DEGANO CHIARA
(syllabus)
The course has a twofold strand, centering on the one hand on the translation of specialized discourse and on the other of literary texts. Common to both strands is a reflection on the linguistic and textual features of the source texts, which is meant as a preliminary step to translation, while allowing students to consolidate and expand their language competence. The specialized discourse strand will address the characteristics of Language for Special Purposes across domains, from a contrastive perspective, focusing on lexical and terminological aspects, as well as on structural aspects, at the syntactic and textual level. Such linguistic features will be set in relation with the register and the genre to which a text belongs. To this purpose, corpus linguistics will be introduced, both as a resource for computer-assisted translation and as a tool for register and genre analysis. Texts will be taken from a variety of discursive domains, including scientific discourse and popularization, institutional, and legal discourse. Theoretical-methodological reflection will be intertwined with translation practice, including the use and construction of specialized corpora. The literary translation strand will frame translation in contemporary theoretical and methodological perspectives, with special regard for the concepts of translation as a form of rewriting, and of cultural adaptation. The focus, however, will be on the practice of translation with a solid anchorage to linguistics. Particular attention will be given to the stylistic peculiarities of the source text, and especially to the interaction of the linguistic code with other aspects of narratives. Starting form the analysis of existing translations, and, relying on competences acquired in the first year, students’ awareness will be raised with regard to the recognition of linguistic varieties and register, and the strategies that can be used for their transposition in the target language and context. Different genres will be addressed, all falling in the domain of creative writing: narrative and its para-texts, theatre, audiovisual products.
