CLINICAL MICROBIOLOGY
(objectives)
The course aims to provide the student with (i) the fundamentals of medical microbiology as a diagnostic discipline, analyzing the peculiar structural and functional characters of microorganisms and viruses, (ii) knowledge of antibacterial drugs and vaccines, (iii) basic concepts on management in the use of antibiotics, as well as (iv) notions regarding antibiotic stewardship as an improvement in clinical outcome, with concomitant decrease in bacterial resistance, inappropriate drug use and adverse events. Finally, an in-depth study of the clinical and managerial nature of antibiotic use will be provided, in order to make antibiotic prescribing increasingly appropriate, in terms of both efficacy and tolerability and rationalization of resources.
