The literary work of the art historian of the Seventieth-Century Giovan Pietro Bellory will be examined, with particular attention to the analysis given by the contemporary criticism. The knowledge of the Artistic Literature and History of the Art, from Renaissance to Nineteenth Century, is required, as the attendance to lessons as well.

Changes in settlement and rural landscape in the Middle Ages are closely related with the ways and manners communities organize their presence in the environment. Long term landscape transformations shall be examined with a diachronic approach. Particular attention shall be given to the construction of the environment and of the habitat, which is still nowadays the base of settlement.

Description of the course: The course aims to retrace Pirandello's narrative evolution, starting from his earlier novels (L'esclusa and Il turno) and the earlier tales and arriving to his latest novel, Uno nessuno e centomila and to the surrealistic writing of the Thirties. In addition the course will take into consideration some drama works, such as da Così è (se vi pare), Sei personaggi and the unfinished I giganti della montagna, which will be investigated in their original character and in their innovative dramaturgical features.

Reading Shakespeare. Questioning the materiality of texts and their dramatic composition, the course aims to analyze shakespearean plays as documents of the modern european theatre culture.

English speaking students are invited to study Shakespeare's text in The Arden Shakespeare editions.

We will study the most important poetic and novelistic experiments in early twentieth-century English-language modernism. We will focus in particular on the differences between British artists such as D. H. Lawrence, Virginia Woolf and E. M. Forster, on one hand, and the Irish and American poets as well as Joseph Conrad – an English writer but a transnational novelist.
Our purpose is not just to uncover the early signs of the dynamics that lead to a breakup of that which Antoine Compagnon has defined “le modèle de la philologie, pour laquelle l’unité langue-littérature-culture coïncide avec l’esprit d’une nation, ou d’une race”; or identify the starting point of the process which led eventually a number of non-British authors to transform what was up to that point a national literature; of even greater importance is to make students understand how much these experiments had in common with models being constructed on the Continent by those thinkers and linguists who founder literary theory, truly one of the great inventions of the 20th century.

The organization and workings of Imperial Rome. The central administration and those of the Provinces. The army’s role.

This course analyzes the masterpieces of Roman Baroque architecture from the end of the 16th century to the 17th century. In this period Rome was a leading center of the arts in Europe. Popes, cardinals, nobles, intellectuals and church officials continued to sponsor the Renaissance project of the restoration and embellishment of the city. While analyzing urbanism, architecture, sculpture and painting by some of the major artists of the period, we will consider the artistic trends that characterize the architecture of patronage in Counter-Reformation and Baroque Rome. Special attention will be given not only to the literary sources that shaped architectural theory, practice and criticism, but also to important issues such as propaganda, the viewer’s emotional engagement and the artist’s social status. You are required to read these books and use them as a reference for dates, names, and images.

Júsepe de Ribera (Játiva, 1591 – Napoli 1652) and the Caravaggio's heritage between Rome and Naples

Last studies about Caravaggio's heritage have hilighted the central role of the spanish painter Júsepe de Ribera. He arrived in Rome in 1606, aged fifteeen, and moved to Naples at the middle of the Seventeenth century where he lived then on and died. The course will focus on the artist's role in the Seventeenth century european painting from three points of view: the critical path about Ribera, completely overturned in the last fifteen years; his roman years in the context of Caravaggio's followers; the artist's most important works in Naples.
The course addresses to specialistic degree students who should know at least Caravaggio's ouvre.
Visits to roman churches and museums as well as a study tour to Naples will be considered part of the course.

"WITH THE CAMERA, IT'S ALL OR NOTHING". WALKER EVANS, CONTEMPORARY ARTIST

This seminar focuses on the achievements of Walker Evans (1903-1975) and historiographical issues related to his work. Evans, who emerged in the 1930s as one of the protagonists of documentary photography, was consecrated by the Museum of Modern Art in 1938 with the first solo exhibition the museum ever dedicated to a photographer. The book published on the occasion of the 1938 exhibition, American Photographs, a second book with James Agee in 1941 (Let Us Now Praise Famous Men), and another MoMA retrospective organized by John Szarkowski in 1971 can be seen as the three major moments of Evans' canonization as the prototypical interpreter of the American Depression and as the "father" of serious art photography in the second half of the 20th century.
The course aims at debunking the myth of Evans' canon by analyzing all the different phases of his artistic endeavor, from the late 1920s to his death in 1975. Special attention will be given to the evolution of Evans' photographic language in relation to other media and practices (literature, painting, architecture); to the different lives and discursive spaces of the photographic text (the archive, the museum, the magazine, the book); finally, to the process of critical definition and historiographical revision of photography's value as art in the postwar period, both in the US and in Europe.
Through lectures, readings, class discussions, the definition of a research project, and a final paper, students will be asked to confront the problems, methods, and products of art-historical investigation applied to the medium of contemporary photography.

Each student will deepen a historical text and will be guided in writing of a final paper. All the student's contributions will be presented and discussed at the end of the course.

Each student will receive a historic bibliographic source and a selected bibliography useful for the start of the individual research.

The theme is “Neoclassicism, terminology and methods”. A reflection on a problem which involves the European culture of the second half of the Eighteenth-Century.

Description: Foreign artists have always felt the journey to Italy as a duty.
Not even the Flemish Anton van Dyck, a pupil of Pieter Paul Rubens and internationally renowned painter from the court of Charles I Stuart, is removed from it.
His long stay in Italy, in the third decade of the seventeenth century, has as milestones Genoa, Rome and Palermo, places where he will stay longer, but will not fail to visit Venice and Turin.
The course will examine, with critical attention, above all, the stays at and the works realized in Rome and Palermo.

Five centuries from the Protestant Reform: sources and historiographical studies

In the Christianity history the Lutheran reform was an event that divides the Occidental Europe. About its motivations and its incidence on the religious, political and social future history the historians have built many interpretations, studying the abundant sources about the first period of Luther’s rebellion, but also the reactions of the Roman ecclesiastical authorities. The course will analyse several sources produced in Lutheran entourage, in the civil entourage and in the catholic ecclesiastical entourage and understand them in the light of various historiographical lectures elaborated during the centuries.
We will try to give students the ability to read and interpret critically historical essays and deepen its historiographical debates, in order to provide them with methodological expertise to independently develop their own research paths, analyzing scientifically the sources and its historiography. held methodological lessons and practical exercises of research, of discussion of the historiography and of use of tools and aids.
For attending students the teacher'll do another bibliographical notices during the lessons. It is recommended to those who have never supported an examination on the early modern history of Christianity to provide themselves with a manual.
In the academic year 2018-2019 the course will be about the History of Christianity in Modern Age.

The course – intended as a seminar – aims to investigate the multifarious aspects of early 16th-century Roman antiquarian and literary culture (by the papacy of Julius II to the sack of Rome), with particular attention to the relationship of the men of letters with the rediscovery of classical antiquity, archaeology and the arts; and to illustrate the relations maintained with Rome by the protagonists of the literature of that era: Bembo, Castiglione, Ariosto, Bibbiena, Sadoleto, Michelangelo, Cellini, Aretino, and others; the frequency is highly recommended.
