GENERAL LINGUISTICS 3
(objectives)
The teaching of General Linguistics 3 is part of the basic training activities of "General and Applied Philology and Linguistics" of the degree course in Languages and Language Mediation-Cultural, specifically the activities aimed at providing the tools of analysis and theoretical and metalinguistic reflection on languages and language. The teaching is divided into two channels, chosen by the student: channel I ("Typology, universal and brain") and channel II ("Diachrony"). The channel "Typology, Universal and Brain" aims to provide: knowledge of the fundamentals of linguistic typology, with particular reference to morphological and syntactic types. Typology and universality. Biological basis of language. The channel "Diacronia" aims to provide basic knowledge in relation to linguistic change, at various levels of analysis, and comparison within the Indo-European context, with attention also to area and typological comparison. Expected learning outcomes: - Channel I students will learn about the fundamentals of linguistic typology, typology and universals, and the biological basis of language; - Channel II students will have basic knowledge of linguistic change, the reconstruction of the Indo-European phonological system, genetic, areal and typological comparison.

Linguistic type. Typological corpus. Syntactic and morphological typology. Areal typology. Diachronic typology. Linguistic universals and tendencies. Implicational universals. Explaining language universals. Biological bases for language, brain localization, mirror neurons. Brain imaging techniques. Language in humans and non-humans. Origins (onto- and phylogenesis) of language. Linguistic innatism, functionalism, evolutionism.

(syllabus)
This course will deal with the following three topics: (1) Basic knowledge of the history of comparative and historical linguistics. (2) Learning the comparative method (reconstruction of the Indo-European phonological system) and the most important phonetic laws; analysis of some topics of the Indo-European morphophonology; comparison among genealogical, typological, and areal classification of languages. (3) Analysis of the linguistic change, at phonetic, phonological, morphological, syntactic, and semantic level. Learning the reasons of linguistic change, and its spread in space and society.
