Degree Course: Civil engineering for natural hazard mitigation

Nell'ambito dell'area dell'ingegneria civile, i laureati magistrali saranno in grado di assumere responsabilità decisionali autonome in progetti anche di grandi dimensioni e di partecipare attivamente al processo decisionale in contesti anche interdisciplinari.
Questo obiettivo sarà perseguito attraverso corsi di insegnamento teorici e progettuali, oltre che con la redazione della tesi di laurea magistrale.
Esso sarà verificato attraverso i relativi esami di profitto e l'esame di laurea magistrale.Abilità comunicative
I laureati magistrali saranno in grado di comunicare efficacemente e interagire sulle tematiche di interesse con interlocutori specialisti e non specialisti, anche di alto livello, in contesti interdisciplinari.
Questo obiettivo sarà perseguito e verificato attraverso gli esami di profitto e l'esame finale di laurea magistrale.Capacità di apprendimento
I laureati magistrali avranno sviluppato le basi necessarie per procedere, in maniera autonoma, nell'aggiornamento professionale e nell'approfondimento di studi e ricerche.
Questo obiettivo sarà perseguito e verificato attraverso gli esami di profitto, la tesi di laurea magistrale e l'eventuale attività di tirocinio.Requisiti di ammissione
In relazione alla nuova disciplina in vigore per le Lauree Magistrali (120 cfu) il Collegio Didattico in Ingegneria Civile ha così individuato le conoscenze minime richieste per l'accesso alla Laurea Magistrale in Protezione del Territorio dai Rischi Naturali:
a) Attività formative di base: 36 cfu dagli ambiti disciplinari "matematica, informatica e statistica" e " fisica e chimica" previsti dal decreto 16 marzo 2007 del MUR per la classe delle Lauree L7 in Ingegneria Civile Ambientale.
b) Attività formative caratterizzanti: 45 cfu nei SSD "ICAR/01, ICAR/02,ICAR/07, ICAR/08, ICAR/09" presenti nel decreto 16 marzo 2007 del MUR per la classe delle Lauree L7 in Ingegneria Civile Ambientale, avendo sostenuto almeno un esame per ciascuno dei SSD indicati.
La valutazione del possesso delle dette conoscenze minime sarà realizzata tramite l'analisi del curriculum presentato e, eventualmente, con un colloquio.
Specificamente, sarà effettuata la verifica della personale preparazione con modalità definite nel regolamento didattico del corso di studio.Prova finale
La prova finale è costituita dalla discussione di una tesi originale, elaborata in modo autonomo dallo studente sotto la guida di un relatore ed eventualmente di uno o più correlatori, in eventuale coordinamento con le attività di tirocinio.Orientamento in ingresso
Le azioni di orientamento in ingresso sono improntate alla realizzazione di processi di raccordo con la scuola media secondaria.
Si concretizzano in attività di carattere informativo sui Corsi di Studio (CdS) dell'Ateneo ma anche come impegno condiviso da scuola e università per favorire lo sviluppo di una maggiore consapevolezza da parte degli studenti nel compiere scelte coerenti con le proprie conoscenze, competenze, attitudini e interessi.
Le attività promosse si articolano in:
a) autorientamento;
b) incontri e manifestazioni informative rivolte alle future matricole;
c) sviluppo di servizi online e pubblicazione di guide sull'offerta formativa dei CdS.
Tra le attività svolte in collaborazione con le scuole per lo sviluppo di una maggiore consapevolezza nella scelta, il progetto di autorientamento è un intervento che consente di promuovere un raccordo particolarmente qualificato con alcune scuole medie superiori.
Il progetto, infatti, è articolato in incontri svolti presso le scuole ed è finalizzato a sollecitare nelle future matricole una riflessione sui propri punti di forza e sui criteri di scelta.
La presentazione dell'offerta formativa agli studenti delle scuole superiori prevede tre eventi principali distribuiti nel corso dell'anno accademico ai quali partecipano tutti i CdS.
• Salone dello studente, si svolge presso la fiera di Roma fra ottobre e novembre e coinvolge tradizionalmente tutti gli Atenei del Lazio e molti Atenei fuori Regione, Enti pubblici e privati che si occupano di Formazione e Lavoro.
Roma Tre partecipa a questo evento con un proprio spazio espositivo, con conferenze di presentazione dell'offerta formativa dell'Ateneo e promuove i propri Dipartimenti scientifici grazie all'iniziativa Roma 1,2,3 … Scienze;
• Giornate di Vita Universitaria (GVU), si svolgono ogni anno da dicembre a marzo e sono rivolte agli studenti degli ultimi due anni della scuola secondaria superiore.
Si svolgono in tutti i Dipartimenti dell'Ateneo e costituiscono un'importante occasione per le future matricole per vivere la realtà universitaria.
Gli incontri sono strutturati in modo tale che accanto alla presentazione dei Corsi di Laurea, gli studenti possano anche fare un'esperienza diretta di vita universitaria con la partecipazione ad attività didattiche, laboratori, lezioni o seminari, alle quali partecipano anche studenti seniores che svolgono una significativa mediazione di tipo tutoriale.
Partecipano annualmente circa 5.000 studenti;
• Orientarsi a Roma Tre, rappresenta la manifestazione che chiude le annuali attività di orientamento in ingresso e si svolge in Ateneo a luglio di ogni anno.
L'evento accoglie, perlopiù, studenti romani che partecipano per mettere definitivamente a fuoco la loro scelta universitaria.
Durante la manifestazione viene presentata l'offerta formativa e sono presenti, con un proprio spazio, tutti i principali servizi di Roma Tre, le segreterie didattiche e la segreteria studenti.
I servizi online messi a disposizione dei futuri studenti universitari nel tempo sono aumentati tenendo conto dello sviluppo delle nuove opportunità di comunicazione tramite web.
Inoltre, durante tutte le manifestazioni di presentazione dell'offerta formativa, sono illustrati quei servizi online (siti web di Dipartimento, di Ateneo, Portale dello studente etc.) che possono aiutare gli studenti nella loro scelta.
Il Collegio Didattico organizza alcuni eventi di orientamento per gli studenti che frequentano il corso di laurea triennale in Ingegneria Civile, nell'ambito dei quali una delegazione di docenti presenta il CdS.
Tipicamente la presentazione è organizzata nel periodo primaverile e offerta sia agli studenti del secondo che del terzo anno.
Nel corso dell'anno accademico una Commissione ad hoc del Corso di Studio si occupa di fornire supporto agli studenti laureati triennali provenienti da altro ateneo.
La commissione:
- valuta i curricula pregressi degli studenti;
- verifica i requisiti di ammissione e gli eventuali debiti formativi;
- propone agli studenti un piano di studi con indicazione:
-su eventuali corsi singoli da sostenere prima della ammissione;
-su scelte di piano di studi individuale per finire di colmare i debiti formativi.
Il Collegio Didattico pubblicizza inoltre le attività specifiche dei propri Corsi di Studio, attraverso il sito web (https://didattica.sic.uniroma3.it/), la pagina Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/ingegneriacivileroma3/) e il canale YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCIzDXyx06zKxZzV-mwf1XIQ).
Si sottolinea infine come l'esperienza dello studente durante il Corso di Studio triennale in Ingegneria Civile costituisca essa stessa una attività di orientamento significativa ed efficace per una scelta consapevole riguardo alla Laurea Magistrale.Il Corso di Studio in breve
Il corso di laurea mira a formare laureati con solide basi metodologiche e con una elevata qualificazione professionale nell'area dell'Ingegneria Civile per la Protezione dai Rischi Naturali, che siano in grado di operare efficacemente nei numerosi settori applicativi che ne richiedono le competenze, di identificare, formulare e risolvere problemi complessi e/o che richiedano approcci e soluzioni originali, di promuovere e gestire l'innovazione tecnologica, di adeguarsi ai rapidi mutamenti tipici dei settori tecnici.
Lo studente espliciterà le proprie scelte al momento della presentazione,
tramite il sistema informativo di ateneo, del piano di completamento o del piano di studio individuale,
secondo quanto stabilito dal regolamento didattico del corso di studio.

COMPUTATIONAL MECHANICS
(objectives)
Computational Mechanics is a teaching aimed at providing a deep knowledge on physical-mathematical problem of civil engineering. The course is aimed mainly to develop the skills required for the implementation of numerical models with the software Mathematica for the solution of many mathematical models introduced during the teaching. The numerical methods proposed are based on variational formulation of the mathematical problems, finite elements methods (FEM) and finite difference Method. The teaching belongs to the “Ingegneria Civile Per la Protezione dai Rischi Naturali” master course, which aims at training engineers towards high professional levels in the fields of the protection of both environment and civil infrastructures from hydrogeological and seismic hazards. In such framework the teaching aims at defining suitable mathematical-numerical models in the framework of civil engineering and solve them with the help of the software Mathematica. Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to: 1) use Mathematica to solve many problems of civil engineering 2) to classify the mathematical models (elliptic, hyperbolic, parabolic…) 3) use suitable numerical schemes for the resolution of many mathematical problem (variational methods, FEM, finite difference method)

STRUCTURAL DYNAMICS

Structural dynamics is a basic course that aims at providing fundamental knowledge concerning the dynamical response in the linear regime of typical civil engineering structures, in order to develop the skills necessary for the deployment and analysis of simple mechanical models to make sensible design choices as regards the response of a structure to dynamic inputs. This course is part of the master's degree program in "Civil Engineering for Protection from Natural Risks", which aims at training a civil engineer with high professional qualifications in the protection from hydrogeological and seismic hazards. The course aims at provide an in-depth knowledge 1) of the methods for setting up mathematical models that capture the essential aspects of the dynamic response of a structure; 2) basic concepts for the study of linear systems with a finite number of degrees of freedom; 3) of the essential concepts for the study of the dynamic response of continuous systems. At the end of the course students will be able to: 1) know how to use the methods of theoretical mechanics and mechanics of structures to schematize a real structure using a model that captures the essential aspects of the dynamic response; 2) evaluate the dynamic response of systems with a finite number of degrees of freedom; 3) evaluate the dynamic response of continuous systems.

Numerical and statistical methods for Civil Engineering aims at providing students with fundamental knowledge on numerical and statistical methods for civil engineering problems, and at developing the competences required for designing and coding simple numerical and statistical models, also to learn how apply high level softwares for engineering analysis. The course aims at providing in depth knowledge of 1) a technical/scientific programming language; 2) main numerical methods for the solution of ordinary and partial differential equations; 3) descriptive and inferential statistics. CONSTRUCTIONS IN SEISMIC ZONES

The course of Earthquake Engineering is part of the master's degree program in Civil Engineering for Natural Risk Mitigation, which aims to train a civil engineer with high professional qualifications concerning the hydrogeological and seismic risk mitigation. As part of the Master degree program, the course of Earthquake Engineering provides the basic tools for the design and safety verification of civil structures in earthquake prone regions. The program includes the methodologies for the engineering representation of the seismic action, the fundamentals of the seismic behaviour of buildings, the principles of design of earthquake-resistant structures. The characteristics of earthquake motions are illustrated starting from the fault rupture, the propagation of seismic waves, up to the local registration and the engineering representation of earthquake load, and seismic hazard. The basics of the dynamic response of SDOF and MDOF systems under earthquake motions are recalled. The basic principles of design with regards to structural typologies and regularity are presented and the methods for structural analysis are illustrated. The criteria of design and detailing of structural elements in reinforced concrete are finally presented.

The main scope of the course is to provide students with the basic knowledge of environmental engineering. The course belongs to the three-year degree in Civil Engineering, whose aim is to prepare students in civil engineering by providing tools for the design, construction, maintenance and management of civil structures and infrastructures, such as buildings, bridges, tunnels, transport systems, hydraulic works and land protection. Road Materials is also a course of the master degrees in Road Infrastructures and Transport and Civil Engineering for Protection from Natural Risks, whose objective is training a highly professional figure in civil engineering with specific knowledge and skills in road infrastructures design and management and transportation issues and protection from hydrogeological and seismic risks, respectively. Within such framework, the course aims at providing students with the basic knowledge and understanding about 1) the biotic and abiotic environment, with references to ecology, chemistry and biology principles; 2) the reference environmental legislation; 3) water, atmosphere and soil quality parameters; 4) the processes of diffusion of pollutants in the environment; 5) treatment techniques. Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to 1) evaluate the quality parameters of water, atmosphere and soil in relation to the current legislation 2) analyze the different engineering techniques of water, atmosphere and soil treatment in function of the type of pollutant; 3) basic knowledge of the integrated management of urban solid waste.

Theory of Structures is a course whose aim is to provide fundamental knowledge concerning the mono- and bi-dimensional models that find their typical applications in Civil Engineering, so as to allow their consciuos use in common engineering practice. This course is part of the master's degree program in "Civil Engineering for Protection from Natural Risks", whose objective is to train civil engineers with high professional qualifications for the protection from hydrogeological and from seismic risks. Within the framework of this course, the course aims to provide an in-depth knowledge of 1) mono- and bi-dimensional structural models; 2) of some numerical techniques for structural computation. At the end of the course students will be able to: 1) know how to choose the correct model to evaluate the response of a real structure; 2) use the chose model to evaluate the response of the structure, both analytically and numerically.

Geotechnics II aims at providing knowledge and competences for the proper definition of geotechnical models, for the planning of sampling and testing campaigns, both in situ and in laboratory, for the design of foundations of civil infrastructures and structures. The course of “Advanced Structural Analysis” is part of the master's degree program in Civil Engineering for Natural Risk Mitigation, which aims to train a civil engineer with high professional qualifications concerning the hydrogeological and seismic risk mitigation. As part of the Master degree program, the course of “Advanced Structural Analysis” aims to provide students with specific theoretical and analytical tools, in order to complement the knowledge acquired in previous structural engineering courses. Prestressed concrete, steel and steel-concrete composite structures, including the static behavior of framed structures, special structures, such as discontinuity regions, R.C. walls and bracing elements, will be analyzed. At the end of the course, students will acquire the necessary skills to 1) critically analyze the static behavior of reinforced concrete (normal and prestressed), steel and steel-concrete composite frame structures, including the design of the main elements, both with reference to current National Technical Code and the Eurocodes, 2) designing special structures such as discontinuity regions and R.C. walls, 3) dealing with problems concerning the behavior of three-dimensional structures under horizontal loads and the design of bracing elements.

The main scope of the course is to provide students with the basic knowledge and develop the fundamental skills of (i) civil and industrial wastewater management, and (ii) key elements for the design of wastewater treatment plant. The course belongs to the master degree in Civil Engineering for the protection from natural hazards, which aims to prepare highly qualified students in civil engineering by providing tools for the design, construction, maintenance and management of civil structures and infrastructures. The course of “Theory and design of Bridges” is part of the master's degree program in Civil Engineering for Natural Risk Mitigation, which aims to train a civil engineer with high professional qualifications concerning the hydrogeological and seismic risk mitigation. As part of the Master degree program, the course of Theory and design of Bridges aims to provide students with the basic knowledge and analysis tools necessary to deal with the design of simple road and railway small/medium span bridges (box-girder and I-girder), both with prestressed concrete and steel-concrete composite decks. The design criteria, the currently available analysis and constructional methods will be analyzed. At the end of the course, students will acquire the necessary skills to 1) design the main elements (r.c. slab, deck girders, piers, abutments and foundations) of small/medium span bridges, 2) analyze their structural behavior using simplified and refined models (F.E.M.), even in the presence of rheological behaviors and non-linear phenomena, 3) apply to the main elements of a bridge the design and the assessment methods prescribed by the Italian Code and the Eurocodes, both in ultimate (SLU) and serviceability (SLE) conditions, as well as in presence of exceptional loads such an earthquake, 3) carry out professional structural drawings.

Advanced Hydraulics is a course aimed at giving a deep knowledge on incompressible fluids motion and on their Mathematical modelling. The course is also aimed at developing the skills necessary to formulate and use basic numerical models for solving the most common mathematical models of applied Hydraulics: the method of characteristics and the finite difference method.
The course belongs to the master of Civil Engineering for the Protection from Natural Hazards, which is aimed at preparing a highly qualified Civil Engineer in the field of the protection of the territory and civil infrastructures from hydrogeological and seismic hazards. In this framework, the course defines conceptual hydraulic models of increasing complexity, with particular reference to the most common ones: the 1D and 2D hydraulic model.

(objectives)
The objective of the course of Environmental Hydraulics is the knowledge of atmospheric and marine/oceanic flows at a meso and large scale and with and without stratification. The course aims at developing the skills needed for the development of suitable schemes and mathematical models simulating environmental hydraulics phenomena. In addition, the course aims at improving the knowledge of the numerical and experimental models used to simulate such flows. The course is part of the master degree course in “Civil Engineering for Natural Hazard Mitigation” which aims at training a civil engineer with high professional qualification in the territory and civil works protection from hydrogeological and seismic risks. The course aims at defining conceptual models with different complexity levels for the simulations of atmospheric and marine/oceanic flows. At the end of the course, the students will be able to: understand the complex dynamics of atmospheric and marine/oceanic flows occurring at different spatial scales with and without stratification; select the suitable models for the simulation of the different flows; understand and use the data obtained by laboratory and /or numerical experiments simulating stratified flows.

WATER QUALITY MANAGEMENT
(objectives)
The main scope of the Water Quality Management course is to provide students with the basic knowledge of the physical and biogeochemical mechanisms controlling the quality of groundwater (flow and contaminant transport modeling in groundwater). Furthermore the course addresses the assessment of contamination level, health risk and groundwater remediation systems. Water Quality Management course is part of the master's degree program in "Civil Engineering for Protection from Natural Risks", whose objective is to train civil engineers with high professional qualifications for the protection from hydrogeological and seismic risks. Within the framework of this course, the course aims to provide an in-depth knowledge of 1) flood legislation; 2) contamination sources in natural and anthropic environments; 3) main physical mechanisms of contaminant transport in groundwater and soils; 4) modelling of solute transport in environmental systems most popular computational tools flow and transport modeling in groundwater; 5) health risk due to contaminated groundwater; 6) main groundwater remediation systems. Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to 1) identify fundamental criteria and restrictions for the assessment of the environmental concentration and the related health risk ; 2) develop an hydrological/hydraulic model for the study of a contaminated site; 3) perform simulations exploring different contamination scenarios; 4) identify the most appropriate solution for groundwater remediation; 6) prepare project report and drawings.

POLLUTANT DYNAMICS IN WATER BODIES
(objectives)
Pollutant dynamics in water bodies is a teaching aimed at providing a deep knowledge on transport phenomena of active and passive, conservative and reactive pollutants, in natural water bodies, and at giving their mathematical formulation. The course also aims at consolidating the skills required for the developments of numerical models for the solution of the mathematical models introduced during the teaching. The teaching belongs to the “Ingegneria Civile Per la Protezione dai Rischi Naturali” master course, which aims at training engineers towards high professional levels in the fields of the protection of both environment and civil infrastructures from hydrogeological and seismic hazards. In such framework the teaching aims at defining conceptual models with increasing complexity for the representation of advective/diffusive/reactive transport phenomena in water. Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to: 1) examine a practical case of propagation of a pollutant in a water body; 2) verify the availability of existing formulations for a proper modelling of the phenomenon at hand; when this is not the case, they will be able to formulate a new one; 3) design and/or interpret experiments and dye studies aimed at determining values for the parameters of the derived model; 4) numerically solve the model, explicitly accounting for sources of uncertainty and their weight on the final result.

In such framework the teaching aims at defining suitable conceptual models for the representation of transport phenomena in natural rivers and in debris flows phenomena. HYDRAULIC PROTECTION OF LAND
(objectives)
The main scope of the course is to provide students with the basic hydrologic and hydraulic knowledge and develop the fundamental skills for flood risk assessment and management. Flood Risk Assessment and Management course is part of the master's degree program in "Civil Engineering for Protection from Natural Risks", whose objective is to train civil engineers with high professional qualifications for the protection from hydrogeological and seismic risks. Within the framework of this course, the course aims to provide an in-depth knowledge of 1) flood legislation; 2) risk definition and methods for its estimation; 3) hydrologic methods for design quantities estimation and hydraulic models for water propagation; 4) most popular computational tools for flood modeling; 5) hydraulic structures for flood control and risk mitigation; 6) main criteria for structure design based on cost-benefit analysis. Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to 1) identify fundamental criteria and restrictions for flood defense structure design; 2) perform statistical analysis and estimate the hydrological load acting on the structures (design quantities) using the most appropriate models based on the available hydrological information; 3) estimate flood extent and risk by using the most popular tools for flood modeling; 4) identify the most appropriate solution for risk mitigation based on a cost-benefit analysis; 6) prepare project report and drawings.

DESIGN OF HARBOURS AND MARITIME STRUCTURES
(objectives)
Design of harbours aims at providing knowledge and competences for the design of a complex civil infrastructure, with specific reference to a maritime terminal. A detailed knowledge of the following topics is provided: 1) main maritime terminals; 2) main maritime structures typologies and design methods; 3) planning and management of engineering design activities; 4) meteoceanographic data statistical analysis and models for the wave propagation into harbours; 5) oral and written presentation methods. After the course the students shall be able of: 1) specifying the requirements of the project, identifying the constraints and the relevant codes; 2) planning the design activities; 3) developing statistical analyses on meteoceanographic data, to provide inputs for the design activities; 4) applying numerical models for the wave penetration into harbours; 5) defining alternative design solutions and select the optimal one; 6) using cad software and designing the main maritime structures, also providing a preliminary plan of the construction activities; 7) presenting orally the design and writing accurate reports; 8) working in team.
