(syllabus)
The course - aims to provide students with basic knowledge of Bibliography and Library Science - introduces the essential tools functional to the library profession. - examines the definitions of ‘information literacy’ (Information Literacy) and introduces the concept of ‘media and information literacy’ (Media and Information Literacy), based on the most recent UNESCO documents and library associations and institutions; - dwells on the goals of Agenda 2030 and the role of libraries and the different ways (organisational, educational etc.) to achieve them; - indicates and analyses various approaches and methods of the information retrieval process, also with reference to the phenomena of Information Overload and the digital divide; - reflects on the role of libraries and librarians in counteracting the aforementioned phenomena, through the development and provision of customised services (Reference Library), user education, thanks also to the new web 2.0 social interaction tools. The basic concepts of bibliography, librarianship and documentation are introduced (definition, areas of competence, historical background and relationships between the three disciplines): 1. Bibliography: definition; areas of expertise; historical background; typologies; bibliographic citation and citation styles (e.g. APA, MLA, Chicago/Turabian etc.); directory compilation: the ‘bibliographic chain’; tools; ISO standards. 2. Library science: definition; areas of expertise; historical background (history of the library with hints of the history of the book); types of libraries (state, university, public etc.). ) - Library legislation - Intellectual property and copyright - Public library: definition, historical background, IFLA guidelines and UNESCO Manifesto - School library: definition, historical background, IFLA guidelines (with particular reference to the last ones) and UNESCO Manifesto - Library as a complex system: organisation, planning, management and evaluation - Automation - Information processing and organisation - Descriptive cataloguing: choice and form of heading (RE 2. Librarianship: definition; areas of expertise; historical background (history of the library with an outline of book history); types of libraries (state, university, public etc.) - Library legislation - Intellectual property and copyright ) - Library legislation - Intellectual property and copyright - Public library: definition, historical background, IFLA guidelines and UNESCO Manifesto - Children's library: definition, historical background, IFLA guidelines and UNESCO Manifesto - School library: definition, historical background, IFLA guidelines (with emphasis on the latter) and UNESCO Manifesto - Library as a complex system Organisation, planning, management and evaluation - Automation - Information processing and organisation - Descriptive cataloguing: choice and form of header (REICAT) and ISBD - Semantic cataloguing: Dewey, CDU, by subject and thesauri - OPAC - Measurement and evaluation - Development of material and digital collections and organisation of physical and virtual spaces functional to learning through resources 3.
