The course offers an introduction to the study of language as social behavior. The topics covered will be: short history of the discipline, the study of variation, qualitative sociolinguistic research, field research methods, the study of social interaction. The principles and methods of conversation analysis. Particular attention will be given to field surveys and empirical studies carried out in different fields of application - for example school, language and cultural contact situations, communication in institutional settings.
