Attività: On «roma, mater legum» and artists: the roman law through painters’ eyes
(objectives)
The course aims to offer an original perspective on Roman law through the masterpieces of the great artists whose paintings depicted ancient Rome. Those themes that most stimulated the interest and imagination of the artists, such as the role of religion and myth, the condition of women, political organization and military campaigns, will be studied in particular. At the conclusion of the module, students should have deepened their knowledge of the social and legal universe of the Romans, understood the importance of the cultural legacy it represented, and acquired the tools to explain how artists interpreted Roman antiquity, as well as the reasons for such fascination.

(syllabus)
The course aims to offer an original perspective on the Roman law through the masterpieces of the great artists whose paintings represented the Roman past. Topics studied include the role of religion and myth in ancient Rome, politics and warfare, the status of women and other subjects pertaining to the Roman World. By the end of the module it is expected that students should have the knowledge and understanding to account how each artist has interpreted the ancient Roman world, and why does this world inspired painters.
