| URBAN PLANNING STUDIO
(objectives)
To provide students with theoretical-critical and operational tools aimed at the construction and transformation of contemporary urban space in order to • increase their awareness of the problematic features of the urban condition and the social, environmental and economic implications of the use and transformation of the territory; • develop a critical thinking with respect to the possibility of prefiguring actions capable of addressing the problems posed by the city. The course includes theoretical classes and exercises with analysis of urban plans and policies, studies on consolidated and changing urban territorial and social contexts, and design of parts of them.

(syllabus)
The course addresses urban-scale design topics within the framework of methods established by the new Master Plan (PRG) of the city of Rome, focusing on themes such as: urban regeneration, particularly in public housing neighborhoods; public space design; the integration of climate change mitigation and adaptation goals into urban projects; and the involvement of local communities throughout the various phases of the design process. The workshop provides elements of urban planning at the scale of operational municipal planning, referencing both the general planning scale and the principles and methods of sustainable urban development. Study topic: urban regeneration in Rome, considering infrastructure, services, and the ecological network, within the perspective of ecological transition. The work will focus on developing strategies and intervention programs for urban regeneration and for restoring the environmental and landscape values of Rome’s Piani di Zona (I PEEP and II PEEP). In particular, the proposed interventions will concern selected Piani di Zona in problematic contexts where the “public neighborhood” interacts and contrasts with other urban forms. Special attention will be given to the structural conditions—physical, economic, and social—for the production and renewal of public goods, including a quantitative assessment of infrastructure, services, and standards.

| Module: URBAN ANTHROPOLOGY
(objectives)
The city to come is hidden in the city that is already built and inhabited. In order to reveal it, it is necessary to become aware of people's vulnerabilities and of the socio-spatial processes that take place in urban spaces and contribute to organising social life. In order to sharpen this view, the module provides appropriate analytical tools such as ethnography and field observation of urban processes.

(syllabus)
The course is structured around a common section that offers an overview of topics and issues in urban anthropology and ethnographic methodology, followed by discussion and support for group projects, divided according to the workshop channels. The first part addresses the basic elements of anthropological research – the concept of culture, overcoming “race”, relativism/ethnocentrism, ethnic identity, and the analysis of processes from the colonial situation to globalisation and the multicultural situation. The paths of urban studies will then be explored in depth: the birth of the city, between civilisation and Babel; reflections on urban modernity in the dialogue between Europe and the United States, with Toennies, Durkheim, Simmel, then Park with Chicago, with urban ecology between street corner society and ghetto, and finally the Los Angeles/New York models. This will be followed by the paths of the “ethno-city” in Africa, with dynamism and situational analysis. Next, we will return to the old continent with the urban policies of the glorious 30s, the concepts of gentrification and the right to the city. Finally, we will explore the methodology of ethnographic research, particularly in urban contexts, starting from new perspectives, overcoming classical objectivism and taking a participatory approach, up to the analysis of critical areas of the current global multiculturalism. In the second part, the project work of the groups in the individual channels will be shared, analysed and discussed.
