Fundamentals of data communications and networking: Analog and digital signals, modulators, transmission mediums, synchronous and synchronous communications, circuit and packet switching, connection-oriented and connectionless service, network topologies and traffic classification, TCP/IP architecture. Shannon capacity, Nyquist Sampling Theorem, attenuation, noise, influence of the transmission channel, interference.
Wireline transmission: Twisted pairs, coaxial cables, optical fibers.
Wireless transmission: Direct-wave propagation, satellite communication, terrestrial microwave systems, Starlink constellation.
Source coding and transmission techniques: Source coding, voice, analog and digital audio, analog and digital video, line coding schemes.
Transport networks: SDH/SONET, Digital Subscriber Line (DSL), Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM), Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS), Optical Transport Networks (OTN).
Access optical networks: Passive optical networks (PON): protocols GPON, Next Generation access networks NG-PON and NG-PON2.
Cellular communications and wireless standards: From macrocell to femtocell, power control, evolution of cellular systems, 4G and 5G paradigm, IEEE 802.11 protocol (Wi-Fi).
Network security: Security services and attack types, integrity, availability, authenticity, accountability, malware, risk management security plan, symmetric and asymmetric cryptography, digital signature and digital certificates.
