- Elements on light propagation in anisotropic crystals : principal axes, index ellipsoid, ordinary and extraordinary waves, birefringence. - Electro-optic effect: introduction, polarization and amplitude modulation, phase modulation, longitudinal and transverse modulation. - Acousto-optic effect: introduction, Raman-Nath and Bragg regimes, acousto-optic modulation and deflection, acousto-optic isolators. - Integrated optics: planar waveguides and ray-propagation, eigenwaves and eigenvalues, TE and TM dispersion relations, channel waveguides, coupling. Coupled-mode theory. The coherent coupler. The integrated optical Mach-Zehnder interferometer and modulator. Co- and counter-propagating modes, Bragg reflection. - Introduction to quadratic nonlinear optics: phenomena, coupled equations, second-harmonic generationa, phase-matching. - Introduction to cubic Kerr-like nonlinear optics: phenomena, nonlinear refraction, self-effects.
