Foreword
(reference books)
Architecture today strongly entails greater adherence of construction techniques, materials and energy consumptions to the requirements of a positive environmental plan. The definition of construction techniques in accordance with an ecological vision of architecture and space climate control techniques, contribute to the creation of a more thorough construction design methodology. In this respect, a competent use of natural resources (heating, cooling, natural lighting) is extremely significant, as well as the knowledge of environment-friendly materials and components, the definition of building enclosure (walls, windows and doors, roof systems) and quality parameters. It is therefore ethically necessary to provide building services with a reduced environmental impact. It is a design philosophy that takes into account the elements of nature, specific needs, eco-friendly artifacts and more comfortable, pleasant and less polluting cities. Topics of the lessons 1- Climate and architecture 2- Thermal comfort 3- Illuminating comfort 4- Acoustic comfort in buildings 5- Installation Technology 6- System control engineering The bibliography will be suggested during the course

The lectures are focused on basic subjects as heat transfer, psycrometrics, climatic conditions, thermal and visual comfort and on their relation with energy and environmental performance of the buildings. Heating and cooling loads. Passive (bioclimatic architecture) and active (plants, building services..) systems are also illustrated in the lessons.
(reference books)
During the course students will carry out a building analysis and project (starting on the Lab1M developed design project) focused also on the energetic behavior and performance of the building itself. They will deal with the following topics: 1. Climate condition and environmental analysis (sun, winds, sound..) and control, with reference to the designed building. Passive systems (direct solar radiation control systems, natural ventilation and passive cooling). 2. Building Envelope design, focusing on energetic behavior and thermal properties. 3. Heating and cooling loads estimation. 4. Building plants and mechanical services integration in architecture – Location and sizing. 5. HVAC systems type choice, design and distribution. 6. Solar Technologies integration in buildings for heating and electricity production. 7. Daylighting, FLD calculation. 8. Acoustics. LAB 2MB Building Physics The course allows students to develop a deeper understanding and control of the energetic behavior and performance of the building and of its components, of the building-plant system, of the occupant comfort issues (thermal, lighting, acoustical). HISTORY OF CONTEMPORARY ARCHITECTURE
(objectives)
The course examines the architecture of the twentieth century, in Europe and in the United States, highlighting the different modernity of the twentieth century: the one linked to the avant-garde but also formed by the intertwining of relationships between regional traditions and new languages. They will also analyze the reform policies of housing and urban planning and the importance of the emergence of reinforced concrete. The course also deals with the crisis of the modern movement, to mention the frontier issues of the last decade of the century.

(syllabus)
This course covers a temporal space between the last decade of XIX century and the half ninety’s of XX century and gets through the complexity of historical tangles, which carried out to the birth of the modern forms and its rise. It is considered as a wide-ranging space which comprises not only the works of the innovative architects, bound up with the avant-garde or with the great ideals (like the design of machinery or the organicism), but also the works sometimes revolutionary that refers to the vernacular tradition.
(reference books)
This course is divided into four lines: the great, general themes (the historical contest, the programmes, the ideas); the great figures of architects, the philology and constructive analysis of works (both realized and only planned) and the historiographical interpretations. A specific series of lessons will point out the intersections between art and architecture. WE SUGGEST TO CONSULT THE FOLLOWING TEXTS ABOUT THE ARCHITECTURE OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY:

(syllabus)
The training of LANDSCAPE program is divided into two parts: the first for lessons and exercises, the second for the final project.
(reference books)
Lessons will investigate the role of public spaces in contemporary urban transformations; will illustrate how to recognize and understand the urban landscape components and put forward diagnosis (inventive analysis). The typical elements of open space will be analyzed and described (by applying the method of decomposition for systems described in The Poetics of Gardens, cfr. Bibliography) in their mutual interrelations, focus on expressive, spatial and technical aspects. Exercises will regard the critic analysis of public urban open spaces, well known built projects that will be interpreted through the logic of relations and systems, with graphics, images and short texts. The second part of the course is dedicated to the final project and will be held with the procedures of the laboratory in close collaboration with the teachers of the other modules. Knowledge will be imparted through lectures on: - regeneration’s strategies of contemporary city; - description of several regeneration’s projects; - major concepts used in the analysis and understanding of the built environment (townscape analysis, morphology, uses, natural environment); - description of differents masterplans and design code. The module experiments a design’s method based on site analysis, evaluation and project referred to the local dimension. The final work, prepared in class seminars, concerns: - urban design analysis of the local context (urban pattern, open space and environmental issues, infrastructure and transport issues, community and social issues, existing community facilities, development issues/current initiative); - critical understanding of people’s diverse everyday uses, problems, link and project opportunities, site analysis summary; - strategic context framework plan and project opportunities as answer to the revealed contradictions. Students, in investigation’s group, have to produce four outlines: two concern the urban design analysis of the local context and two describe the project through the elaboration of a masterplan, the formulation of a design code and project’s vision. In the final examination each student presents an overview of the work which is followed by discussion on the issues raised. The module encourages student to develop a critical perspective on their own work. - Banerjee T., Loukaitou-Sideris T., (edit. by), (2011), Companion to Urban Design, Routledge.

Sintesi del programma
(reference books)

The lectures are focalized on the history of change and re-use that have led to the loss of original architectonic identity until its intentional “re-creation” after the second half of the eighteenth century. This new tradition and its different manifestations during the last two centuries will be analyzed: excavations, restorations, reconstructions, anastylosis and programs of valorization.
