The Course “General Linguistics 1A” (“Language structures”) falls within the domain of the Basic learning activities labelled“Philology, General and Applied Linguistics” of the Degree Course in Languages and Cultural-Linguistic Mediation, specifically the activities aiming at providing adequate tools for the analysis and the theoretical study of languages and language. The Course has the aim of providing: advanced competences in the analysis and reflection on the theoretical and methodological aspects of syntactic investigation, starting from the correlation between semantic roles and phrasal structure to the interaction between syntax and discourse grammar (information structure and “interfaces”). Reflection and formal analysis will be particularly focused on the curricular languages of students. This course deals with theoretical and methodological aspect of syntactic analysis (for advanced students). It can be divided into two parts. In the first part the notion of “deep structure” is resumed and analysed in detail; then the correlation between deep and surface structure is discussed in order to proceed into the analysis of sentence structure.

In this respect, special attention will be devoted to the analysis of Case assignment, binding relation, constituent movement and different types of embedded structure (raising, control structures, complements of perception verbs). In the second part the interface between syntax and discourse grammar is approached (“information structure”), with special attention to the syntactic realization of discourse categories such as Focus, Topic and Contrast; their properties will be discussed, also from a comparative perspective. The course “Educational Linguistics” falls within the domain of the basic learning activities labelled "Philology, General and Applied Linguistics" of the degree course in Languages and Cultural- Linguistic Mediation, specifically the activities aimed at providing basic training in the methods and tools of analysis and reflection proper to language learning and teaching.
The course aims to provide: Knowledge of the phenomena that characterize the process of language acquisition (first, second and foreign), with particular attention to the linguistic aspects related to the sequences of acquisition and the development of the ability to use: variability, systematicity and factors internal and external to the individual that affect the path of acquisition. Knowledge of the characteristics of the interaction between native and non-native speaker, and of its effects on the acquisition of L2: modifications and negotiation of input, role of output and feedback. Knowledge of the process of developing competence in the use of a foreign language, with attention to the role of context, input, as well as the learning strategies involved. Knowledge of the processes of developing language skills, through examples of the various languages taught in the Department and in Italian schools, including Italian for foreigners. Development of the metalinguistic reflection, in a transversal way, giving particular importance to the comparison between languages and to the valorization of the linguistic repertoire of the learners. Knowledge of the role of teaching in language learning, with particular reference to the main teaching methodologies developed in research, to optimize and enhance learning processes, including through the use of new digital technologies. Expected learning outcomes: students will know the research on spontaneous and guided learning of foreign languages and the aspects related to the order of acquisition; they will be able to carry out metalinguistic reflections; they will be aware of their linguistic repertoire and will know how to use the comparison between languages to optimize their learning; they will know the processes of learning and use of the foreign language, the role of context and learning strategies; they will know the processes of listening, speaking, reading and writing of foreign languages and Italian L2; they will know the main methodologies and technologies for teaching.

The Course “General Linguistics 1B” (“Syntax and the Languages of the World”) falls within the domain of the Basic learning activities labelled “Philology, General and Applied Linguistics” of the Degree Course in Languages and Cultural-Linguistic Mediation, specifically the activities aiming at providing adequate tools for the analysis and the theoretical study of languages and language.
The module has the aim to provide competences on syntactic analysis and skills in the application of the acquired abilities in the comparison between different languages; knowledge of the diverse types of classification (languages families; typological and areal linguistics), critical reflection on the different levels of linguistic analysis, including the relation between the formal, semantic and pragmatic aspects of languages (“interfaces”). This course deals with theoretical and methodological aspect of syntactic analysis (for advanced students). It can be divided into two parts. In the first part the notion of “deep structure” is resumed and analysed in detail; then the correlation between deep and surface structure is discussed in order to proceed into the analysis of sentence structure.

The Course “Educational linguistics” falls within the domain of the Basic learning activities labelled “Philology, General and Applied Linguistics” of the Degree Course in Languages and Cultural-Linguistic Mediation, specifically the activities aiming at providing adequate tools for the analysis and the theoretical study of language acquisition and language teaching.
The course aims to provide: Knowledge of the phenomena characterising the process of spontaneous acquisition of languages, with a specific focus on developmental sequences in interlanguage and the development of the ability to use Italian as an L2. Attention to variability, systematicity and factors affecting the developmental path. Knowledge of the characteristic of the interaction between native and non-native speakers, and of its importance for language acquisition. Focus on input modification and negotiation, the role of input and feedback. Knowledge of the role of instruction in language learning, with specific reference to how teachers can strenghthen and enhance the natural process of language acquisition. Development of intercultural competence based on awareness about the relationship between language and culture. The role of culture in the learning process of a second language, with particular reference to linguistic pragmatics as an interface between language and culture. Knowledge of the main instruments used to analyse linguistic behaviour in different cultures, and of the main results of research in the area of cross-cultural, intercultural and interlanguage pragmatics. Knowledge of the role of instruction in the learning of pragmatic aspects of an L2, and ability to reflect on learnability and teachability of cultural-pragmatic aspects of second languages. An overview of some key issues in second language learning research, with particular reference to the concept of interlanguage and the characteristics of interlanguage development in relationship to the four macro skills. The Course “General Linguistics 3” falls within the domain of the Basic learning activities labelled “Philology, General and Applied Linguistics” of the Degree Course in Languages and Cultural-Linguistic Mediation, specifically the activities aiming at providing adequate tools for the analysis and the theoretical study of languages and language.
The Course is divided into two modules, according to the student’s choice: 1st module ("Typology, universals and brain") and 2nd module ("Diacrony"). The module “Typology, universals and the brain” has the aim of providing the foundations of linguistic typology, with special reference to morphological and syntactic typology. Typology and Universals. Biological conditions for language. The module “Diachrony” has the aim of providing basic knowledge in relation to linguistic change, at different levels of analysis, and to Indo-European comparison, with attention also to areal and typological comparison.
