(objectives)
The course aims at analyzing the role of both the director and the screen writer.
-
ZAGARRIO VITO
( syllabus)
The course is divided in two main sections: one dedicated to the Italian film director Nanni Moretti, the other one dedicated to the craft of film writing*. Through a series of Master Classes and a series of film screenings, the course wants to re.think about the film professions, above all the directing and the scriptwriting.
* Because of a collaboration between the University of Rome 3 and the Solinas Prize, the professor has decided to change the program focusing its attention both to the screen writing and directing. The students non following the course can take the exam with the already announced program. All the DAMS students can follow the Master Classes on screen writng. Attending these special meetings and the film retrospective at the Palladium Theatre, they will deserve 6 CFU. Obviously, the students regularly enrolled in the class will only deserve 6 CFU.

COMUNICAZIONE PUBBLICA
(objectives)
The course focuses on the public communication and it provides to the students the analytical tools necessary to analyze how the public discourse is socially constructed and culturally shaped.
-
TOTA ANNA LISA
( syllabus)
The first part aims at analysing the forms of public communication and the ways in which different institutions classify, think and speak within the public space, with a special focus on the role played by the media . Topics covered include: the articulation of public discourse in different national contexts, the processes of formation of public opinion, the relationship between media and new technologies. The second part analyses the public communication of the past, with particular reference to its cultural shapes. To what extent cinema, theatre and museums can contribute to producing the public knowledge of very controversial pasts? To what extent the public knowledge of the Holocaust can be shaped through a movie or a comic (for example, Maus by Art Spiegelman)? A song can change the social trajectories of collective and social memories (the case of “Nick and Bart” by Joan Baez on Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti)? To what extent a theatrical performance on Ustica can contribute to the public knowledge of the event itself? Can we learn something new on September 11th thanks to a series of short films dedicated to it? These are some of the questions, which the course will focus on.

GENDER AND MEDIA
(objectives)
This course aims to: 1) enable students to understand and critically analyze how femininity and masculinity are depicted in media contents, and to assess if these representations are likely to challenge or to reinforce gender inequalities and discriminations; 2) stimulate students’ reflections on the relation between their past and present media consumption/use on the one hand and their gender identity/sexual orientation on the other. Programs, course hours, and teaching materials on www.mediastudies.it
-
Derived from
20704072 COMUNICAZIONE PUBBLICITARIA in INFORMAZIONE, EDITORIA, GIORNALISMO (DM 270) LM-19 GIOMI ELISA
( syllabus)
The course focuses on the relation between media representations/uses and gender/sexual identity. Precise models of femininity and masculinity can be found in the symbolic materials (images, narratives, values, etc.) offered by media and in the forms of social interactions made possible either by ‘old’ and ‘new’ media. TV programmes, web contents, movies, newspapers, and magazines either directly and indirectly attribute different interests, attitudes, abilities to men and women. In so doing, media offer useful resources that we can use in developing our gender identity and sexual orientation, learning how to dress up, to behave, and to desire ‘as a woman’ or ‘as a man’. Yet media representations can also act as prescriptions that are likely to restrict individuals’ freedom and authenticity, to fuel unrealistic expectations, and to reinforce gender power system. Drawing on these premises, first a definition of gender, sex and gender identity will be provided; the main approaches and theoretical contributions to studying the relation of media and gender identity will be illustrated; finally, we will focus on the analysis of media outputs, in order to individuate the most critical aspects: stereotyped/denigratory images of females and males; unrealistic representation of bodies and sexualities; invisibility of non-normative gender identities, couples, and families. Special attention will be paid to the depiction of violence in the media, that constitutes a very breeding ground for exploring media construction of femininity, masculinity, and of intimate relations. Both factual (news, documentaries) and fictional (comics, TV series, movies) products will be taken into consideration, in order to analyze the discoursive production of victims and perpetrators, with particular regard to female violence.
Syllabus
1) The difference and the ‘invisible norm’. Some semiotic systems under analysis (during this lesson, students will be asked to spend a hour outside and take pictures following the instructor’s directions; 2) Byological Determinis, sex, gender, gender identity and roles; 3) Gender and the media: the evolution of theoretical approaches since the ‘70s onwards 4) Sex, gender and class in past and contemporary mainstream cinema; from ’Rocky 2’ to ’Honey 2’; 5) Heroines in male genres/contexts/roles: horror, sci-fi, western and crime; 6) Violent femmes: the ’rape-revenge motive’ in media popular culture; 7) Focus on Stieg Larsson’s Millennium Trilogy: men’s aggression and women’s response. A psychoanalytic reading; 8) Gender and violence in the news: ’ideal victims’ and ‘good girls’, ‘typical perpetrators’ and ‘bed men’ in TV broadcasts and press coverage of femicide. 9) Makeover television; 10) Advertising: men, women and the ‘heteronromative’ ideology.

CINEMA AND HISTORY
(objectives)
The course focuses on the relationship between cinema and history by convening a series of perspectives and knowledge able to clarify and deepen this crucial relationship that constitutes the very status of the cinema, since its origins. We will look at the cinema as hybrid and expanded horizon, therefore as a context that includes, even in the relationship with history, bordering or not "orthodox" media as television, photography, video, videogames. Among the objectives of the course: the examination of the different modes of "textualisation" of historical reality implemented within the iconic and audiovisual media; the exploration and interpretation of production mechanisms, forms and language with reference to the dynamics of audiovisual cultural and historical identity of an era; verification of how iconic objects and audiovisual media are "agents of history."

FILM CRITICISM WORKSHOP
Program
Film criticism is not taught, it is learned and it is practiced by watching films and discussing them. The Workshop is based essentially on exercizes and interactions.
Exercize 1. Seeing the film. From sacred viewing to multiform viewing (new platforms, new habits, new viewers). To orient oneself critically in the contemporary chaos of images: to make order, to distinguish, simply “to see”. Evolution and diversification in writing criticism.
Exercize 2. Analyzing film. Notes on some methodological and analytical tools: formalism, structuralism, semiology, psychoanalysis (manifest content and latent content). Description and evaluation. Text and context. The reality represented and the representation of reality. Criticism as a form of thought.
Exercize 3. Verbalizing judgment. Content, structure, form, finalization. At the service of the work, from the viewer’s point of view. Against criticism of taste (Galvano Della Volpe), against interpretation (Susan Sontag), against sociologism, aesthetic mysticism, idealism. Critical models and the system of reference.
Exercize 4. Of prejudice and novelty. Auteur cinema and so-called commercial film (genres). Greta Garbo vs Doris Day. TV series (new forms, new dramaturgy, new expectations).
Exercize 5. Specialization and contamination. Specialist criticism and multidisciplinary criticism. From the filmic specifics to postmodernism. From André Bazin’s ‘What is Cinema?’ to the films to come.
