HYDRAULIC PROTECTION OF LAND
(objectives)
The main scope of the course is to provide students with the basic hydrologic and hydraulic knowledge and develop the fundamental skills for flood risk assessment and management. Flood Risk Assessment and Management course is part of the master's degree program in "Civil Engineering for Protection from Natural Risks", whose objective is to train civil engineers with high professional qualifications for the protection from hydrogeological and seismic risks. Within the framework of this course, the course aims to provide an in-depth knowledge of 1) flood legislation; 2) risk definition and methods for its estimation; 3) hydrologic methods for design quantities estimation and hydraulic models for water propagation; 4) most popular computational tools for flood modeling; 5) hydraulic structures for flood control and risk mitigation; 6) main criteria for structure design based on cost-benefit analysis. Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to 1) identify fundamental criteria and restrictions for flood defense structure design; 2) perform statistical analysis and estimate the hydrological load acting on the structures (design quantities) using the most appropriate models based on the available hydrological information; 3) estimate flood extent and risk by using the most popular tools for flood modeling; 4) identify the most appropriate solution for risk mitigation based on a cost-benefit analysis; 6) prepare project report and drawings.
