The applied physics for architecture programme focuses on accompanying the architectural design process up to the preliminary stage. The concept design will be then further developed up to the executive level inside the 2M course.

The training that will be carried out during the course and which will be subject of the final exam is scheduled as follows: 1. Analysis of external environmental characteristics (sunshine, prevailing winds, noise sources, land morphology, surrounding urban fabric, etc.) and what impact these variables have on the design of the volumes and surfaces of the envelope and on the orientation building in a site. 2. Analysis of the activities that will take place in each area of the building and identification of the optimal environmental conditions for them 3. Sizing / verification of the dimensions of the glass surfaces in 2 environments (one large space that characterizes the common areas, and a second one that represents the private space of the rooms) through the method of calculating the daylight factor 4. approximate calculation of summer and winter heat loads and ventilation requirements; verification of compliance with current regulations regarding the containment of energy consumption 5. Location and approximate sizing of the technological plants: thermal power station plant, refrigeration plant, environments containing the air treatment units 6. Passive fire prevention design: identification of escape routes, emergency exits, compartmentalization. The teaching material consists of the handouts available online, integrated on the different topics by the below listed books.

The course aims to provide fundamental skills in architectural representation within the Master's Degree in Architectural Design.

To this end, the student will have to demonstrate the ability to exploit the most appropriate representation techniques for knowledge, first, and the communication, then, of the architecture under study that must be studied and explored and then practically reproduced. The different techniques of representation will be the basis of theoretical lessons on some of the architects, and their communicative language, to then also study communication and the possible ways of graphic execution. The student will use all the concepts learned during the lessons, divided by topics, in the reproduction, at maximum expressive capacity, of the assigned exam topic. The topics covered during the lessons, to ensure a deep knowledge of the architecture will be: Analog design as an expression of an era. Techniques and graphic models throughout history. The importance of perspective representation in rationalist competitions. Analyze the communication of architectural design. The digital revolution 1.0 and 2.0 and their importance in analysis, knowledge, and three-dimensional spatial processing. The photographic representation. Techniques and tools. Photographic composition and reportage. Parametric and mathematical three-dimensional modeling applied to architectural design. Digital space, control and management of perspective views. Conceptual renderings and photorealistic renderings. Video making. Photographic postproduction of rendered images. Located in the first year of the Degree Course in Architectural Design, the course aims to

participate, through the representation of architecture and the environment to the development of following skills: • conceive and use representation as a tool for exploration, verification and communication of the project idea and its realization; • use the different techniques and the different representation tools depending on the theoretical and practical reflections on the questions raised by the architecture analyzed. General issues 1. Analysis and transcription of architectural projects of some architects, through the use of different representation techniques 2. Communication of the study process of an architectural work, in its analytical phase and of return. Specific topics In order to develop the themes indicated above, the following topics will be addressed: 1. Evolution of the project design from the art of nineteenth century construction to the period contemporary 2. decompose the architecture. The graphical analysis for the knowledge of the architectural work. 3. The declinations of the design project for architecture: techniques and graphic models in the poetics of some masters 4.Graphic techniques for the representation of the analysis and project concept 5. Digital design as a form of exploration and verification of spatial configurations in two-dimensional and three-dimensional areas 6. Perspective control and digital space 7. 3D modeling: practical theoretical concepts for a conscious use of 3d modeling programs 8. Output techniques: static rendering 9. Output techniques: dynamic rendering 10. On the design of contemporary architects and in particular the study of the graphic production of the ABDR studio in Rome The themes will be carried out through the analysis and re-design of unrealized architectural projects of the ABDR study Work phases / methods We will proceed to a first graphic analysis by hand (plastic drawings and models) to understand compositional logic, constituent elements and hypothesized spatial configurations. Then, a 3D digital model and we will proceed with the elaboration of images and animations to display the information gathered. The last phase will be dedicated to communication with video processing. The material will be indicated by the teacher during the lessons.

Located in the first year of the Degree Course in Architectural Design, the course aims to

participate, through the representation of architecture and the environment to the development of following skills: • conceive and use representation as a tool for exploration, verification and communication of the project idea and its realization; • use the different techniques and the different representation tools depending on the theoretical and practical reflections on the questions raised by the architecture analyzed. General issues 1. Analysis and transcription of architectural projects of some architects, through the use of different representation techniques 2. Communication of the study process of an architectural work, in its analytical phase and of return. Specific topics In order to develop the themes indicated above, the following topics will be addressed: 1. Evolution of the project design from the art of nineteenth century construction to the period contemporary 2. decompose the architecture. The graphical analysis for the knowledge of the architectural work. 3. The declinations of the design project for architecture: techniques and graphic models in the poetics of some masters 4.Graphic techniques for the representation of the analysis and project concept 5. Digital design as a form of exploration and verification of spatial configurations in two-dimensional and three-dimensional areas 6. Perspective control and digital space 7. 3D modeling: practical theoretical concepts for a conscious use of 3d modeling programs 8. Output techniques: static rendering 9. Output techniques: dynamic rendering 10. On the design of contemporary architects and in particular the study of the graphic production of the ABDR studio in Rome The themes will be carried out through the analysis and re-design of unrealized architectural projects of the ABDR study Work phases / methods We will proceed to a first graphic analysis by hand (plastic drawings and models) to understand compositional logic, constituent elements and hypothesized spatial configurations. Then, a 3D digital model and we will proceed with the elaboration of images and animations to display the information gathered. The last phase will be dedicated to communication with video processing. The material will be indicated by the teacher during the lessons.

The laboratory 2M is the place of the natural development of the skills acquired in previous laboratory 1M. Its objective is to achieve a product comparable to what - in the current legislation in Italy - usually is defined as the final project, through the acquisition of a design sensibility oriented towards realism and based on the close integration of the contributions of the four specialist teaching modules, which allows cross-checking to be able to produce a reasonably achievable project. The design studio’s goal is to achieve a product comparable to what the Italian legislation usually defines as “final design”. It is, in other words, to put students in conditions, starting from the needs of the construction, to manage the simultaneous presence of specialist contributions (composition, structural, regulations, technological, environmental, technical physics, economic) involved in an achievable architectural project.

The work that takes place in the applied physics for architecture module 2M, aims to bring the work done in the previous 1M Laboratory to a final design level.

In particular, the program that will be carried out during the course and which will be the subject of discussion during the final exam is structured as follows: 1. Verification of the choices defined during the course of the 1M Lab, in relation to the overall design evolution, with particular reference to the following points: 2. Sizing / verification of the dimensions of the glass surfaces in 2 environments (one, to represent the large spaces that characterize the common environments, one, the private space of the rooms) through the method of calculating the daylight factor. 3. Approximate calculation of summer and winter heat loads and ventilation requirements; verification of compliance with current regulations regarding the containment of energy consumption 4. Location and approximate dimensioning of the technological plants: thermal power plant, refrigeration plant, environments that contain the air treatment units. 5. Distribution diagram of air channels and their dimensioning limited to the critical path (longer and more articulated path) 6. It aims to verify the general assumptions and conditions of the context in which it intends to develop the project initiative. To it, then, the task of building a framework for the subsequent need for further study. The areas of the Feasibility Study will include:
• technical feasibility; • environmental compatibility; • financial sustainability; • economic and social convenience; • Risk and sensitivity analysis (possible changes); • implementation procedures.

The Course will be developed in parallel with the Urban Markets and Real Estate Operators (UMREO) Course, of which, although it is not to be considered a constraint, attendance is recommended. The context in which the costs and prices of architecture as a commodity are formed will be studied in depth during the UMREO Course. In consideration of the specificity of the Assessment Course - specialist contribution to the 2M Architectural Design Workshop- the contents can be summarized as follows. The course is structured in four main conceptual sections: the. The first section - Understanding the Project Development Process - examines the stages of the project development cycle and the roles of key players in the construction process. ii. The second section - Project Initial Costs and Cost Variation Factors - explains the main elements in estimating initial costs for a project, as well as reviewing some of the many factors that lead to changes to the original estimate. iii. The third section - Cost control methods - discusses how project cost and time control can be improved through risk management and a more realistic estimate of emergency budgets. iv. The final section - An Approach to Cost Assessment and Monitoring - provides a step-by-step guide to improving cost monitoring of architecture projects. In parallel with the in-depth analyzes related to the formation of intervention costs, useful elements will be provided to estimate the real estate value of the project. With this second family of data we will proceed with the development of the economic and financial feasibility study, verifying the plausibility and sustainability of the project in the market conditions characteristic of the time and place in which it takes place. The bibliography consists mainly of materials from Italian and international professional practice and will be distributed at the end of each lesson.

The course include the 20th century architecture in Europe and in the United States of America, highlighting the different modern tendencies: the one linked to the avant-gardes but also the one established from the intersection of relationships between regional traditions and new languages. Through descriptions of different historical and geographical contexts, a selected series of masterworks from XIX to XX Century will be discussed in terms of form, structure, functions, specifically considering how they have contributed to past and contemporary architectural debate. This path will include the "architecture parlante" by C.-N. Ledoux up to Le Corbusier, the Arts and Craft Movement and the organic approach by Frank Lloyd Wright, from the British 2ndPost-war Neoavant-gardes to the Dutch architecture of diagrams in the 1990's.

The theme of the course is the sector of East Rome, between Via Prenestina and Via Casilina, in its geographical dimension with the aim of proposing projects for the regeneration and densification of a system of nodes connected to the infrastructure network and public transport in the metropolitan area.

The Laboratory intends to insert itself with its teaching program within the urban regeneration program of Rome Tuscolana, recently launched by Roma Capitale and FS Sistemi Urbani. The redevelopment is linked from an infrastructural point of view to the development of the exchange node between rail and underground. The main objective is to transform the area by aiming at:

“URBAN DESIGN HELPING ARCHITECTURE AND VICE VERSA”

The module’s aim is to promote coherence between the architectural project and the built environment’s design. The module develops detailed design approach to the local scale. Knowledge will be imparted through lectures on: - regeneration’s strategies of contemporary city; - description of several regeneration’s projects; - major concepts used in the analysis and understanding of the built environment (townscape analysis, morphology, uses, natural environment); - description of differents masterplans and design code. The module experiments a design’s method based on site analysis, evaluation and project referred to the local dimension. The final work, prepared in class seminars, concerns: - urban design analysis of the local context (urban pattern, open space and environmental issues, infrastructure and transport issues, community and social issues, existing community facilities, development issues/current initiative); - critical understanding of people’s diverse everyday uses, problems, link and project opportunities, site analysis summary; - strategic context framework plan and project opportunities as answer to the revealed contradictions. Students, in investigation’s group, have to produce four outlines: two concern the urban design analysis of the local context and two describe the project through the elaboration of a masterplan, the formulation of a design code and project’s vision. In the final examination each student presents an overview of the work which is followed by discussion on the issues raised. Design and development of the structural project. Insights on the behavior and verification of the structural elements and of the structures as a whole, including the foundations, with reference to the actions acting on the structure, including the seismic one, and the required performances also with reference to the current technical Code. The Interaction of structural design with other design aspects will be dealt with as, design, should be comprehensive of the various issues. Qualitative and quantitative assessment of structural performance, from conception to project development and construction will be treated and developed.

In relation to the third semester of the LM in Architectural Design, the educational offer is divided into four integrated laboratories, two per channel, respectively of Structural Design 2M (SSD: ICAR09) and Architectural Design 2M (SSD: ICAR14). The integration of the two laboratories consists in sharing a project which in the definitions of the National Technical Regulations on public works is divided into: Feasibility Study, Preliminary, Definitive and Executive Project, and which here, for simplicity, is defined as first and second phase . The first phase is the one associated with: Feasibility Study - Preliminary Project - Definitive Project, in a not very developed phase, and Second Phase: Definitive Project, in a more advanced version, and Executive, in a less advanced version than described in the National Technical Regulations, for example without arriving at formulating the specifications and the estimated metric calculations, but also defining in some detail the elements that make up the project, as well as providing the supporting technical report, both of the choices and of the evaluation of the solicitations and relative security check.

The aspects that lead to a sustainable work also from the structural point of view will be discussed jointly between the two disciplines, in order to arrive at a solution that, in addition to vertical loads, also allows adequate behavior against seismic action. Possibly a significant portion of the project will be identified which, fully developed in the 2M architectural design laboratory, can also be developed in the 2m structural design laboratory up to the more advanced stages envisaged in the latter course. The implications of possible alternative choices will be assessed together, both by adopting typical more traditional structural solutions and of a more advanced and innovative type, such as for example the seismic isolation at the base. The main choices relating to the structural types are then identified, in relation to possible materials to be used in the structure. The alternatives in the choices of horizontals will be discussed, in the resistant system both in relation to the intended use and the architectural configuration, taking into account the design actions to be considered, which also depend on the location of the work. The models to be used for the verification of the project will be identified, even with the knowledge of structural softwares. The verification of the representative model will allow, during the development of the project, to compare possible local solutions, checking the implications that the choices involve also at the level of architectural construction details. The structural tables will be developed up to a rather advanced level of executive detail, to understand the construction and site difficulties that inevitably condition the choices also at an architectural level. It will be possible to carry out sustainability assessments, albeit limited to structural choices, in particular with regard to the aspects of consumption of raw materials and CO2 emissions. http://www.associazioneaicap.com/

1) History of archaeological restoration culture, with specific focus on Rome (Roman Forum, Palatine Hill, Imperial Fora). The lectures aim to highlight the history of changes and re-use which have led to the loss of the original architectural identity up to the time of its intentional “re-creation”, starting from the second half of the Eighteenth Century. Cultural Heritage and regionalist architecture

From Modernism to the revival of Medieval architecture: history, studies and projects. Gustavo Giovannoni: urban restoration and decentralization of the residential neighbourhoods. It is possible to compare Giovannoni’s thoughts and interventions in the architectural field to interpret various aspects of his ideology on the ideal purpose and physical structure of the city. The debate on the “ambientismo” – fuelled by architects and honorary fellows, led by Giovannoni and the Associazione Artistica fra i Cultori di Architettura – recognise the historical architecture, as well as the picturesque feeling inherent the historical urban pattern, as a possible model both to thin out the urban pattern for a healthiness reason and to decentralize new residential districts. Therefore, the “ambientista” approach is clearly influenced by the urban principles of Camillo Sitte, Charles Buls and Joseph Stübben and by the idea of garden city of Ebenezer Howard and Raymond Unwin. Hence, between the 1910s and the 1920s, the ambientismo became the core principle of the urban and architectural project, identifying and reinterpreting the artistic and environmental features typical of each country, while considering the instances of modern building. It is possible to find this cultural orientation in various projects in Rome, such as San Saba, Aniene’s garden city in Montesacro, Ostia Nuova, the garden neighbourhood of Garbatella; all these projects were planned following Giovannoni’s theories and taking care of the relationship between “Vecchie città ed edilizia nuova”. - P.
