(syllabus)
Cultural knowledge: the aim of this course is to deepen the knowledge in cell biology, with special emphasis to the structural organization and to the functions of different compartments of eukaryotic animals cells. the course is aimed at providing students with the cultural and methodological grounding that allow the critical discussion of the scientific literature in the field of cell biology. a laboratory activity will be organized to promote hands-on experience with various "state of the art" techniques used in modern research. Methodological skills: to know how to design an experiment, to acquire and analyze the data obtained from the laboratory activity. Topics: the course will deepen the following topics: the compartmentalization of cells; the sorting and the transport of proteins in different cell compartments; the intracellular vesicular traffic; the maintenance of the compartmental diversity; endocytosis and exocytosis, extracellular vesicles; structures and mechanisms involved in protein and organelle degradation: autophagy; the cytoskeleton organization with special emphasis to cell behavior (cell adhesion and migration). The laboratory activity will be mainly devoted to the preparation and maintenance of cell cultures and to the design of a scientific experiment by students.
