Starting from the formation of the new Italian State and arriving to the second half of the twentieth century, the course will follow the development of Italian literary history, with regard to both poetry and novel.Each of the considered authors will be studied in his hitorical and geographical context and some samples of his main works will be read and critically analysed during the lessons. Part of the course will be dedicated to the analysis of poetical works, especially by Carducci, D'annunzio and Pascoli.

Bibliography: For the study of Italian literature from 1861 to the Seventies of the Nineteenth century student can use an handbook of Italian Literature (for example Giulio Ferroni, Storia della letteratura Italiana, Dall’Ottocento al Novecento e Il Novecento e il nuovo millennio, Mondadori Università). As the novel is concerned, beside the general cultural and literary movements the students are required to have a deep knowledge of the following authors Carducci, Nievo, Verga, Capuana, De Roberto, Fogazzaro, Deledda, Serao, D’Annunzio, Pirandello, Tozzi, Svevo, Palazzeschi, Gadda, Moravia, Flaiano, Pavese, Vittorini, Fenoglio, Calvino, Pratolini, Tomasi di Lampedusa, Bassani, Cassola, Pasolini, Sciascia, Primo Levi, Elsa Morante, Anna Maria Ortese. A good knowledge of the Twentieth century novel is required, with special regard of the following authors: Pascoli, D’Annunzio, Gozzano, Marinetti, Palazzeschi, Campana, Saba, Ungaretti, Montale, Quasimodo, Luzi, Caproni, Penna, Bertolucci, Sereni, Pavese, Pasolini, Rosselli.

The course aims to introduce students into Spanish Phonetics, Ortography, Morfology and Sintaxt from contrastive approach (Spanish/Italian), and it gives a survey of the main theoretical approaches to translation. Il corso si propone di esplorare le manifestazioni e le manipolazioni del tragico nella tradizione spagnola del teatro aureo e degli anni ’20 e ’30 del Novecento, attraverso una lettura critica di alcuni testi rappresentativi. Through the reading of a selection of novels written between the 1830's and the present, the course will explore the many ways in which Anglophone culture has given expression to the European Bildungsroman. With the aid of critical and anthropological theorization, and of feminist studies, the course will investigate four "coming of age" novels and the different ways in which their authors have represented the crucial passage from childhood or adolescence to adult life. Within the course we will watch a selection of film adaptations of some of the novels considered and will investigate what happens to a story when it travels across mediums.

The Jazz Age
The aim of this course is to acquaint students with the basic tools needed to critically address an American literary text and familiarize them with major theoretical schools originating in the USA. This year I will offer a fine-grained analysis of the literature of the Jazz Age. In particular, I will address the latest approaches in Modernism scholarship to single out the experimental quality of the Jazz Age's prose styles. Together we will discuss the most representative authors, their interest in the language of film and photography, and their bold assimilation of the black musical tradition. A special emphasis will be given to the ways in which contemporary authors such as Toni Morrison or Woody Allen incorporated the Jazz Age in their works.

Therefore a visive knowledge of paintings and sculptures is strictly requested.The course will begin with some general lectures about artistic movements and different approaches to history of art. Students are kindly requested to have taken History of Medieval Art exam before attending the course.Studying the manual is just the first step of preparing for the exam. The knowledge of the complete work of the most important artists is also requested and therefore it’s very important to use the website to get in touch with the whole ouvre of artists (I suggest www.wga.hu). Maestri del Colore or Classici dell’arte Rizzoli can be useful as well. During the course some subjects will be developed and it’s very important to learn them through the slides which can be found at Ufficio Informatica at the end of the course. But the most important way of learning visual art is to get in real touch with the works of art visiting them. Therefore there’s a list of monuments in Rome to be visited before the exam.Students attending the course can take a written exam at mid term and at the end of the term. These two written exams will be part of the final one.Bibliography for attending and non attending students is the same. The least absolutely need to get through the course’s slides which can be found at the office of Collegio Didattico Beni Culturali.

ITALIAN CINEMA FROM NEO-REALISM TO COMEDY ITALIAN STYLE Program: The first part is dedicated to the most emblematic theories, films, authors, figures and styles of post-war cinema. The major works of Roberto Rossellini, Vittorio De Sica, Luchino Visconti, Giuseppe De Santis, Pietro Germi are analyzed. Particular emphasis is given to the thought and practices of Cesare Zavattini. In the second part, the comedy is tackled through a multiplicity of points of view concerning the genre status, the narrative models, the types of characters, the divistic icons, the styles, the ways of production and reception. The most significant films of Dino Risi, Mario Monicelli, Luigi Comencini, Pietro Germi and Antonio Pietrangeli are analyzed. We trace the contemporary debate and subsequent reflections in historical-critical and theoretical fields.

This course explores (first part) the basic concepts of cultural anthropology and ethnography (culture / s, ethnicity / ethnic groups, cultural relativism / ethnocentrism, racisms, globalization). The ethnographic method will be analyzed from participant observation up to multi-location and multi-vocal research). In this direction the course (second part) studies the anthropology of migrations also focusing on gender and feminist ethnography. The third part of the course examine the concepts relating to the sociocultural representations and uses of bodies in the local dimension and in the global ecumene (body techniques, habitus, incorporation). Therefore, some ethnographic cases will analyze, focusing on the bio-political dimension and the anthropological critique of human rights.The project https://mapfgm.eu will analyze as case study.

Title of the course: The structures of the contemporary Italian language and the influence of English
Description of the course: the course aims to analyse the main structure of contemporary Italian and to offer a framework of Italian phonology, morphology, syntax and lexicon, with special attention to the innovative phaenomena and the linguistic changes in progress. the course will also propose a detailed study of the main notions of textual linguistics. The acquired abilities will be applied directly to the analysis of written and spoken tesxts (belonging to different typologies), consideredn in their morphological, lexical, sintactical and textual aspects.

The course aims to offer a global vision of the historical development of European Theatre, through a series of close ups on themes and changes of its values and conditions, from Mediaeval culture to contemporary performance. The notion of cultural performance will be assumed as a key concept, in order to enlarge the horizon of the artistic and cultural values of theatre to other fields and practices of representation (Dance, ritual, celebration). In its first part, the course deals with texts and contexts of books considered as groundbreaking sources for the theory and practice of the Western performer in 20th century (Artaud, Brecht, Grotowski). In the second period, through the reading of Shakespeare's Hamlet, a focus will concern the dramatic tradition in European modern theatre. In the final period, taking part in meeting and panels with operators, curators and performers, the students will share ongoing projects and current trends in Italian contemporary theatre

English speaking students can replace the Italian edition of Hamlet with W. Shakespeare, Hamlet, ed. by H. Jenkins, The Arden Shakespeare. English speaking students are also allowed to study the English translations of the books by Brecht, Artaud and Grotowski.
