BURRASCANO MARCO
(syllabus)
The course is aimed at students in the first year of the master's degree in restoration. We will work on the role of the contemporary architecture in the reconstruction of identities in the earthquake zones. The course aims to stimulate a reflection on the relationship between contemporary architecture and historical heritage, through a series of lectures by professors of the Department of Architecture, the study of examples of contemporary buildings and a series of reviews on the analysis and project.
(reference books)
The educational aim concern the design of a poli-functional building in an historical context, respecting the typological, spatial and material traits. The course proposes to define, through the architectural project, a clear settlement principle in relation to the surrounding urban fabric and to the landscape in which it is located, not only with respect to the functional program. Particular attention is paid to the architectural definition of the spaces in relation to the ways of living and to the building systems: masonry, concrete, steel and wood. The project area is located in Borbona, in the province of Rieti. Within the spaces of the former Convento di Sant'Anna, it is necessary to think of: a polifunctional space that can also be used as a temporary school on “natural agriculture”; a little market of typical food; a restaurant and a small guesthouse. It also requires a reflection on the public space in front of the convent. Manuali

MURRO ROCCO
(syllabus)
The aim of the teaching is to take the economic evaluation as a logical and methodological aid to design choices and as an active component in the construction of the restoration project. The aim is to provide the fundamental elements for the evaluation, seen as a contribution to the construction of the preferable solution with respect to the context and to prefigured feasibility requirements.
(reference books)
The lessons will deal with the following issues: 1. Estimation procedures and restoration costs analysis. After some considerations on nature, classification and variability of restoration costs, the synthetic, analytical and intermediate estimation procedures are illustrated, highlighting some critical and problematic aspects existing in the different phases and design scales. In the context of the analytical cost estimate, a specific study concerns the formation of new prices even in cases of traditional building techniques. 2. Evaluation methods and techniques for projects, plans and programs. The following topics are addressed: * investment analysis, aimed at controlling the cost-revenue ratio that the project is able to develop over time; * economic evaluation, aimed at examining utility and disutility that the project is able to provide to the community as a whole; * multidimensional social evaluations, to extend the economic-financial evaluation of the project to other dimensions (historical, aesthetic-cultural, environmental, technical, social, procedural, etc.) in order to support design choices with a wider spectrum of information broad and above all, more suited to the complexity of current phenomena. The teaching is structured through theoretical lessons and exercises, concerning the valuation of the costs of the restoration. Miccoli S., “La valutazione nel progetto di restauro”, in G. Carbonara (diretto da), “Trattato di restauro architettonico”, UTET, Torino, 1996.

PUGLIANO ANTONIO
(syllabus)
The didactic activity of the Restoration Laboratory Course will provide to every student the operative fundamentals (cognitive, critical and technical) addressed to the knowledge of the method of an architectonic Restoration project: for every case of study, such method will be also experienced by the student, by personally drawing, under the guidance of tutors, a restoration project concerning ancient, medieval or modern prominent building or urban sites. For this purpose, every project will be instructed by deepening both requested historical and analytical aspects to the extent of the detailed working drawing. Furthermore, the didactic activity will be structured in modules aimed at contributing to the projects by both producing specific didactic materials and organizing practical guided activities as far as survey drawings and appropriate installation approaches to every case of study will be concerned.

STABILE FRANCESCA ROMANA
(syllabus)
Architectural regionalism.
(reference books)
From Modernism to the revival of Medieval architecture: history, studies and projects. Gustavo Giovannoni: urban restoration and decentralization of the residential neighbourhoods. It is possible to compare Giovannoni’s thoughts and interventions in the architectural field to interpret various aspects of his ideology on the ideal purpose and physical structure of the city. The debate on the “ambientismo” – fuelled by architects and honorary fellows, led by Giovannoni and the Associazione Artistica fra i Cultori di Architettura – recognise the historical architecture, as well as the picturesque feeling inherent the historical urban pattern, as a possible model both to thin out the urban pattern for a healthiness reason and to decentralize new residential districts. Therefore, the “ambientista” approach is clearly influenced by the urban principles of Camillo Sitte, Charles Buls and Joseph Stübben and by the idea of garden city of Ebenezer Howard and Raymond Unwin. Hence, between the 1910s and the 1920s, the ambientismo became the core principle of the urban and architectural project, identifying and reinterpreting the artistic and environmental features typical of each country, while considering the instances of modern building. It is possible to find this cultural orientation in various projects in Rome, such as San Saba, Aniene’s garden city in Montesacro, Ostia Nuova, the garden neighbourhood of Garbatella; all these projects were planned following Giovannoni’s theories and taking care of the relationship between “Vecchie città ed edilizia nuova”. - P. PALLOTTINO ELISABETTA
(syllabus)
The course aims to accompany students in the final critical reflection on the different educational experiences in the three and two academic years in the restoration field. To this end, culture of architectural heritage themes, that already have been addressed during the studies (conservation, restoration and reconstruction in archaeology (era corretto anche come lo aveva scritto lei: gli inglesi però lo scrivono così), monumental, urban and architectural contexts regionalist) are subject of analysis. Also, during the semester, the students are offered a possible confrontation with the theoretical research on architectural design in the sub-class of Architectural and urban design. Lectures and design exercises are carried out with the support of specialized external collaborations (officials of public institutions, businesses and restorers).

BECCU MICHELE
(syllabus)
The course entitled ‘Theories of Architectural Research’ intends to place itself within the teaching lines and research of the Architecture Department and its educational offer, and in direct connection with the cultural setting and the ideal inspirations of the Research Doctorate “Architecture: Heritage and Innovation”.
(reference books)
Particular attention will be placed on the issues of the built, archaeological and artistic heritage that cannot be conserved, maintained or innovated without a strong theoretical and critical awareness, as can be seen in the tradition of Italian and European architectural culture. With the Course of ‘Theories of Architectural Research’ we intend to supply architecture students with a contribution in this direction, that is with the knowledge that Theory is a fundamental and autonomous part of the Architectural Discipline, through a set of specifically chosen Theories, individual reflections, books, manuals, constructed and paper projects. The Theory of Architecture is neither a “how to” guide nor a justification that follows the establishment of an architecture, but rather a stand-alone instance of architectural thought. The theory of architecture is therefore closely linked to the practice of architectural design and research. -H.W.
