1 THE SEISMIC RESPONSE OF STRUCTURES:
1.1 Response of Structures in the linear field
1.1.1. 1-degree-of-freedom systems:
- Simple oscillator, - Free oscillations with and without damping, - Forced oscillations with and without damping, - Response of a simple oscillator subject to a generic forcer, - Definition of Elastic Response Spectra (acceleration, velocity, displacement), - Calculation of seismic forces on the simple oscillator using the elastic response spectrum of accelerations.
1.1.2. Multi-degree-of-freedom systems:
- Concentrated mass models, - Free oscillations, - Modal analysis, - Seismic actions, - Seismic analysis by acceleration response spectrum, - Simplified approaches.
1.2. Seismic response of structures in the nonlinear field:
- Ductility (material, section, element, structure), - Simple oscillator with elastoplastic behavior, - Nonlinear response spectra (design spectra), - Coefficient of structure.
2. CONSTRUCTION ENGINEERING RECALLS AND INSIGHTS.
- Mechanical characterization of materials and simplified bonds according to standards (NTC and Eurocode No.2 and No.8), - Recalls for design and verification according to ultimate limit states (ULS; normal stress, bending, buckling, and shear), - Recalls for design and verification according to service limit states (SLS; bending), - Design and verification at ULS for deflected presso bending stresses, - Design and verification at ULS: construction of M-N strength domains for presso-flexed r.c. elements, - Design and verification at ULS r.c. elements for torsion stress, - ULS design and verification of r.c. slabs and plates, - ULS design and verification for r.c. surface foundations.
3. THE DESIGN OF STRUCTURES IN THE SEISMIC ZONE
- Insights into seismic action, - Structural concept and Criteria for good design of ca structures in a seismic zone, - Introductions to possible design strategies in the seismic zone (elastic design, ductility design, seismic isolation design, etc), - Structural modeling in a seismic zone, - Standards for structural design (Technical Construction Standards in Italy, Eurocodes in Europe, international standards), - Hints on Foundation Design.
4. DESIGN APPLICATION: STRUCTURE DESIGNED IN SEISMIC ZONE
4.1. Design and verification of floors:
- Choice of Structural Type, - Technical standards for design and verification, - Definition of the Structural System (section geometries, texture, etc.), - Analysis of elementary loads and their combinations, - Analytical modeling of the floor, - Numerical modeling of the floor (F.E.M. software), - Design and verification, - Construction details, - Structural design drawings.
4.2. Design and verification of a structure:
- Definition of seismic action, - Analysis and combinations of elementary loads, - Definition of the Structural System, - Technical standards for structural design (Italian NTC and Eurocode No.2 and No.8). - Analytical modeling, - Numerical modeling using F.E.M. software, - Study of structural behavior, - Modal analysis, - Infills, - Secondary elements, - Design and verification of elements according to the hierarchy of strengths, - Analysis by acceleration response spectrum according to Technical Standards, - Design and verification of structural elements SLS and ULS (beams, slabs, plates, piers, septa, nodes, and stairs), - Hints of geotechnics: soil bearing capacity, creep verification, - Design and verification of surface foundations (punching, bending reinforcement), - Construction details, - Preparation of structural design drawings.
5. INSIGHTS ON STRUCTURES IN SEISMIC ZONE
- Seismic retrofitting or improvement of existing structures, - Sustainable structural design, - Innovative construction techniques.
