INTERNET HISTORY AS A CULTURAL ARTIFACT INTERNET HISTORY IS ONE OF THE MOST STUDIED ISSUES OF THE HISTORY OF TECHNOLOGY. THE COURSE'S AIM IS TO ANALYZE THE HISTORY FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF ITS SOCIAL AND CULTURAL MEANING. COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGIES ARE NOT ONLY TOOLS FOR COMMUNICATION, BUT MAINLY DEVICES WHICH MODIFY THE RELATIONSHIPS OF THE PEOPLE WHO USE THEM. THE CULTURAL ARTIFACT CHARACTER OF THE NETWORK AND OF ITS SERVICES, HAS NOT YET BEEN DEEPENED IN THE LITERATURE ON THE SUBJECT. IN THIS COURSE WE WILL LOOK AT THE HISTORY OF THE NETWORK FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF THE TRANSFORMATION POWER IT DEVELOPED IN THE REARRANGEMENT OF THE COMMUNICATION SYSTEM BETWEEN HUMAN BEINGS, AT LEAST IN THE RICHEST PART OF THE WORLD IN WHICH ACCESS TO THE NETWORK IS GUARANTEED FROM SOCIO-POLITICAL CONDITIONS. The course treats the issue of linguistic pathologies with a particular focus on deficits involving the discursive level of communication. The main goal is to show how language deficits represent a key to highlight to the essential characteristics of human communication. Among the cases examined, autism, schizophrenia, head trauma and aphasia will be deeply discussed.

The course is an introduction to the philosophy of mind informed by cognitive sciences. Cognitive science investigates complex organisms at the information-processing level of analysis, and it can be defined a peculiar level in the sense that it is suspended between two worlds. On the one hand, there is the ordinary image of ourselves as persons, namely as self-conscious, intentional, rational agents. On the other hand, we have the sub-personal sphere of the cerebral events, as investigated by neuroscience. Therefore, one of the main tasks for the philosopher of psychology is to unravel this peculiarity, trying to shed some light upon the relations between these different ways of describing ourselves. This course critically explores some classical attempts to accomplish this task.

Main features of specialised English texts - written and spoken - used in international and intercultural communication in plurilingual contexts, in standard English and in English as a Lingua Franca. Analysis of forms, functons, syntactic, semantic and pragmatic aspects of specialised discourse (journalistic, tourist, socio-political,institutional) of various genre and register. Theory and practice of mediation ad translation. Use of dictionaries and corpora. Lessons will be alternated with workshops aimed at the analysis, creation and translation of documents and at the development of micro-projects. Course title: "Contrastive linguistics, mediation and translation Italian-German" The course focuses, on one side, on specific phenomena of the German language which are interesting from a contrastive point of view and which causes often interferences and errors in second language learning and interlingual mediation and translation. On the other side we will do concrete exercises in mediation and translation Italian-German and reflect about specific linguistic phenomena. We will emphasise also the use of dictionaries.
N.B. This course is also recommended for students of the European Master in Lexicography.

Course title: "Contrastive linguistics, mediation and translation Italian-German" The course focuses, on one side, on specific phenomena of the German language which are interesting from a contrastive point of view and which causes often interferences and errors in second language learning and interlingual mediation and translation. On the other side we will do concrete exercises in mediation and translation Italian-German and reflect about specific linguistic phenomena. We will emphasise also the use of dictionaries.

In recent decades, the theme of local development has assumed a central role in the development debate. The lessons will present the concepts and methods of local development, understood not only as a growth process for an aggregation of local companies, but as a diversified territorial development process based on self-organizing capacity of local networks of actors and on the sustainable exploitation of tangible and intangible resources available in a certain territory, including the social and cultural spheres. The high expectations of the early days on the potential of local development has recently been followed by a less optimistic phase. Today's challenge is to avoid the trap of localism and rethink local development even in new terms, to give cities and territories the ability to respond to economic, social and environmental pressures of the globalized world. Some case studies in Italy not only will help to deepen some of the addressed issues. There will be lectures, eventual seminars and an educational excursion.

In the first part of the course, origins and history of advertising will be illustrated, along with the organization of advertising industry and its main professional figures; drawing on many case studies, different advertising techniques and strategies will be presented, showing how these change according to different media (printed ads, TV commercials, web ads, etc. will be taken into consideration). Finally, theoretical frameworks will be discussed and applied to specific advertisements. The second part of the course focuses on what is probably to be considered advertising’s main ‘resource’ and most longstanding weakness at the same time: the use of stereotypes. After addressing stereotypes in theoretical terms and explaining the reasons for their widespread use and ‘efficacy’, we will focus on three categories of stereotypes commonly found in advertisements: 1) gender and ‘heteronormativity’ (how are female and male subjects and bodies depicted in ads? What are the reasons for and the effects of privileging heterosexual couples?); 2) age (which products/services/goods is the use of elderly in advertising limited to? Are old women and old men ‘used’ in the same way?); 3) race (in which roles non-Caucasian people feature in in advertising images and discourse?). Several forms of communication will be deconstructed and re-constructed in order to challenge common places and to analyze how (hetero)sexism, racism, and ageism work in advertising.

The course will present an overview of the theatrical genres of the Siglo de Oro dramatic production for commercial theaters and religious festivities. We will analyze some important texts from different points of view: formal, structural, historic and cultural, anthropological. Basic information about criticism on this issue will be provided. The course will be carried out entirely in Spanish.
Foreign students may take the final exam in spanish, subject to professor’s agreement.
We strongly recommend to reserve titles (syllabus item: “texts”) at the bookshops BEFORE the beginning of the lessons. We will read and comment on texts during the lessons, so it’s essential for the students to get them in time. Attendance, although not compulsory, is strongly recommended. ( syllabus)
The main aim of the course is to engage in a detailed study of modernism, paying particular attention to Irish modernism and to a number of signficant Irish modernist writers. The first decades of the twentieth century saw great changes in many fields. The hugh technological advances that marked the start of the century and the dramatic realities of the First World War changed the world and the perception of the world. The modernists felt the need to engage in a thorough overhaul of the means of literary expression in order to find a way to give adequate expression to the new modern world in which they lived. They questioned and challenged the traditions of the past and subjected them to new literary treatments. This process was further complicated in Ireland because it was closely linked to the effort to use culture to create a new definition of Irishness within the country’s complex political context of decolonization.

The course will introduce to the emerging, in the latin Middle Ages, of the ethical and aesthetic values of courtesy. Therefore it will offer a detailed analysis of some representative novels and epical and lyrical romance texts, also considering their fortune in Italian medieval poetry and in the works of Dante and Petrarch.

Obtaining a solid preparation in the field of the history of the medieval languages and literatures as well as with regard to their transition towards the early modern period.

( syllabus)
The theme of exile in medieval English and German literary texts.
The aim of the course is to investigate how medieval authors represented and reflected upon the theme of exile. Literary texts belonging to different genres (elegies, heroic poems, hagiographical texts, romances) will be analyzed from a historical, literary and philological perspective. Special attention will be given to the identification of sources and of the recurring motifs in descriptions of seclusion and isolation and to intertextual relations. Students will be given the opportunity to learn the main stages of the development of English and German.
Seminars, with students’ presentations of individual researches, will be held. Visits to historical libraries will be planned.
