"Christian Latin" – "Monastic Latin": The Case of Isidore of Seville's Regula monachorum (c. 615-619)

First Semester

This monographic module primarily aims to outline the history of studies on Christian Latinity. This is a context within which, with both common and specific features, the process of constructing and consolidating a technical terminology specific to the monastic phenomenon takes place. This process will then be illustrated through the reading and analysis of Isidore of Seville's Regula monachorum, a text that has been little studied until now, yet is the work of one of the greatest authorities of medieval culture. The module will also include exercises aimed at orienting students towards the knowledge and critical use of the main digital resources for the study and research of Christian authors of late antiquity.
