancient ethics—grounded on the epimeleia heautou—to the following developments, the course shows a paradoxical outcome: the distinguishing feature of modernity is neither autonomy nor self-control, but the subject being a stranger to himself.

After providing the essential methodological tools to understand the economic history, the course outlines the formation and the development of the main capitalistic economies both in Europe and out of Europe between 19th and 20th centuries.
I. The first and second industrial revolution

- Expanded commercial agricultural revolution and industrial revolution in Britain in the eighteenth century.
- The process of capitalist concentration in the nineteenth century and the second industrial revolution.
II. Economic development in the 20th century
- Industry, trade networks, financial markets on the eve of the First World War.
- The economic cycles in the postwar period
- The crisis of 1929 and national policies in the '30s.

Through the reading of philosophical and literary texts, the workshop aims to introduce students to the basic textual and philosophical practices: analysis, synthesis, problematization, conceptualization, argumentation, imagination, storytelling, meditation, dialogue. Classical texts and their interpretations will provide significant opportunities for attention training, active listening and writing.
