The course belongs to the category of elective courses and is therefore conceived as an in-depth study of some themes which are intertwined with the institutional courses of Architectural history. The lectures will be dedicated to the history of architecture in Rome in the 16th century, which will be contextualised in the framework of Europe in the early modern age. The theme of the course for the academic year 2024-2025 is: Study of Antiquity and Ruins in Renaissance Rome.
During the course, the main architects active in Rome in the 15th and 16th centuries will be covered. Their work will be interpreted in light of the course topic.
Lecture topics: St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican as ruin under construction; Ruins, antiquity and spolia in the Renaissance; Drawing the Antique: subjects, techniques, visions; The Design of the Antique.
The course is open to students of all Bachelor and Master degree courses.
