The laboratory will develop through theoretical lectures and design experiences, the theme of new forms of housing due to the transformation of the urban society. With less and less traditional families, and more and more young couples, foreigners, students, commuters or temporary workers, cities need today new urban strategies for new lifestyles, where housing can potentially have a new central role in public associative life. The laboratory wants to give to the students the tools to face the issues related to the design of complex housing interventions made of private and public functions, that integrate diverse programs, typologies and technologies in a given urban context.

(syllabus)
The workshop aims to bring the student the problem of designing a building structure of medium size, placed in a real context. This in order to make obvious the connections that each project of architecture establishes with the physical and environmental surrounding context. This context, an area of the urban fabric of the city, close to road infrastructure systems and heterogeneous urban fabrics, for density and physical form, has to be analyzed and understood in its spatial and historical qualities. It is required the design of a building complex that contains differentiated functions: temporary and permanent residences, commercial spaces and ateliers, whose built total surface area amounts to about 7100 square meters, for a total of approximately 21850 cubic meters cubage. The complex will be designed on an area almost completely flat in the Ostiense neighborhood in Rome. In the definition of the complex designers should organize not only typological articulation, even outside areas to buildings, defining voids capable of relating the new settlement to the existing urban context. Students can insert buildings in the lot, taking up to a maximum of 40% of the surface. They will also design the Guaranteed clear areas, thinking accommodation in private and public spaces balanced and able to relate to the surrounding context. The intervention airspace will push the definition of a fairly dense whole, facilitating spatial interaction between buildings and a balanced distribution system of strictly residential areas.

VIDOTTO ANDREA
(syllabus)
Students will manage a project of an entire building -inside an urban complex- even designing some parts in details, with the aim of understanding the technological and design consequences of the definition of forms.
Architectural Design Laboratory. Third Year Students will develop a housing project on a site placed in the suburbs of Rome. Among the main issues a balanced relation with the existing context will be given great importance. The building types have to accomodate different kinds of dwellings for “people of all ages” and with various needs in terms of inner space and functional organisation. The total amount of dwellings can vary between 30 and 40 and the heights of the buildings between 3/6 storeys in a high-density housing estate. An urban plan proposal should be defined first by groups of students (6/8 each) and later developed in different architectural solutions (max 2 students). The projects will refer, in general terms, to environmental sustainable criteria, and students are free to go deeper in more specific definitions according to the focus of their architectural result. Model 1:200, renderings, drawings in different scale (1:500, 1:200, 1: 100 - for cross sections and dwelling plans) are necessary for the presentation and discussion of the final project. Practical and theorethical work will proceed toghether during the semester course.

The aim of the course is to provide all the appropriate tools for students to manage design relations between materials, building elements, working techniques, requirements and regulations involved since the concept design. All that fully aware of the strong link between typological-stylish features and technological-architectural ones of the building conceived as a whole of interrelated and organized parts, according to a systemic and performance design approach.

FINUCCI FABRIZIO
(syllabus)
In the general framework of the evaluation topics, the module aims to provide the specific theoretical and methodological tools for the real estate appraisal and the evaluation of environmental, landscape, historical and cultural resources. The main concepts of microeconomics, the basics of estimation theory and the methodological procedures for value judgments are considered basic knowledge for the understanding of the estimating values and the economic variables generated by an architectural and urban project. Criteria, procedures and appraisal's techniques are suited to different stages of the project, solving in each scale specific problems. The module also provides methods and criteria for the appraisal of the use value and the non-use value. Basics of technique and methodology for the assessment of projects, program and plans are provided, in response to specific feasibility profiles, considering the evaluation as an active, logical and methodological tool to support planning and design. Specifically, the module deals with : Basics of Microeconomic: elements of theory of value, economic goods, markets structures, market pricing, general equilibrium theory, consumer choice, production theory. Appraisal fundaments: appraisals theory, appraisal principles and methods, basics of statistics, basics of mathematical finance, market value, cost value, marriage value, development value, substitution value, use value. Basics of plans, programs and projects evaluation: financial, economic and multidimensional approaches.
