Course description: Even centuries after its first conception and overall reworking, the Orlando Furioso continues to remain a classic, as demonstrated by the celebrations for the anniversary of its first publication, in 1516. How can it become a classic and continue to stay it? What role has the force of desire and the passions that animate it played, understood both by national and international critics, especially feminists, and by the numerous reinterpretations of the poem in the contemporary age? How does the poem fit today in the complex of Ariosto's literary production, between opera and theater? The course will address reinterpretations of the poem in terms of theatrical dramaturgy, from the famous staging of Ronconi to the more recent one of the Motus, making use of critical readings, even recent, useful for a contemporary placement of Ariosto's work.
