“Aristocracy by birth, aristocracy by service. The inscriptions of the praetorian prefects of the 4th century”.
The praetorian prefecture was reformed by Constantine the sole Augustus between 326 and 328 AD. The transformation of the office from a role dangerously close to the Augusti to the top of the diocesan and provincial administration, definitively distant from the person of the emperor, explains the evolution of the typology of epigraphic messages relating to the late antique praetorian prefects. The new institutional status of the office in the 4th century had important epigraphic reflections on the typology and preservation of the inscribed monuments erected in honour of the prefects and commissioned by the prefects themselves. It is possible to reflect on the consistency and representativeness of this surviving epigraphic materials.The student is asked to reconstruct the historical context of the careers of the prefects, to formulate hypotheses on the paths of realization and preservation of the inscribed monuments, as well as to outline the social profile of this aristocracy at the top of the late Roman Empire: the aristocracy by birth, and the aristocracy of individuals ascended for their meritorious service.

The course aims to offer: (1) an introduction to the Hellenistic world, to the world of the Greek poleis at that time and to the new phenomenon of royalty: greek poleis’ political institutions (in the aspects of continuity and evolution), the role of the élite, poleis relationships with the sovereigns, and the intense mutual interconnection between them, made of diplomatic relations, exchange of honors and judges, recognition of syngeneia, common participation in cults will be studied and considered. The topics will be addressed taking into account literary, epigraphic, archaeological and iconographic sources. (2) An introduction to the main databases of Greek literary texts and inscriptions and to the most important bibliographic research tools. (3) The presentation by the students of some topics related to the course and agreed with the teacher.

TITLE OF THE COURSE: The pseudo-Augustinian treatise De spiritu et anima (late 12th-early 13th century).

DESCRIPTION: First of all, the course intends to outline, in broad terms, the developments of a theme - that of the soul - dear to the tradition of Western thought since its beginnings, and capable, in addition to incessantly nourishing high-level philosophical and religious reflection, also to have a singular impact on mentalities, on the imaginary, on life conduct, on the self-perception and representation of man in Western culture, and in particular in the Latin Middle Ages. A work will then be analyzed - the De spiritu et anima - of uncertain attribution, datable between the end of the 12th and the beginning of the 13th century, which enjoyed great success in the Middle Ages, and which - due to its eclectic character, but not lacking of originality - is well suited to provide a complex and problematic status quaestionis on the subject, before the most complete elaborations of Scholasticism. - As part of the module will also be activated exercises designed to guide the knowledge and use of the main electronic resources for the study and research on the Latin authors of the Middle Ages.

The course aims to address the study of the characteristics of Latin and Greek manuscripts, with particular regard to their value for philological and historical-cultural studies. In this regard, both the external characteristics of manuscripts will be examined (material techniques for the preparation of the book as a physical object, methods and tools for its preparation, with regard to the professional figures involved in the production process), and the cultural panorama of the times and places of origin of manuscript books. Therefore, each aspect will be illustrated by choosing a reference manuscript witness.
This course will include both the examination of reproductions of manuscripts, in paper and electronic format, and the direct examination of manuscripts and writing materials, through visits to archives and libraries.

The final exam will include the knowledge of the material provided during lessons and the discussion of one subject which the student will decide to study in depth. In addition students are required to study the following texts:

Early Christian sexual ethics

During the first centuries, Christians elaborated their own sexual ethics, which can be understood only if framed within a broader scenario that includes Greco-Roman philosophical and literary reflection and the Jewish heritage.
The course, through the reading of primary sources and the survey of some significant scholarly approaches to the topic, seeks to explore the main ideas of eros, sexuality and sensuality current in the ancient Christian world and their reflections in the social, cultural and political spheres. In particular, debates about the best form of life - between virginity and marriage -, encratite conceptions, the emergence of a Christian marriage ethic, the condemnation of adultery, and the issue of homosexuality will be considered.

The course aims to deepen, according to various perspectives of investigation (philological, linguistic, literary, historical, doctrinal), two authentic letters of Paul, united by the condition in which they were written: the author, in fact, is a prisoner. In them, the humanity of the sender, the clear identity of the respective addressees, and the relationship that binds both are immediately evident. The themes are different: the first deals with Christian identity and life. The second deals with the phenomenon of slavery, which pertains to the culture and structure of civil society, even though it is obviously treated on the basis of typically Christian criteria.
The course has a seminar character and involves the active participation of students.

Course title 2021-2022: Overabundant multilingual traditions: the case of the Acts of Peter and Paul.

The traditions on the final part of the lives of the individual apostles are not contained in works that have become canonical, but in an apocryphal literary production that is interesting both from the point of view of content and from that of the phenomena of the history of tradition. The course aims to deepen the literary history of the so-called Acts of Peter and Paul, the oldest form of the legend that presents the two apostles associated in the preaching in Rome, in the fight against Simon Magus and in martyrdom. A work of great success, it is transmitted to us in almost all the ancient languages, has about 200 Latin witnesses, about 50 Greek ones and poses literary and philological questions that are still open.
The course has a seminar character and involves the active participation of students.

Through the methods and tools of textual linguistics, the course considers the problems linked to the relationship between linguistic education and literary education and the didactics of text analysis and production. The digital revolution has in fact brought about a change in the reception and production of texts, but also the imposition of a different textuality. In such a scenario, the Italian language teacher is called upon, on the one hand, to deal with these new products and to introduce them into his or her teaching, but must also know how to provide learners with the appropriate tools to receive and produce "traditional" textual products and to approach the literary text. Particular attention is also given to the dimension of interculture and multilingualism: strategies and phenomena will be addressed from the perspective of teaching Italian as L1 and as L2.

On the basis of documents and contemporary testimonies to the different linguistic phenomena, the course will illustrate some aspects of linguistic communication in Latin, considered in its diachronic development (from protohistory to the Romance) and in its various registers (standard and informal). The reading and analysis of various texts regarding Latin Bucolic genre is aimed at providing the tools to grasp the specificities of the historical evolution of the Latin language and to identify its morphosyntactic and stylistic peculiarities. For this purpose the course consists of:
(1) A number of lessons minded in particular to offer an overview of the history of the Latin language from its origins up to the 6th century A.D., through the reconstruction of its evolution in the dimension of language of everyday use and literary language;

Il cataclisma di Elice d’Acaia (373/2 a.C.)
Realtà storica e trasfigurazione storiografica
(con un’escursione al sito Ruins of Helike in Assassin's Creed: Odyssey)

DESCRIZIONE

● Il corso ha impostazione seminariale ed è finalizzato all’acquisizione di una corretta metodologia della ricerca storica. Esso presuppone inoltre il possesso e la riattivazione di una gamma assai diversificata di conoscenze pregresse in campo antichistico più ampio, necessarie per l’applicazione dei metodi di analisi propri dei diversi tipi di fonti.
● Metodi didattici. Si provvederà in primo luogo a recuperare mediante lessici e repertori enciclopedici le informazioni principali sul “cataclisma” di Elice: un eccezionale e complesso parossismo (terremoto, maremoto, improvvisa subsidenza, imponenti frane) che nel 373/2 a.C. determinò la completa scomparsa di questa antica città costiera dell’Acaia peloponnesiaca (insieme con la vicina Bura). Prospezioni sulle coste dell’Acaia e sondaggi sottomarini nel tratto prospiciente del Golfo di Corinto, avviati a partire dal 1988, e poi saggi di scavo a cura della Helike Foundation nel decennio successivo, hanno portato nel 2001 alla sorprendente individuazione sulla terraferma – e non sui fondali del golfo – del sito della città, che le fonti antiche dicevano invece “inabissata”. Le regolari campagne di scavo succedutesi negli ultimi venti anni si prospettano oggi come un inedito “laboratorio sul campo”, in cui la concreta realtà “fisica” di un evento si presta ad essere incrociata e raffrontata con le corrispondenti narrazioni storiche, mettendo in luce in particolare – in queste ultime – il tasso di deformazione, trasfigurazione o vera e propria affabulazione mitizzante dei “fatti”. Questo processo di amplificazione è approdato, nel caso in specie, ad una sorta di versione “in sedicesimo” del mito platonico di Atlantide (un topos che ha finito per ispirare di riflesso persino i moduli rappresentativi del sito Ruins of Helike nel contesto del noto videogioco Assassin's Creed: Odyssey).

This module will provide an interpretation of the crisis of the Roman Republic. Students will read some of the major ancient sources relating to this period (Plutarch, Sallustius and so on). They will be introduced to the figure of Mario and the way in which he came into conflict with Lucio Cornelio Silla, a Roman "warlord", who after victories in the East eventually marched on Rome in 82 and assumed the office of dictator.

The course provides the necessary skills to study all the fragmentary written materials from Antiquity, namely papyrus, ostraka, parchment, etc. Students will learn how to decypher and edit fragments of documents and literary works, and how to extract useful information in order to start and perform a historical, palaeographical and philological research. In particular, special consideration will be given to the phenomenon of language and graphic interaction between Greek and Latin that can be found in many fragments of documents and books from the 3rd to the 6th century AD in Egypt and other eastern provinces of the Roman Empire.

The teacher will provide the students with all the needed study materials.

The course is divided into subunits, each of which dedicated to a "marginal" aspect of Greek society that will be critically analyzed. The second section of the Byzantine civilization teaching, addressed to graduate students of Classics, History and Art, aims to re-open the historical dossier on the fall/conquest of Constantinople after forty years from the premature death of the best scholar on this subject, Agostino Pertusi, trying to complete his research on unedited and edited historical sources on the event.

Firstly, this section shall try to reconstruct the different phases of the siege and of the final battle on the 29th of May 1453, in which the Osman Turks of Mehmet II Fatîh brought to an end, at least politically, the Byzantine empire and the eleventh centuries of Byzantine life.

The analysis of the events shall be done by a comparative reading and a precise exegesis of ‘official’ sources of both the sides, namely Byzantine (George Sphrantzes, Doukas, Critobulos, Laonikos Calcondilas) and western sources (Isidore of Kiev, Leonard of Chios, Niccolò Barbaro) but also islamic ones, particularly those of the Ottoman Chroniclers of the cohort of Mehmet II (Tursun Beg e Ibn Kemâl).

To this first group of sources, which, although they are known to the historians, could yet still be given other interpretations, we shall add the exploration of less known attestations, which are either partially edited or still unedited. These attestations are actually memorials of different sort that various observers from different lineage and nations wrote, to be used by powerful people of whom they were or could be considered emissaries: the so-called ‘spies’voices’ that are yet to be considered in the historical evaluation of the battle of the 29th of May 1453.

This course is an introduction to the Pragmatics of Interaction. After a presentation of the theories and disciplines that have contributed to the development of the models of interaction, we will focus on the approach of Conversation Analysis and Interactional Linguistics, by discussing in detail their theoretical and methodological principles. The main features of interaction (e.g., turn-taking organisation, sequential organisation, repair phenomena) will be studied and authentic data, represented by audiovisual recordings and transcripts of conversational and institutional exchanges, will be analysed. Particular attention will be paid to methodological issues related to data collection and processing.

This section of the Byzantine Civilization teaching, addressed to graduate students of History and Art, Archaeology, and Religious Sciences, aims to investigate the reasons behind the fall of Constantinople and the way in which it fell in the hands of the Osman Turks, along with the direct and indirect consequences brought by this fall to the history of the Mediterranean civilization.
Firstly, this module shall deal with a topographical investigation of Constantinople, based on literary and figurative attestations that Byzantine writers and especially foreign travellers of the 14th and the 15th century offer on the city’s monuments, neighborhoods’ organizations and location and on the defensive structure, which includes but it is not limited to the great Theodosian walls.
Secondly, it shall reconstruct the final phases of the siege as well as the final battle. “Aristocracy by birth, aristocracy by service. The inscriptions of the praetorian prefects of the 4th century”.
The praetorian prefecture was reformed by Constantine the sole Augustus between 326 and 328 AD. The transformation of the office from a role dangerously close to the Augusti to the top of the diocesan and provincial administration, definitively distant from the person of the emperor, explains the evolution of the typology of epigraphic messages relating to the late antique praetorian prefects. The new institutional status of the office in the 4th century had important epigraphic reflections on the typology and preservation of the inscribed monuments erected in honour of the prefects and commissioned by the prefects themselves. It is possible to reflect on the consistency and representativeness of this surviving epigraphic materials.The student is asked to reconstruct the historical context of the careers of the prefects, to formulate hypotheses on the paths of realization and preservation of the inscribed monuments, as well as to outline the social profile of this aristocracy at the top of the late Roman Empire: the aristocracy by birth, and the aristocracy of individuals ascended for their meritorious service.

"Philosophers and poets, that is: on Cavalcanti and Dante"

The course will take into account a foundational relationship in early Italian lyric: the one between Dante and his "first friend" Guido Cavalcanti. The brief collection of rhymes by Cavalcanti will be read in its entirety, alongside the most important and audacious work of the young Dante, his "Vita nova". Moreover, some passages from his "De vulgari eloquentia" and the "Commedia" will be read, where it is possible to trace echoes of the dialogue with his old friend. Specific attention will be devoted to the philosophical content and the intellectualistic character of their poetry, to their different ideas about love and intellectual happiness, and to the reception of their figures among readers.

The history of our language can also be read and studied using dictionaries which have described and codified it. The module focuses on the diachronic and synchronic study of the Italian lexicon through lexicography. After having clarified the basic terms of the discipline, we will retrace the history of dictionaries in Italy, from its origins to the present day; typologies and compositional structures of some important dictionaries will be examined.

LANDSCAPE ARCHEOLOGY: between collective MEMORY, COMMUNITY and PROJECT. Landscape archaeology approaches the communities and the history of their territories, and it contributes to the definition of criteria for sustainable development. Various case studies will be examined relating to more or less successful experiments of integration of archaeological and historical landscape studies with the design and planning of contemporary landscape contexts. The legislative stages of the regulations on the protection of territorial contexts will be retraced, up to the Faro Convention (2005), its implications and its recent implementation in Italy. Guidelines will be drawn up for the application of forms and initiatives of public archaeology, on the basis of solid 'participatory' and shared research paths. Particular attention will be given to the dynamics of perception of the historical memory of the territories, to forms of active protection of the contemporary landscape (as a product of diachronic interactions between man and environment), to the public dimension of research on the cultural values of a landscape.

The course provides the necessary skills to study all the fragmentary written materials from Antiquity, namely papyrus, ostraka, parchment, etc. Students will learn how to decypher and edit fragments of documents and literary works, and how to extract useful information in order to start and perform a historical, palaeographical and philological research. In particular, special consideration will be given to the phenomenon of language and graphic interaction between Greek and Latin that can be found in many fragments of documents and books from the 3rd to the 6th century AD in Egypt and other eastern provinces of the Roman Empire.

The teacher will provide the students with all the needed study materials.

DESCRIZIONE

● Il corso ha impostazione seminariale ed è finalizzato all’acquisizione di una corretta metodologia della ricerca storica. Esso presuppone inoltre il possesso e la riattivazione di una gamma assai diversificata di conoscenze pregresse in campo antichistico più ampio, necessarie per l’applicazione dei metodi di analisi propri dei diversi tipi di fonti.
● Metodi didattici. Si provvederà in primo luogo a recuperare mediante lessici e repertori enciclopedici le informazioni principali sul “cataclisma” di Elice: un eccezionale e complesso parossismo (terremoto, maremoto, improvvisa subsidenza, imponenti frane) che nel 373/2 a.C. determinò la completa scomparsa di questa antica città costiera dell’Acaia peloponnesiaca (insieme con la vicina Bura). Prospezioni sulle coste dell’Acaia e sondaggi sottomarini nel tratto prospiciente del Golfo di Corinto, avviati a partire dal 1988, e poi saggi di scavo a cura della Helike Foundation nel decennio successivo, hanno portato nel 2001 alla sorprendente individuazione sulla terraferma – e non sui fondali del golfo – del sito della città, che le fonti antiche dicevano invece “inabissata”. Le regolari campagne di scavo succedutesi negli ultimi venti anni si prospettano oggi come un inedito “laboratorio sul campo”, in cui la concreta realtà “fisica” di un evento si presta ad essere incrociata e raffrontata con le corrispondenti narrazioni storiche, mettendo in luce in particolare – in queste ultime – il tasso di deformazione, trasfigurazione o vera e propria affabulazione mitizzante dei “fatti”. Questo processo di amplificazione è approdato, nel caso in specie, ad una sorta di versione “in sedicesimo” del mito platonico di Atlantide (un topos che ha finito per ispirare di riflesso persino i moduli rappresentativi del sito Ruins of Helike nel contesto del noto videogioco Assassin's Creed: Odyssey).

The course aims to address the study of the characteristics of Latin and Greek manuscripts, with particular regard to their value for philological and historical-cultural studies. In this regard, both the external characteristics of manuscripts will be examined (material techniques for the preparation of the book as a physical object, methods and tools for its preparation, with regard to the professional figures involved in the production process), and the cultural panorama of the times and places of origin of manuscript books. Therefore, each aspect will be illustrated by choosing a reference manuscript witness.
This course will include both the examination of reproductions of manuscripts, in paper and electronic format, and the direct examination of manuscripts and writing materials, through visits to archives and libraries.

The final exam will include the knowledge of the material provided during lessons and the discussion of one subject which the student will decide to study in depth. In addition students are required to study the following texts:

- Students will also read two classics of Italian literature, with appropriate critical comments, which will be indicated during the course. Further information on the texts to be prepared will be provided during the lessons.

The course will reconstruct the historical evolution of cartography, retracing the modes of representation from antiquity to the eighteenth-century geodetic revolution, up to the creation of the Military Geographic Institute. Particular emphasis will be given to the deconstruction of geocartographic materials, to their use in geo-historical research for the study of landscape transformations.

This module will provide an interpretation of the crisis of the Roman Republic. Students will read some of the major ancient sources relating to this period (Plutarch, Sallustius and so on). They will be introduced to the figure of Mario and the way in which he came into conflict with Lucio Cornelio Silla, a Roman "warlord", who after victories in the East eventually marched on Rome in 82 and assumed the office of dictator.

TITLE OF THE COURSE: The pseudo-Augustinian treatise De spiritu et anima (late 12th-early 13th century).

DESCRIPTION: First of all, the course intends to outline, in broad terms, the developments of a theme - that of the soul - dear to the tradition of Western thought since its beginnings, and capable, in addition to incessantly nourishing high-level philosophical and religious reflection, also to have a singular impact on mentalities, on the imaginary, on life conduct, on the self-perception and representation of man in Western culture, and in particular in the Latin Middle Ages. A work will then be analyzed - the De spiritu et anima - of uncertain attribution, datable between the end of the 12th and the beginning of the 13th century, which enjoyed great success in the Middle Ages, and which - due to its eclectic character, but not lacking of originality - is well suited to provide a complex and problematic status quaestionis on the subject, before the most complete elaborations of Scholasticism. - As part of the module will also be activated exercises designed to guide the knowledge and use of the main electronic resources for the study and research on the Latin authors of the Middle Ages.

The course provides the necessary skills to study all the fragmentary written materials from Antiquity, namely papyrus, ostraka, parchment, etc. Students will learn how to decypher and edit fragments of documents and literary works, and how to extract useful information in order to start and perform a historical, palaeographical and philological research. In particular, special consideration will be given to the phenomenon of language and graphic interaction between Greek and Latin that can be found in many fragments of documents and books from the 3rd to the 6th century AD in Egypt and other eastern provinces of the Roman Empire.

The teacher will provide the students with all the needed study materials.

Early Christian sexual ethics

During the first centuries, Christians elaborated their own sexual ethics, which can be understood only if framed within a broader scenario that includes Greco-Roman philosophical and literary reflection and the Jewish heritage.
The course, through the reading of primary sources and the survey of some significant scholarly approaches to the topic, seeks to explore the main ideas of eros, sexuality and sensuality current in the ancient Christian world and their reflections in the social, cultural and political spheres. In particular, debates about the best form of life - between virginity and marriage -, encratite conceptions, the emergence of a Christian marriage ethic, the condemnation of adultery, and the issue of homosexuality will be considered.

"Philosophers and poets, that is: on Cavalcanti and Dante"

The course will take into account a foundational relationship in early Italian lyric: the one between Dante and his "first friend" Guido Cavalcanti. The brief collection of rhymes by Cavalcanti will be read in its entirety, alongside the most important and audacious work of the young Dante, his "Vita nova". Moreover, some passages from his "De vulgari eloquentia" and the "Commedia" will be read, where it is possible to trace echoes of the dialogue with his old friend. Specific attention will be devoted to the philosophical content and the intellectualistic character of their poetry, to their different ideas about love and intellectual happiness, and to the reception of their figures among readers.
