HYPERFREQUENCY COMPONENTS
(objectives)
THE STUDENT WILL LEARN HOW TO UNDERSTAND PROPERTIES AND DESIGN OF VARIOUS MICROWAVE COMPONENTS (BOTH PASSIVE AND ACTIVE), CIRCUITS, USED IN BASIC RF/MICROWAVE FRONTEND FUNCTIONAL BLOCKS AND LEARN HOW TO APPLY THESE PROPERTIES FOR PARTICULAR DESIGNS. THE STUDENT WILL LEARN HOW TO DESIGN BASIC RF/MICROWAVE FRONTEND FUNCTIONAL BLOCKS USING BOTH ANALYTICAL TOOLS AND ADVANCED COMPUTER-AIDED DESIGN TOOLS. THE STUDENT WILL, THROUGH THE LAB SESSIONS, DEVELOP AN INTUITION AND PHYSICAL FEELING FOR MICROWAVE PHENOMENON AND TO GET FIRST HANDS-ON EXPERIENCE WITH MICROWAVES COMPONENTS AND EQUIPMENT.

Sensors and transducers
(objectives)
The aim of the course is to describe the principles of operation of the main ultrasonic sensors and transducers. They will be provided to students the basic knowledge of the acousto-electronic, in order to give the tools for the analysis and simulation of transduction systems. Particular emphasis will be given to the capacitive micromachined transducers on silicon, which represent the state of the art of the microsensors integrated technology. They will be also examined the piezoelectric sensors and transducers, with particular attention to biomedical sensors that involve the use of ultrasound. The exercises include the design and the realization of a complete acoustic system for gestural detecting in the space (touchless interface for PC).

INTEGRATED CIRCUITS TECHNOLOGY
(objectives)
AIM OF THE COURSE IS TO OFFER AN EXHAUSTIVE DESCRIPTION OF THE MOST ADVANCED MICROELECTRONIC TECHNOLOGIES (MATERIAL TREATMENT AND DEVICE REALIZATION). AFTER A BRIEF INTRODUCTION ON THE INDUSTRIAL NEED FOR INTEGRATED SEMICONDUCTOR CIRCUITS, THE COURSE WILL COVER 5 MAIN SUBJECTS: 1) MATERIALS FOR MICROELECTRONICS: IT’S AN INTRODUCTION TO THE DIFFERENT KINDS OF SEMICONDUCTORS USED IN VLSI-ULSI TECHNOLOGY, AND TO THE REQUIREMENTS THEY HAVE TO MEET DEPENDING ON THE APPLICATION; 2) GROWTH AND CHARACTERIZATION OF SILICON CRYSTALS: THIS PART DEALS WITH THE GROWTH AND CHARACTERIZATION TECHNIQUES OF SILICON CRYSTALLINE SUBSTRATES (WAFERS) USED IN MODERN PLANAR TECHNOLOGY; 3) THIN FILMS: THIS SECTION WILL COVER THE MAIN THIN FILM DEPOSITION TECHNIQUES, FROM METALS (PVD, ELECTRON-BEAM, SPUTTERING) TO DIELECTRICS (CVD, THERMAL OXIDATION), FROM III-V COMPOUNDS (MBE, MOCVD), TO MONO-, POLY- AND NANOSILICON, DIAMOND, AND OTHER RELEVANT SEMICONDUCTORS. 4) BASIC TECHNOLOGICAL PROCESSES: THIS SECTION WILL DEAL WITH SUB-MICROMETRIC PHOTOLITHOGRAPHY (VUV, IONIC AND ELECTRON-BEAM LITHOGRAPHY), DOPING (DIFFUSION, ION IMPLANTATION) AND ETCHING (DRY, WET) TECHNIQUES; 5) VLSI-ULSI TECHNOLOGY: IN THIS SECTION A COMPREHENSIVE DESCRIPTION OF BJT, CMOS, BICMOS AND PASSIVE COMPONENTS VLSI-ULSI TECHNOLOGY WILL BE MADE, SHOWING THE WHOLE FABRICATION PROCESS FROM THE CIRCUIT SCHEMATICS TO THE INDUSTRIAL REALIZATION.

Sensors and transducers
(objectives)
The purpose of the course is to describe the principles of operation of key ultrasonic sensors and transducers. In particular, it will be treated the silicon microsensors, representing the state of the art both for the small size, that is well matched with the microelectronics, and for the low cost. It will also treated in depth transducers, sensors and piezoelectric actuators and cmut. The methodological part of the course is dedicated to the study of the most important aspects of the devices operation, using simplified analytical models. The practice is dedicated to the development of numerical exercises with the use of commercial fea (finite element analysis) software, ansys, to allow to the students, the design and the simulation of real devices.

Marketing and Management of Electronics
(objectives)
Marketing is the business function that deals with customers' unfulfilled needs and wants. The role of the engineers today is to deliver new products that are in line with market expectations. To identify and measure these needs, the modern engineer need to understand and determine which targets the business can serve, decide the appropriate products and services, and determine the optimal methods of pricing, promoting and distributing the products or services. This course is designed for students with little or no marketing experience.
