20710035-1 FONTI E MATERIALI PER L'ARTE CONTEMPORANEA - LM in History of Art LM-89 BELMONTE CARMEN
(syllabus)
The course focuses on the museum displays, exhibitions and expositions of the Fascist period in Italy and abroad. The focus is on exhibition narratives and practices through the analysis of multiple documentary, photographic and audiovisual sources. From the Exhibition of the Fascist Revolution at the Palazzo delle Esposizioni to the international exhibitions of colonial art to the Triennial Exhibition of Overseas Lands in 1940, the exhibition projects are ideal laboratories for examining Fascism's propaganda and cultural diplomacy strategies. The ephemeral and temporary dimension of the exhibitions was flanked by projects designed instead to last and affect the urban planning of cities, such as the Universal Exhibition in Rome, planned for 1942 and never inaugurated due to the war. The material legacies of the exhibitions of the Ventennio that still remain in public space and in museum collections spur reflection on the politics of the memory of fascism in republican Italy. To this end, there will be on-site seminars in the EUR district and a visit to the Museum of Civilisations, whose curators are currently rethinking the display of the collections of the former Colonial Museum of Rome, one of the most important museums of fascist propaganda.
