The course is an introduction to the key problems of the philosophy of science. Students will become familiar with issues concerning the nature of scientific explanation, laws of nature, the relationship between hypothesis and evidence, and the truth-content of scientific theories in light of radical scientific changes. Besides making reference to textbooks, these general topics will be presented also on the basis a direct reading of some classics of 20th century philosophy of science, thereby providing knowledge of the central themes and problems of science and the philosophy of science from both a theoretical and an historical point of view.

The course presents the various strands of the eighteenth-century reflection on the habit, focusing mainly on the doctrines of Condillac and Hume, moving from the seventeenth century premise made by authors such as Descartes and Malebranche to arrive - from the 18th to the 19th centuries - to the reflection of Maine de Biran, author of the first philosophical monograph entirely devoted to this theme. The theme addressed will be appropriately framed within the enlightenment scenario of which the main theoretical background lines will be presented together with some models of historical-philosophical interpretation.

Part 1: Some preliminary notions. Order relations and trees, inductive definitions, proofs by induction, axiom of choice and Kőnig's lemma.
Part 2: Provability and satisyability. First order formal language: alphabet, terms, formulas, sequents. Structures for first order languages: structures, terms and formulas with parameters in a structure, value of terms, formulas and sequents. The calculus of sequents for first order logic: Gentzen's LK. Derivable sequents and derivations. Correctness of the rules of LK. Canonical analysis and fundamental theorem: construction of the canonical analysis (with and without cuts) and proof of the fundamental theorem of the canonical analysis. Consequences of the fundamental theorem: completeness theorem, compactness theorem, eliminability of cuts, L"owenheim-Skolem's theorem.

In general, the course will focus on the history and philosophy of space and time, giving particular emphasis to the relationship between physical and experiential time. Within this relationship, the nature of the present moment is particularly important: while physics can safely ignore such a moment, in our experience it separates an immutable past from a future that is not conceived deterministically or fatalistically but is rather regarded as open to our free decisions. We will read excerpts of classics authors in the history of philosophy that have dealt in particular with these questions. We will introduce the student to the deep link existing between chance and irreversibility

The course aims to provide the skills required for defining communicative processes, recognising their main elements, applying the expertises acquired to the analysis of the cognitive and social aspects of public and interpersonal communication as well as at work and within the fields of education, media, politics and performing arts.

HISTORY OF PHILOSOPHY
(objectives)
The course in History of Philosophy has the following learning objectives: 1. to develop knowledge of the most important concepts and authors of modern and contemporary philosophy; 2. to promote the understanding of the historical-cultural contexts in which these concepts were formed; 3. to train to the use of methodologies of historical-philosophical analysis of the most important classics of the modern and contemporary era; 4. to develop the ability to apply methods of analysis and historical-philosophical knowledge in the research activities preceding the performance of the final exam; 5. to promote learning skills and autonomy of judgment. At the end of the course, students must be able to collect, interpret and reflect on the differences or similarities of the problems and philosophers encountered during the course, demonstrating that they have acquired a scientific attitude and have critical and self-critical ability towards the texts discussed in the course. In particular, students must learn: - ability to interpret the signs and meanings of didactic communication between teacher/student and student/student; - ability to analyse a philosophical problem from different points of view; - ability to identify contradictions in a philosophical argument; - ability to control the relevance and meaning of the characteristic elements of conceptual expositions; - ability to draw conclusions from a variety of observations and inferences. These skills are promoted during the seminar work that is an integral part of the course through writing texts and collegial debate. The seminar activity of writing and discussion in the lecture hall is also aimed at the acquisition of linguistic-communicative skills.

The course aims to examine in a historical-critical view the concepts of liberty/necessity of action, civil society/ secular power, community/morality in three eminent figures of European thought able to influence the contemporary debate on liberty and free will. The program aims to stimulate and strengthen critical thinking, the ability to argue, the skills of active citizenship In this course the student will have to develop an adequate knowledge of the notion of ‘liberty’ in the thought of Luther, Leibniz, Kant. Starting from an analysis of the texts, the students will have to recognize and illustrate the differences between these three perspectives, particularly as regards some key conceptual pairs.
