Students critically investigate the most appropriate use of building materials, starting from the systematic knowledge of their chemical and physical features. Students also investigate how to transform them into semi-finished components or structural systems. The uses of materials will be assessed against economic convenience, the architectural forms, space requisites, and environmental qualities. The exercise will consider some simple buildings, either modern or ancient, selected in order to investigate the links between tectonic systems and material culture.

The two courses present the organization of human settlements, addressing environmental and spatial development issues. They introduce the history of urban planning, planning methods and implementation tools

The course introduces students to the basic laws of the classical physics, and to methods and language of science. The main topics are cinematics; dynamics of material points; dynamics of particle systems; the equilibrium of rigid bodies; the fluid mechanics; the basic Foundations of thermodynamics; the functioning of thermal machines. Sources of renewable energies are also introduced.

The course revises the Architectural Construction Studio projects from the point of view of the environmental and energetic control of buildings. Foundations of heat transmission, thermodynamics, acoustics and lighting engineering introduce to the understanding of the environmental variables that influence the architectural project.

The studio introduces to the relationship between building techniques and architectural form in experimental design projects, aiming at a critical understanding of the integrating functional appropriateness with respect to uses and context; and building correctness, with respect to technical, economical, and production resources.

The course illustrates elements of the mechanics of rigid bodies and beams, applied to simple iso-static and hyper-static bi-dimensional systems. Main topics are: cinematic of rigid bodies and the notion of perfect constraints; the distributions, equivalence and reduction of force systems; the equilibrium equations and methods for calculating constraint reactions; the model of the linear kinematic beams; contact actions; formulations à la Navier; the resolution of simple iso-static and hyper-static systems

The course introduces the analytical and algebraic tools to manage three-dimensional spaces (and more); differential and multi-variables integral calculus; and linear algebra in relation to the geometric thought.
From forms to formulas, and vice-versa: introduction to the inverse problems and to parametric.

The course proposes to “understand” historical buildings analytically examining architectural features, interpreting historical causes, and evaluating their quality. Students will have to question why buildings have been commissioned and built; what were the aims of architects and builders; which materials and techniques were adopted; which relationship was set with previous or contemporary buildings. Students reconstruct the design process, when documentation is available, investigating links among all these aspects– first part second part (see History 1).

The course provide basic knowledge about the most common building materials (such as concrete and steel), the main elements and structural systems applying the basic working instruments in order to verify the structural security of “small civil buildings”.
Among the topics: classifying and modelling of actions; building materials characteristics (concrete, steel); the behaviour of structural elements (beams and pillars); Foundations of structural analysis.

The studio offers a design experience tailored to acquire the peculiar technical knowledge on historical-artistic buildings, and environmental contexts.
The module of Drawing develops the representation and measurement techniques coherent to historic buildings, and to restoration design.
