The course will bring students to learn essentials about Spanish culture and literature of the XVIth and XVIIth century; guided by the professor, students will also develop applied abilities in analyzing literary texts.

Students will develop a general knowledge of the literature and culture of Anglophone countries from the Victorian Age (1830) to the Twentieth Century. The course will introduce students to the most significant critical approaches of literary theory with particular emphasis on the specificities of literary language and on the intertextual, intermedial, intercultural aspects of a good range of literary texts. Students will develop an ability to critically engage with literary works and their cultural and historical contexts.

Typology and levels of analysis; interaction between different levels of grammar (phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics). Identification of universal principles of language and their different realizations in typologically different languages. Critical reflection on data and on
theoretical hypotheses.
Diachronic linguistics: history of comparative linguistics, comparative method, indo-europeistic reconstruction (phonetics, morphology), comparison between genetic, areal and typological classification; linguistic change (at different levels), its motivations and diffusion.

The ancient philosophy class aims to provide students with a basic knowledge of ancient philosophy from its origins to the 6th century AD. A special focus will be given to Plato’s Republic, books 1-5. Passages from this work will be read against the wider background of Plato’s philosophy and the critical debate surrounding it, A brief overview will be given of the main issues in Plato’s Republic.
