(syllabus)
Two modules 1. Linguistic history of German-speaking countries, 6 ECTS The course outlines the polycentric history of the German language from its origins to the present day, contextualising it in the main cultural transformations in the broad sense and focusing on the constant contribution of Latin and then French, dwelling on phenomena such as medieval mysticism, the Lutheran Reformation, the importance of literature in shaping a unitary German in the 18th century, as well as focusing on the linguistic aspects of socio-political phenomena such as 19th century linguistic nationalism, Nazism and the division of the two Germanies or the languages of globalisation.
2. Structures of Contemporary German (1st semester), 6 ECTS (see details under Dr. Michele Vangi) The mainly syntactic structures of German will be studied in order to develop strategies for reading and understanding simple texts. The module has a strongly grammatical-synchronic character, but is also linked to the diachronic dimension addressed in the previous module.
