DE ROSA GIAN LUIGI
(syllabus)
The course aims to deepen the study of the syntax of both European and Brazilian Portuguese, with a focus on complex constructions, register variation, and the interface between syntax, pragmatics, and semantics. It provides tools for advanced syntactic analysis and for comparing Portuguese syntax with that of other Romance languages. The course will begin with a review of the basics, starting from the simple sentence—subject, predicate, and complements—to verb types, verb valency, and the complex sentence. Additionally, attention will be given to sentence segmentation and constituent order (topicalization, dislocation, and focus, including cleft and pseudo-cleft sentences).
