(syllabus)
Labour supply Labour demand Labour market equilibrium The institutions that regulate the labour market Labour market failures Active and passive labour market policies Education and human capital Discrimination in the labour market Applied analysis of the labour market.
The first part of the course focuses on the theoretical analysis of the labour market and on the implications of policy. The decision-making processes that determine the behaviour of individuals and firms in the labour market are analysed, in terms of labour supply and demand and, therefore, of equilibrium in a competitive market and in an imperfectly competitive market. The topic of education choices and training of human capital is introduced. The imperfections of the labour market are explored in depth, with particular attention to the problem of unemployment and wage differentials. Finally, the topic of discrimination in the labour market is analysed. The second part of the course explores some topics with empirical analyses, also through the use of software used in econometrics, and through the reading and analysis of scientific articles.
