BASIC STRUCTURAL MECHANICS
(obiettivi)
THE COURSE OF BASIC STRUCTURAL MECHANICS AIMS AT INTRODUCING THE BASICS OF THE MECHANICS OF MATERIAL STRUCTURES, NAMELY, THE NOTIONS OF STRAIN, STRESS, AND MECHANICAL RESPONSE. IN THEIR MOST ELEMENTARY FORM, THESE NOTIONS ARE TRADITIONALLY PRESENTED UNDER THE OLD-FASHIONED TITLE OF STRENGTH OF MATERIALS. HOWEVER, STRENGTH IS NOT THE ONLY SIGNIFICANT MECHANICAL PROPERTY OF MATERIAL STRUCTURES, AND BY FAR NOT THE MOST STRAIGHTFORWARD.

THIS COURSE STRIVES TO GIVE AN UP-TO-DATE PERSPECTIVE ON STRUCTURAL MECHANICS, POINTING TO THE USEFULNESS OF ITS APPLICATION TO MANY DIVERSE ISSUES IN SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING AT VASTLY DIFFERENT SPACE AND TIME SCALES, FROM GEOLOGICAL TO SUB-CELLULAR. CORRESPONDINGLY, THE CONCEPTS AND TECHNIQUES INTRODUCED ARE ILLUSTRATED THROUGH CAREFULLY CHOSEN EXAMPLES FROM BOTH NATURAL AND MAN-MADE STRUCTURES.
