TOOLS FOR RESTORATION PROJECTS
(objectives)
Design: The goal of the course is to provide students with methods, tools and useful procedures to the knowledge and analysis of historic buildings, their physical characteristics, construction and conservation. Particular attention will be given to learning the methods of integrated survey, using traditional techniques of direct survey coordinated with 3D relief (image based and range based).
Mathematics: The course is aimed at studying and analysis of curves and surfaces in plane and in space as mathematical models of architectural elements. To learn, applying to different case studies, the differential properties of parametric curves and surfaces and their composition in a virtual model. By modelling you it is possible to process a thorough analysis of the architectural structure functional to several interventions in the field of restoration. |

In this course students gain familiarity with techniques and methods for understanding and documenting the historic-formative character of historic centres, including the various phases that have formed and transformed the urban fabric; construction types; their mutation over time; identification of “coherent” modification and distinction from incoherent or damaging changes that should be removed. Particular attention is devoted to recognising and understanding pre-modern construction techniques, architectural elements and finishes, with the intention of reusing these in contemporary architectural and urban restoration.

STABILE FRANCESCA ROMANA
(syllabus)
The course aims to accompany students in the final critical reflection on the different educational experiences in the three and two academic years in the restoration field. To this end, culture of architectural heritage themes, that already have been addressed during the studies (conservation, restoration and reconstruction in monumental, urban and architectural contexts regionalist) are subject of analysis. Also, during the semester, the students are offered a possible confrontation with the theoretical research on architectural design in the sub-class of Architectural and urban design. Lectures and design exercises are carried out with the support of specialized external collaborations (experts, officials of public institutions and restorers).

STABILE FRANCESCA ROMANA
(syllabus)
The course will focus on predominantly Roman themes, from the establishment of Roma Capitale (1871) to the 1930s. During the lectures and seminars, the role played by the Istituto per le Case Popolari in Roma (ICP) in the development of the city in the 1920s and 1930s will be explored in particular. This theme is part of the study of regionalist architecture and the recovery of the language of tradition, the only one capable of restoring architecture and historic centres to their identity. The analysis of the various topics is thus intended to contribute to reflecting on a rich heritage of building and urban culture linked to the tradition of places, in particular the role played by Gustavo Giovannoni in the relationship between "Old Town and New Buildings". The study of regionalist architecture is intended to provide an understanding of the principles and methods of different building experiences related to the project of architectural and urban restoration. Identifying the typological, stylistic and constructive characteristics of 20th century regionalist contexts allows us to understand restoration as a philological process of revealing compromised architectural identities. This process will be explored through the presentation of the figure of Paolo Marconi (1933-2013), architect-restorer, and some of his projects, including the Palladian Basilica in Vicenza, the Teatro Carignano and the Venaria Reale in Turin, the Castle of Alcamo, Palazzo Riccio in Trapani

CARERI FRANCESCO
(syllabus)
The course entitled ‘Theories of Architectural Research’ intends to place itself within the teaching lines and research of the Architecture Department and its educational offer, and in direct connection with the cultural setting and the ideal inspirations of the Research Doctorate “Architecture: Heritage and Innovation”.
(reference books)
Particular attention will be placed on the issues of the built, archaeological and artistic heritage that cannot be conserved, maintained or innovated without a strong theoretical and critical awareness, as can be seen in the tradition of Italian and European architectural culture. With the Course of ‘Theories of Architectural Research’ we intend to supply architecture students with a contribution in this direction, that is with the knowledge that Theory is a fundamental and autonomous part of the Architectural Discipline, through a set of specifically chosen Theories, individual reflections, books, manuals, constructed and paper projects. The Theory of Architecture is neither a “how to” guide nor a justification that follows the establishment of an architecture, but rather a stand-alone instance of architectural thought. a lot of information about the contents and results of course can be found in the blog: http://articiviche.blogspot.com/
