(syllabus)
The course examines the most relevant themes and moments in the history of the 19th and 20th centuries, such as the rise and fall of European empires, nation-building and nationalism, totalitarianism, the Cold War, colonialism/decolonization, democratic transitions, European integration, with particular attention to the issues of minorities, migration, and human rights. Furthermore, the course examines the political and cultural process of the foundation of the Italian Republic and the main dynamics of social change from the post-war period to the present day. It also offers a workshop on historiographical sources aimed at familiarizing students with the fundamentals of historical research and acquiring critical reading skills of reality.
