WE WILL USE THE PRINCIPLES OF DESCRIPTIVE GEOMETRY TO ILLUSTRATE THE GEOMETRIC MODEL OF AN OBJECT BASED ON THE PREMISE THAT DESCRIPTIVE GEOMETRY IS REQUIRED TO UNDERSTAND THREE-DIMENSIONAL SPACE, TO ANALYSE AND RECREATE AN OBJECT WHETHER IT BE A DETAIL, A BUILDING OR AN URBAN SPACE. THE MAIN AIM OF THE COURSE WILL BE TO TEACH STUDENTS HOW TO UNDERSTAND THE SPACE, DIMENSIONS AND PROPORTIONS OF THE OBJECTS STUDIED USING THE VARIOUS METHODS IN A COMPLEMENTARY MANNER.
DESCRIPTION OF THE COURSE. THE COURSE WILL BE DIVIDED INTO TWO CLOSELY-RELATED PARTS: A THEORETICAL PART WHERE STUDENTS WILL BE PROVIDED WITH INFORMATION AND TAUGHT THE PRINCIPLES AND RULES GOVERNING ARCHITECTURAL REPRESENTATION AND DESIGN, AND A PRACTICAL PART WHERE THEY WILL CARRY OUT AD HOC AND EXTEMPORE EXERCISES AND EXAMINE THE GEOMETRIC AND PROJECTIVE CHARACTERISTICS OF SEVERAL DRAWINGS. USING REPRESENTATION METHODS, ORTHOGONAL PROJECTIONS, AXOMETRIC PROJECTIONS AND PERSPECTIVE WE WILL DESCRIBE GEOMETRIC PROPERTIES, PARALLELISM, INTERSECTION AND DETERMINE THE REAL DIMENSION AND FORM OF PLANE FIGURES. SPECIAL ATTENTION WILL BE GIVEN TO SECTIONS AND THEIR GEOMETRIC CONSTRUCTION AS WELL AS THE PLANE DEVELOPMENT OF THREE-DIMENSIONAL FIGURES SO THAT THEY CAN BE MANUALLY RECREATED. In the first phase of the course, the students are shown an organic up-date of the instruments available to optimize the architects results in improving the living systems.
To give a clear illustration of innovative projects, focus will be given to two particular issues:
1) the energetic behavior of the constructions through a systematic exam of the building’s outer skin and of the available resources
2) the impact of the industrial process and therefore the materials and the activities that allow the reduction of the anthropic impact
These issues are to be developed by the students through the realization of a project aimed at he satisfaction of goals which have to be reached through the use of innovative instruments, in relation to specific requirements of the location and the usage thereof.

1) in sintesi:
a starting from systematic knowledge on the chemical-physical characteristics of the main materials that can be used in construction (ceramic, metal, organic, natural and synthetic) and on their transformative possibilities in semi-finished products, components and structural systems, the student will critically investigate the most appropriate use and economically congruent at:
- configuration of the architectural image of the buildings;
- construction of their spatialities;
- optimization of their environmental qualities.
This starts from the study of simple examples of architectures - contemporary and non-contemporary - selected in order to allow effective critical connections between the conformation of their tectonic system and the construction solutions that allow the connection of their functional parts throughout the constructed work.
These solutions will be tested on four different construction types:
masonry construction systems;
wooden construction systems;
reinforced concrete construction systems;
steel construction systems;
mixed systems.
2) a consideration.
beyond a broad classification, however to be expressed more in conceptual than taxonomic terms, returning an organic framework of materials and production and assembly techniques that can be used today by the designer in construction is practically impossible, given the vast manuals available (unfortunately , not always effectively usable) and the equally vast amount of information that can be extracted from the web (unfortunately, not always controllable in their performance aspects). It is therefore considered formally more useful and appropriate for university architecture studies, to provide the student with adequate methodological bases to build, around the possible materials that can be used in the project investigated / developed from time to time, a detailed network of knowledge that will guide them responsibly to assess whether the technical solutions adopted / adoptable are appropriate with respect to the system of objectives that each project, by its intrinsic definition, aims to achieve.
The attention of the course will therefore be focused on some simple construction methods, within the scope of a first year, but able to relate the current practice with the complex set of interactions between technology, architecture and the environment, also starting students to understand the evolutionary nature of these interactions.

The course deals with materials, construction techniques and construction elements, and will highlight their historical evolution and the relationship between construction techniques and the conception of the architectural space in relation to the basic principles of structural functioning and the building envelope. The approaches to each topic are related to:

- the building as a system of related architectural, functional and construction elements in order to deliver the performances;

Students (individual or in groups of two) will be involved in the project of a small public building - a museum - in the former slaughterhouse in Testaccio. The museum architecture, beyond its specialized aspects, appears particularly well qualified to experience the first approach to a complex building, for its aesthetic and functional constraints, for the presence of different uses, and for his close relationship with public space. From this point of view, locating in the former slaughterhouse is focusing on familiarity that students have with the place, in order to implement the project with the experience already acquired in terms of measures and use of space, as well as relationships with the urban context.
We will alternate lectures, focus upon individual design aspects, laboratory work, exercises on specific issues, with the aim to advance the student's architectural skills and the representation / presentation of their ideas. There will be periodic connections and shared experiences with the two parallel courses.

THE OBJECTIVE OF THE COURSE AIMS TO TRANSFER THEIR THEORETICAL KNOWLEDGE OF PHYSICS IN THE FIELD OF ARCHITECTURAL DISCIPLINES AND TO PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH THE INSTRUMENTS NECESSARY TO DESIGN IN A HOLISTIC WAY. IN ARCHITECTURE, IN FACT, THE URGENCY OF AN INCREASING ADHERENCE OF CONSTRUCTION TECHNIQUES, MATERIALS AND ENERGY CONSUMPTION TODAY IS PRESENT TO WHAT ARE THE NEEDS OF A POSITIVE ENVIRONMENTAL BALANCE. THE DEFINITION OF CONSTRUCTION TECHNOLOGIES ACCORDING TO AN ECOLOGICAL VISION OF ARCHITECTURE AND SPACE AIR CONDITIONING TECHNIQUES, CONCURRED IN THE FORMATION OF A MORE COMPLETE BUILDING DESIGN METHODOLOGY. IN THIS VIEW, THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE USE OF NATURAL SOURCES (HEATING, COOLING, NATURAL LIGHTING), THE KNOWLEDGE OF MATERIALS AND ECO-COMPATIBLE COMPONENTS, THE DEFINITION OF THE BUILDING, BUILDING, BUILDING (BUILDING BUILDING) QUALITY. THEREFORE THERE IS THE ETHICAL REQUIREMENT OF A DECREASE, EQUAL TO SERVICES RENDERED, OF THE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT OF BUILDING. In the last fifty years of the last century, cities have more than doubled their physical size and, in general, land use, for urbanization purposes, has grown exponentially. It is an urbanized area that, in some cases, has also become a metropolis but without passing through the city. A territory whose structure is not stable but where everything still needs to be rethought, modified.
An increasingly diverse and fragmented population crosses this territory, inhabits it, uses it and transforms it. The city is crossed less and less by the inhabitants and increasingly by individuals who use it. A floating population crosses the places of the city, uses them, demands that the city works but does not care for it: the city as a product, not as a social construction.
In this scenario, traditional urban planning tools risk being reduced to mere knowledge of techniques without understanding, or without being aware of, the effects and implications of doing.

Lessons and laboratory activities, with the active participation of students, will explore the main theoretical evolutions of urban studies. Students will be offered the twofold theoretical matrix of urban planning: the theories of why, in the sense of the reasons for urban planning, and the theories of how in the sense of the formation of the city and the structuring of the territory produced by different anthropic activities.
The course has the following objectives:
1. give students a representation as comprehensive as possible of the theoretical conceptualizations of urban problems;
2. to help students develop their creative skills and critical sense in the perspective of an operational practice that concerns the transformation processes of the built city;
3. enable students to read an urban context through urban exploration and the collection of indirect data;
4. enable students to formulate an urban project that contains appropriate intervention proposals for urban restructuring processes.
In addition, students will be called upon to argue the proposals for intervention, to support and defend them through public communications.

The aim of the course is to make the student think about the design of a building in its urban and architectural dimension; about the coherence between form, functional program, typology and structure.
The course is developed in theoretical lessons and exercises. The final exercise concerns the design of a residential building with attached services, within an empty area of a dense urban fabric. The building will thus have to be conceived as a part of the city, as an element capable of completing the urban landscape and relating to public space. At the same time it will have to answer, in its articulation and internal organization, the necessities of private life, the theme of the housing.

The aim of the course is to make the student think about the design of a building in its urban and architectural dimension; about the coherence between form, functional program, typology and structure.
The course is developed in theoretical lessons and exercises. The final exercise concerns the design of a residential building with attached services, within an empty area of a dense urban fabric. The building will thus have to be conceived as a part of the city, as an element capable of completing the urban landscape and relating to public space. At the same time it will have to answer, in its articulation and internal organization, the necessities of private life, the theme of the housing.
