3rd yr 6 ECTS LLE and OCI curriculum Cross-linguistic comparative analysis: Typology and levels of analysis; interaction between different levels of grammar (phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics). Identification of universal principles of language and their different realizations in typologically different languages. Critical reflection on data and on theoretical hypotheses.
Diachronic linguistics: history of comparative linguistics, comparative method, indo-europeistic reconstruction (phonetics, morphology), comparison between genetic, areal and typological classification; linguistic change (at different levels), its motivations and diffusion.

The aim of this course is to provide students with the fundamentals of diachronic linguistics. In particular, the course will deal with the following three topics: (1) Basic knowledge of the history of comparative and historical linguistics. (2) Learning the comparative method (reconstruction of the Indo-European phonological system) and the most important phonetic laws; analysis of some topics of the Indo-European morphophonology; comparison among genealogical, typological, and areal classification of languages. (3) Analysis of the linguistic change, at phonetic, phonological, morphological, syntactic, and semantic level. Learning the reasons of linguistic change, and its spread in space and society.

Reading the Bible in Medieval England: The Fall od Adam and Eve The course aims at giving students the ability to translate and discuss critically Old English texts and to relate them to their cultural and linguistic context. Passages from prose and poetic texts rendering the Bible into the vernacular will be analyzed considering the main features of Old English literature: style, symbolism, peculiarities of poetic language, of manuscript transmission and of the unity of word and image. Relationships between insular and continental texts will be considered.

The main objectives of the course are to consolidate students’ previous knowledge and to develop their linguistic competences (lexical, phonological, syntactical) according to the CEFR levels (B2+/C1). The metalinguistic description, both from a synchronic and a diachronic perspective, will be conducted using authentic materials and translating different types of texts, with a special emphasis on language varieties and languages for specific purposes. A part of the course will be devoted to a reflection on specific problems of translation from/to French, supported by the study of theoretical and methodological issues related to linguistic translation and cultural mediation.

Language and cultural mediation
Starting from a contrastive point of view, we will compare the German and the Italian language in some specific linguistic structures and we will focus on practical language mediation. In particular we will concentrate on the mediation of all sorts of different texts, both oral and written, including videos, songs, newspaper articles and scientific texts. We will also study some aspects of cultural mediation, mainly stereotypes, how to analyze them scientifically and how to handle them in everyday life. Due to students' particular desire, we will also offer a short look on translation with same practical examples and exercises.

Starting from a contrastive point of view, we will compare the German and the Italian language in some specific linguistic structures and we will focus on practical language mediation. In particular we will concentrate on the mediation of all sorts of different texts, both oral and written, including videos, songs, newspaper articles and scientific texts. We will also study some aspects of cultural mediation, mainly stereotypes, how to analyze them scientifically and how to handle them in everyday life. Due to students' particular desire, we will also offer a short look on translation with same practical examples and exercises.

Through the reading of a selection of novels written between the 1830's and the present, the course will explore the many ways in which Anglophone culture has given expression to the European Bildungsroman. With the aid of critical and anthropological theorization, and of feminist studies, the course will investigate four "coming of age" novels and the different ways in which their authors have represented the crucial passage from childhood or adolescence to adult life. Within the course we will watch a selection of film adaptations of some of the novels considered and will investigate what happens to a story when it travels across media.

The course will offer an historical and literary overview of the Long Eighteenth Century in which the most important cultural trends of the Restoration, the Enlightenment and Romanticism will be highlighted through the analysis of a number of meanignful texts by different authors and genres (prose, poetry, drama). Topics like the re-use of classical texts, literary sociability, the interart relations, the birth of the novel, the periods of Romantic poetry will be discussed through the reading of classics.
The course is delivered in Italian; texts will have to be read in the original (English) with the help of Italian translations. There will be lectures and workshops with an intermedial and comparative approach to texts in order to develop reading and rewriting techniques.
