BALLATO PAOLO
(syllabus)
The course is divided into three main blocks:
1) Principles of geophysics for the structure and dynamics of the Earth. Earth's structure from seismological, gravimetric and magnetic data 2) Plate tectonics: Principles of plate tectonics, kinematics and velocity models. From kinematics to dynamics. 3) Regional tectonics. Subduction and collision processes. The Western Pacific. The Eastern Pacific the Andean system. The Tetidean system: from the Himalayan collision to the Mediterranean.
Practical exercises are focused on reading geological maps, creating geological sections and recognizing igneous and metamorphic rocks and the geodynamics processes that led to their development.
