Language, society, culture: the argumentative discourse and the translation in the democratic public space
Which social uses of language do foster a democratic public space of dialogue, mediation, and a common search for shared solutions? The French discourse analysis in recent years has insisted on the democratic virtues of the argumentative discourse and more generally of the rhetoric; translation studies, on the other hand, have addressed the challenges posed by the multicultural society, starting from the linguistic and cultural translation difficulties. The course proposes a double itinerary through, first, the main methodological and conceptual tools of the French « analyse du discours » (with a theoretical and practical approach to the analysis of historical, literary and political texts); and, second, some translation theories that enhance the linguistic and cultural Other.
