"Aristocratic model, productive sectors and constraints of social representation"

The rich epigraphic heritage of the city of Rome, and of other cities of the Latin West, allows us to examine the paths of self-representation, in life and in death, of the different, stratified, heterogeneous components of a multiform urban society. In the universe of production workers, different in origin, age, category and social weight, illustrates by means of latin inscriptions the attraction of the aristocratic model, but also eccentric forms of exaltation of subordinate roles. A world suspended between dominant thought and eccentricity.

Students in Master's Degree courses who have not obtained any CFU in the L-ANT / 03 sector (Roman History / Latin Epigraphy), and intend to acquire 12 ECTS credits in the L-ANT / 03 sector in the Master's course alone, can support 6 CFU of Roman History in the manner indicated by prof. Marcone, and 6 CFU of Latin Epigraphy Master's Degree, for which a basic knowledge of Latin is required, according to the Latin Epigraphy program LM (with debt).

Course title (2016-2017): “Paul and Thecla: the first Christian novel”.
Adventures of the Apostle Paul and his disciple Thecla in Asia Minor are the subject of the most famous section of the Acts of Paul, section which, autonomously, enjoyed wide circulation. The two protagonists of the typical Hellenistic novel become here two tireless evangelists, and the love affair turns into a persistent desire of Paul imitation by Thecla, which undermines all social conventions and comes to shape one of the great literary heroines of antiquity.
The course aims to analyze the Acts of Paul and Thecla from historico-critical, semantic, ideological and literary perspectives, making use of the most recent scientific literature on the subject.
The course is a workshop and provides for the active participation of the students; the knowledge of the Greek language is demanded. Students who don’t know Greek or cannot attend the lessons are requested to contact the teacher.

Materials for the seminars (critical editions, scientific literature) will be furnished by the teacher.

Two bishops of the Late antiquity through their letters: Augustine of Hippo and Synesius of Cyrene

Through the analysis of some letters of Augustine and Synesius we will study the action of the two bishops which have to face the problems that trouble their community.
Special attention will be paid to the literary aspects and of textual criticism.

Epigraphy, power, society: the Senatus consultum de Cnaeo Piso patre

The discovery in 1990 in southern Spain (Betica) of the bronze tablet on which was engraved the senatusconsultum containing the full text of the judgment of the trial against the legacy of Syria Cn. Calpurnius Piso allows you to re-read one of the most dramatic events in the history of the High Empire. Around the sudden death of Germanicus Caesar, in 19 AD, we see looming tensions in the Julio-Claudian house, the fluidity of the new Augustan regime, the eminent role of the Senate, the importance of the loyalty of the legions, the obsession of the Roman people for this deceased prince, but also the harmony between Piso and his wife Plancina. A great fresco of a changing society.

TITLE OF THE COURSE: The pseudo-Augustinian treatise De spiritu et anima (late 12th-early 13th century).

DESCRIPTION: First of all, the course intends to outline, in broad terms, the developments of a theme - that of the soul - dear to the tradition of Western thought since its beginnings, and capable, in addition to incessantly nourishing high-level philosophical and religious reflection, also to have a singular impact on mentalities, on the imaginary, on life conduct, on the self-perception and representation of man in Western culture, and in particular in the Latin Middle Ages. A work will then be analyzed - the De spiritu et anima - of uncertain attribution, datable between the end of the 12th and the beginning of the 13th century, which enjoyed great success in the Middle Ages, and which - due to its eclectic character, but not lacking of originality - is well suited to provide a complex and problematic status quaestionis on the subject, before the most complete elaborations of Scholasticism. - As part of the module will also be activated exercises designed to guide the knowledge and use of the main electronic resources for the study and research on the Latin authors of the Middle Ages.

Constantinople, May 29, 1453: fall or conquest? The "clash of civilizations" that sealed the beginning of the modern era in the testimony of the sources.
There are days that can change history, dates that become a symbol, a hologram, a mantra. Think of the initials Nine Eleven, on 11 September 2002, of the fall of the Twin Towers, which gave the 21st century the seal of what is called a "clash of civilizations". Or even less chilling, but equally symbolic dates, such as those to which the birth of the modern age is usually referred: 1492, when the discovery of America projected the Europeans far from the area of irradiation of the former Roman and later Byzantine empire, that is, of what Fernand Braudel called the Greater Mediterranean, the trade routes that for centuries had fought against Genoa and Venice; or 1517, when Martin Luther posted his ninety-five theses on the portal of the church of the castle of Wittemberg. These two events are closely linked to a third party: indeed, they could be considered epiphenomena. If we wanted to indicate the date that really marks the beginning of the modern age, because it is also the cause of the other two, because it changed course to the Mediterranean trade, because it freed papacy from an antagonist – orthodoxy - and left space to the Protestant Reformation, and for a thousand other reasons, we should mention another date: that of May 29, 1453, the day of the fall - or conquest, depending on the point of view with which we want to look at it - of the Byzantine Empire, that is, ultimately, the Roman Empire. Through the reading and exegesis of the sources of both sides in the field, namely not only the Byzantine and Western, but also the Islamic ones, and in particular the Ottoman chroniclers of the court of Mehmet II, and through the analysis of facts and phenomena that preceded and determined on the one hand the Ottoman expansion towards the Mediterranean, on the other the growing isolation of the millennial "Roman" empire of Byzantium with respect to the new European powers, the course aims to induce students to develop an independent opinion, historical, methodologically founded and critically articulated, on this epochal event, which changed the history of two civilizations and which violently and powerfully inserted Islam into our European history: an event that has also acquired a new topicality in the contemporary geopolitical framework, and that is often evoked by the media, but in an almost always inexact manner, influenced by prejudice and ideological conditioning as well as, more simply, by the superficiality with which our Western historiography - almost always deprived of the tools available today of the young Byzantine discipline - wanted to simplify and disseminate it.

Catullus and the Greek culture

The course is aimed at all students wishing to gain a solid understanding, in a historical-cultural perspective, of themes and forms of Latin literature ranging from the phases immediately preceding the fall of the Western Roman Empire to the threshold of the Carolingian Renaissance, with particular reference to the culture of the so-called Roman-barbarian kingdoms. To this end, it is divided into two parts.
1) An initial cycle of lessons will offer an organic picture of authors and tendencies of Latin literary production determined by the meeting of the barbarian civilizations with Romans and Christians, between the end of the 5th century and the end of the 7th century
2) In the second part, paying attention to the aspects of form, style and metric, the course will proceed with the complete reading, interpretation and commentary of Dracontius' "Epithalamia" (Romulea 6-7).

Close reading of the "Vita nova" by Dante Alighieri.
The aim of this course is to provide students with specialised instruments for a close reading of medieval Italian texts in their linguistic and stylistic features, and with regard to critique of source, reconstruction of their cultural context, and analysis of tradition. A majority of lectures will be devoted to a close reading and commentary of Dante's text, and to the analysis of its main interpretative problems. Attention will be paid to the reception of this text and to its manuscript tradition.

Italian Renaissance literature. Love treatises between two centuries: from Ficino to Bembo. The course intends to examine in depth the themes at the center of the interest of amorous treatise between the last years of the fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries, which saw the publication of the Commentarium in Convivium Platonis de Amore (1484) by Ficino and the composition and publication of the Asolani di Bembo (1497-1505). A comparison between the two texts and a close analysis of the latter and its stylistic, formal and philosophical assumptions will be proposed.
