KNOW AND EVALUATE TO IMPROVE THE CITY
course learning outcomes The course aims to introduce students to the tools and operational practices within the theoretical and legislative framework of Italian and European urban planning, developed through lectures and guided readings. The practical part is developed through analytical design exercises on basic topics, starting at the beginning of the course and aimed at developing methods and techniques for analysis, evaluation and design in a limited urban context (parts of cities), with a focus on morphology and the graphic and symbolic language of disciplinary expression.
The experiment is organised into phases of classroom seminars, with standardised procedures and unified content. In summary, the phases are: - presentation of the topic/problem and definition of the exercise objectives; - reading of the context by systems ( pattern, open space and services, infrastructure) and levels (from the block to the neighbourhood); - assessment of points of contradiction (functional, morphological and environmental) and spaces available and/or reclaimable for transformation; - possible proposals for design interventions as a response to the contradictions identified.
The basic theoretical topics covered, in summary, concern: - critical presentation of the discipline, through a basic glossary and historical and critical notes on the city and urban planning; - interpretation of the morphologies of settlement transformation (morphological typologies and descriptive models); - identification of transformation factors (localisation theory, rent theory, social and ecological theories, etc.); - the plan (content, scale and effectiveness); - content and evolution of technical regulatory instruments and means of expressing the plan. The examination will focus on the critical analysis and discussion of the work carried out in class and certain related theoretical aspects.
