ENGLISH LANGUAGE AND TRANSLATION 3
(objectives)
First language The 3rd yr Language and Translation course (first language) comes under the core learning activities (Specialized languages, advanced linguistic competences and linguistic mediation from and to the languages of study) of the “Languages and cultures studies of the respective country” of the bachelor’s degree course in Languages and Cultural & Linguistic Mediation, specifically those activities aimed at providing effective operational competence at the levels established for the first language, as well as theoretical knowledge of specialized foreign language, of activities and strategies of linguistic and cultural mediation, in particular in multilingual contexts. The course aims at making students: - achieve B2+ level in productive written and oral skills- and C1 in written and oral comprehension - Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) 2018 (https://rm.coe.int/cefr-companion-volume-with-new-descriptors-2018/1680787989), through reception, production, interaction, written and spoken mediation activities as well as their related strategies. - consolidate their metalinguistic reflection also at comparative level: structural, textual, sociolinguistic and pragmatic aspects. - use resources and tools for language study and for translation (dictionaries, corpora and concordances). - implement their acquired knowledge to the analysis and translation of texts belonging to different genres. - know and understand theoretical and methodological issues related to translation as linguistic-cultural mediation. -analyze diverse oral and written text types also in order to plan short linguistic and cultural teaching paths within L2 didactics in educational and institutional contexts. Expected learning results: students will be able to use their first foreign language at B2+ level for written and oral production and at C1 level for written and oral comprehension; land they will be able to use the corresponding communicative strategies; they will be able to carry out metalinguistic reflection activities in a comparative perspective; they will learn and start using tools for language study; they will have basic notions on communication and intercultural mediation; they will apply acquired knowledge to the analysis of short texts in the language of study.

This course aims to introduce students to some of the key concepts of translation theory (equivalence, functionalist and descriptive approaches, translation and culture). After an initial focus on translation-based text analysis, students will be shown how to apply translation strategies, instruments and resources (grammar books, dictionaries and corpora) in translating simple texts from English into Italian. Translation tasks will be associated with a variety of text types and genres.

After an initial focus on translation-based text analysis, students will be shown how to apply translation strategies, instruments and resources (grammar books, dictionaries and corpora) in translating non-specialized texts from English into Italian. Translation tasks will be associated with a variety of text types and genres.
Language improvement classes: Activities aimed at developing reading, writing, listening and speaking skills at the required level.
